ezmack , in I'm tired, as an older Gen Z. I'm over it.

I don't know where you're at in your career but as an older millenial genx or boomers complaining about your work ethic is a joke dude. They ran these companies into the fucking ground lmao. When I was younger I kind of liked that office space 'nothing matters' affect but man, you do not want to work with/rely on those people at all.

Was kinda nice seeing the shift to writing think pieces about zoomers after all the shit they talked about millennial over the years but they'll move on. Just ignore it. But seriously watch these people at work they're useless. My parents paid for college with a summer job; I worked 40+ hour weeks in high-school. There's no comparison on work ethic here

southsamurai , in I like Nickelback
@southsamurai@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yeah, good band overall. I'd say they're a natural evolution of the kind of hard rock AC/DC founded. All the members are at least skilled on their instruments, the lyrics vary in quality, but never get bad. And when they're at their best, they did the kind of balls out rock that gets butts into seats, and then jumping out of them to enjoy the show.

That's kinda what rock n roll is about, imo. Yeah, rock can be deep, it can be emotional, it can be damn near anything. But it started as party music, and that's something that doesn't always get focused on the way nickelback does it. It's music to get hyped to and cut loose with.

Nothing wrong with that, ever.

Yeah, they get formulaic, but there are a shit ton of bands that have succeeded doing exactly that. Aerosmith comes to mind, so does AC/DC for the most part. Nothing wrong with a formula that works.

Lotta people in here ignoring OP's note about how sensitive and aggressively defensive the SO is. That will cause a relationship where one partner might get tired of trying and learn not to trigger them. They probably have serious inability to have hard discussions.

Simply saying to talk to their SO and don't worry about it, let it go, isn't real helpful. Having been in relationships with aggressively defensive people, it is a minefield to ever bring up any problem with them. There's almost no good sensitive way to do it with some people, and that gets tiring.

Today , in I'm pretty sure my older "sister" has locals calling me a mean nickname she created for fat women in the 90's

Unless you're in a very, very very small community, it seems unlikely that an adult would meet a child, somehow learn that the child was part of another adult's life, and then tell that child to insult that other adult. It's much more likely that the insult they're using is more common than you realize and something children just throw around. Probably has nothing to do with your sister. Do you want to share what the word is?

ParabolicMotion OP ,

This is the same older sister that has sicced guy on me that are ten years older than me, or more, in an attempt to make me date them. But in actuality, it was her trying to set me up for a cruel joke and bullying. It’s always men that are around her age and know her. One of them put feces on his chapstick, covered his lips in it, and then demanded to kiss me. This is the kind of stuff she does/arranges to bully me.

And yes, we live in a very small town. Her son plays baseball in a league with these families, so she sits around and talks to all their moms. The sisters of the sons attend the baseball games and practices, so they probably hear her.

Lowpast ,

What was the word

ParabolicMotion OP ,

It wouldn’t make sense here. It’s a name that my distant cousins invented in the 90’s. Later, my “sister” began using it as an insult.

Basically, some teenage boys created a name of a fictitious person in order to call women fat. They were actually using the name to describe a bloated body of a dead relative that had been discovered after it was too late to embalm it. They basically abused the corpse, and then tried to say it wasn’t one of their relatives they had abused. They gave the body a “nickname”, and then began using that nickname, as an insult towards women who were still alive.

If I told you the name, it wouldn’t make sense to you because you weren’t there in the ‘90’s to have to put up with them, or that situation.

Okay so what whas the word?

Lowpast ,

It doesn't need to make sense. What is it?

fiercekitten , in It's 2024, why do we still have buildings that use lights instead of sunlight during the day?

My guess would be costs. Skylights need to be framed and installed in a way that prevents leaks for as long as possible. They need to be well insulated, so that light is maximized and heat transfer is minimized. More windows also means higher maintenance and replacement costs.

I love the idea of skylights! I have never owned a home with any though. Probably just like with everything else in a house: people seem to like it until it leaks.

