One of the worst unions our lads ever joined. Sorry. Unison were even worse for us. Went to Unite and similar and now shit is getting done.

The guy who made it is a former TV documentary maker. His channel is amazing.

Because this summary is pretty good still. Its enough that people might want to delve deeper into the guys other videos.

There was a powercut this week in a large part of Mexico (I know because of family from there). They're getting rarer now as Mexico has really tried to get its grid uptogether. The downside of countries like this having more stable grids is more people and business installing aircon systems, which just means more energy used, more emissions.

The funny thing is there are ways to passively cool areas. You can literally install shading over windows and walls that face the main sun. Last year in the UK we had a few days where it was over 35C. Nobody here has aircon. So that heat is a shock to us. But I managed to cover the outside of open windows with reflective bubble wrap insulation cut into sheets.

I also installed a small solar system on our shed to run a fridge freezer out there. The funny thing is the half inch stand-offs actively created significant shading and the inside of the shed really cooled down to where we could sit in there and chill out or do tasks without melting. When I realised this I started looking online for research on solar power and shading and found agrovoltaics. Solar panels over farm crops such as fruit in hotter regions mean less watering needed... its more spread out than usual solar farms as it has to let the sun in a bit more to the food but its something that needs to be done more.

I also read of people ignoring their energy policy for their home electric and installing grid-tie solar. They use sheds, stands in their garden, conservatory roofing etc, and usually just a few hundred watts of solar. Typically homes have a fuse rating of 30-50 amps. One 300w solar panel grid tied is not going to be anywhere near that, but will mean up to 300w of clean energy. Energy companies should just allow these systems, even provide them if its a problem or worry to them. You can buy this stuff off amazon for a few hundred quid.

I have a small unit too, but we're the rare ones. "Nobody" means "majority" here or do I really have to be literal wth everyone on the internet???

Fluoride is great in toothpaste. Kills the germs and sterilises the gums.

I fought our Council to stop fluoride being added to our water here in Southampton in the UK about 10 years ago. I asked questions about whether gastrointestinal doctors had been consulted and what the effects were on the rest of the body, the bones etc. Nobody could answer. At the time I found that worrying. I am pro-vaccination, pro-science. I pointed out the severe lack of dentists that even kids dont any longer have access to at the time (it has since become far worse). Without actual dentists people lose the influence they provide as well as the treatment.

Chlorine chemistry is added to water to treat the water. Fluorine is added to treat the person. And to me that sounded like medication with no opt out (other than moving home). People should have a right to chose what they dont want to put in their bodies, even if it is technically slightly harmful in the long term (even nutrients). Science is learning that over sterilisation of other parts of the body (eg the skin) can affect the health. What we need is far, far more data on those that do have these water additions to see what happens to the populations health.

I am already paying for water - through my water bill. I have a right to as clear a water as possible. And fluoride is technically a sterilising agent - fluorine and chlorine are right next to each other in the periodic table.

I was in Mexico many years ago, sleeping in Mexico City where people told me the next day one had gone off. Never awoke from my sleep. Completely slept through it. It left a big crack down the side of a huge commercial building a few miles away and they had to find an alternative work site.

He's done some other cool stuff on there (like building a box violin like they used in the trenches)

When them old boys get in real close to the mic it reveals a world of experience.

What's a common occurrence in your hobby that you think shouldn't be?

For me it's driving while under the influence. If you couldn't tell, I like me some ganja. However I have long since held the belief that it is utterly insane to drive while under the influence of most substances, with maybe nicotine and caffeine being the exception. All too often I see other stoners smoking and driving, which I...

The_Tired_Horizon ,
@The_Tired_Horizon@lemmy.world avatar

Mine is music. And the common occurrence is the myths. Just sooooo many myths, from tonewoods, to signal chains, to techniques.. if you're into recording in any way typically you have the tools actually in-hand to test these myths and 99% dont. They then get rather angry at those that have and adjusted their outlook.

I dont think UBI is needed. The super rich/elites would still find ways around it.
What is needed is for Politicians to stop being such cunts and start to protect their people from greedy arseholes, bring in higher rates of tax, bring in employment laws.. etc etc

Or they repeat the exact same soundbite in the comments.

The_Tired_Horizon ,
@The_Tired_Horizon@lemmy.world avatar

I'm kind of proud of our team of guys at work. We have had a couple of women work with us in the past but its rare. The dudes at work dont shout comments, dont wolf whistle, dont harass women. I dont understand why its so hard for others not to be complete morons. In fact one or two have called out the behaviour of others.

The_Tired_Horizon ,
@The_Tired_Horizon@lemmy.world avatar

I should point out we're hospital binmen. Like the binmen you see on the street but with slightly different kit (plus we also collect clinical waste). Only thing more stereotypically masculine a job is probably being a builder, plumber or electrician. Have seen a fair few women doing electrician roles and such in recent years.

I've been waiting 6 years for our Trust to fix our work equipment and the access areas we use ...they spend as low an amount as they can only for stuff to fail again

The_Tired_Horizon ,
@The_Tired_Horizon@lemmy.world avatar

I gave up reporting on major sites where I saw abuse. Stuff that if you said that in public, also witnessed by others, you've be investigated. Twitter was also bad for responding to reports with "this doesnt break our rules" when a) it clearly did and b) probably a few laws.

The_Tired_Horizon ,
@The_Tired_Horizon@lemmy.world avatar

On youtube I had a persistent one who only stopped threatening to track me down and kill me (for a road safety video) when I posted the address of a local police station and said "pop in, any time!"

The_Tired_Horizon ,
@The_Tired_Horizon@lemmy.world avatar

Laws against threats to kill, rape and assault tend to be pretty constant across the world.. 🤷‍♂️