This person seems to have invaded your privacy, but the snippets of their comments make it seem like they were (at least originally) well intentioned and trying to find information about your husband and legal situation. They told you how easily they found information on you and exactly how they did it—this furthers my point that you can avoid this type of thing by modifying your own posting habits.

In my opinion, from the limited evidence in this screenshot, the other person needs a warning and you need a crash course in basic online safety.

Again, just to be clear, anybody who doxxes or stalks someone is in the wrong and should be held accountable. Likewise, we should all be accountable for our safety and privacy online also.

    ParabolicMotion OP ,

Actually, my name and photos of me are online for work related purposes and anyone can see those if they already know my name and profession. It isn’t against online safety for those items to be on public websites. It’s 2024, not the 90’s. I don’t think I need a crash course in online safety. I think people on Lemmy need to follow the rules. If you really want to advocate for online safety, why don’t you discuss how you signed up for Lemmy knowing your IP address would be visible to a bunch of strangers, with no required qualifications or background checks needed to operate and manage the Lemmy site. Do you need a crash course in internet safety? Should we argue everyone should just not have internet? Phones can be tracked really easily. Should everyone give up their phone?

That screenshot is also doxxing yourself and should be removed.

    ParabolicMotion OP ,

No, it really isn’t. My name is blocked out on it. I don’t need to ask myself for permission to screenshot my own inbox. That’s the beauty of being only one person. I don’t need to ask anyone for permission with regard to what I do with my own account.

    InEnduringGrowStrong ,
    @InEnduringGrowStrong@sh.itjust.works avatar

No, I'm telling you that screenshot contains enough information to identify your name.
The URL contains what I assume is your husband's name and what is likely the court case number..
Blocking your name here is insufficient and identifying you from there is a 1 second affair.

I personally don't care about identifying you, but this screenshot is enough for anyone to do so. (Again)

    ParabolicMotion OP ,

Ah, I see that now. Thank you. For those wondering where my comment went, here is the comment with everything blocked.

Grimy , in Someone killed a cat outside my door and I'm so sad

Wild cats are very rough on local ecosystems and I think it's generally recommended not to help them in any shape or form.

    Aphelion ,

This is such a bad take. Take them to a shelter so they at least have a chance at adoption. If that's not an option available in your area, find out if there's a TNR program that can fix the adults so they don't do more ecological damage by continuing to reproduce.

    Lemminary OP ,

Yep, I'm looking into both options! We can't have cats outside like this.

    Grimy ,

Sorry, I meant not to feed them but shelter or adoption is always the best. It does seem very cold how I put it.

    HenchmanNumber3 ,

They're feral, not wild. Wild cats (servals e.g.) live in wild areas of places like sub-Saharan Africa. You're referring to feral domesticated cats. They're out there because they've escaped or been released and continued to breed or were raised semi-feral like barn cats. We as a society are responsible for them.

    todd_bonzalez ,

Eh, if you're going to take on a stray cat, work on making them an indoor cat. If you're not ready for that challenge, don't try to take on a stray cat.

I agree though that the downstream effects of feeding strays makes it a harmful thing to do, even if it is directly helpful to the cat. But you can still help.

jas0n , in Biden is the Democratic nominee against Trump. Get over it.

I'm sick of hearing that Biden is the only person who has beat Trump as an equivalence to the only person who can. Out of 2 people who tried? Trump is a super weak candidate. Weaker than he was in 2016 and 2020. Anyone could beat him. But, here we are.

Does a low resolution desktop capture of someone slowly and sloppily typing messages for the viewer into notepad count as text-based?

How about a gigantic compressed image of mostly plain text attached to a post that requires an account to download files? Maybe also with a colored/patterned background to make trying to print the monstrosity even more fun.

Or maybe actual embedded text, but served via 300 MB of bloated libraries and fonts and a script that disables right-clicking and text selecting.
