Samsung M540 "Slyde" phone - The software was incredibly buggy including things like just randomly typing the wrong letter. Randomly bad tech is so much more irritating than tech you know is bad.

Google Nexus 7 (2012) - The tablet had defective chips that slowed down over time. Turned into a horrible slow piece of shit over time.

McDonald’s Gives Up On ‘AI’ After Comedy Of Errors, Including Putting Bacon On Ice Cream ( www.techdirt.com )

LLMs certainly hold potential, but as we’ve seen time and time again in tech over the last fifteen years, the hype and greed of unethical pitchmen has gotten way out ahead of the actual locomotive. A lot of people in “tech” are interested in money, not tech. And they’re increasingly making decisions based on how to drum...

Not quite, conductor diameter is important to supply proper current, which will change depending on the impedance of your speaker. There are other values like inductance and capacitance in a wire that could affect how your speaker sounds. The good news is that you can pretty much buy any cheap 16 ga copper speaker wire and not worry about it, as it would take effort to make a speaker wire that sounds bad (and those companies are the type to try to charge you $1000/ft for it!)

What is/are the finishing technique(s) used in die cast plastic production products?

I know it is not a post process thing. Is it stuff applied to the mold or stuff inside the plastic itself? I mean things like buttons, toys, phone parts before the back glass phase; things that are super thin with a finished surface that is durable and bonded to the part.

stealth_cookies ,

For die casting, it is post processing. After the part comes out of the mold there is the sprue, overflow tabs, and flash (extra material at the parting line) that needs to be cleaned up. Then the parts are often chromate conversion coated and then finished with either a wet paint or powder coat. Plating is also an option.

For injection molding, parts typically come out of the mold fully finished (or just requiring gate removal). The vast majority of parts are only textured where the final finish is part of the mold. You can do anything from a high polish to rough textures, or even any crazy pattern or simulated material you can imagine. For graphics you can apply in-mold decoration where a film is placed in the mold before the plastic is injected. There are some post processing finishes that are pretty frequently done such as wet painting and plating.

Im not a coating scientist (I'm a design engineer) so I can't really answer your questions in detail. But powder coats are typically polyurethane or polyester. There are different types of wet paints as well. Some surfaces also get an additional UV top coat for abrasion resistance.

For a phone button you might be looking at something like PVD coatings or platings. Chromating wouldn't be used in those cases as it is not terribly durable but it provides a good surface for the coating that goes on top or it. All of thses coatings are on the scale of a few mils thickness.

Most of these finishes are done on industrial scales and even the manufacturers send them out to external places for finishing (e.g. in Asia that type of facility is strictly controlled for environmental reasons) . At the end of the day I just speak with my supplier and tell them the finish I want and they take care of the rest.

One major downside of hybrid working really is that if you are having a meeting where even a single person is not there, then the entire meeting may as well be a video call. If you are on a video call, then why do you need to be in the office for it?

At my job we work with physical objects, so being in office is a requirement at least part of the time, but if I'm just going to be in meetings for most of the day, there is no way I'm going into the office just to sit on video calls all day.

The article more or less covers it. Asian countries without a credit card culture mostly transitioned to QR because it was easy with minimal equipment changes required. Those with widespread credit cards accept tap and QR (e.g. Taiwan widely accepts QR payments, Google pay, Apple pay, credit cards, and transit cards).

Since the western world has been on credit cards for decades that is the solution that is accepted there with QR payments being almost exclusively in businesses that have a customer base from Asian countries. Even then the US is odd compared to other countries since they never really adopted chip and pin.

Newbie printer suggestions.

Would be so kind as to suggest a printer for me? I have no experience at all with 3D printers or 3D modeling. But I am super interested and have electronics and coding knowledge. I would like to print things like brackets, enclosures for custom circuit boards, organizers, keyboard plates, etc. Ideally I would like to spend...

stealth_cookies ,

Not uncommon but lots of printers on the market (especially hobbyist ones) are kits that you need to assemble. Bambu printers are pretty much remove the printer from the box, remove some brackets, tape and protective packaging before installing the build plate and spool holder and turning it on.

I'd recommend going for the P1S if you can swing it over the P1P for the enclosure.

[Purchased Bambu A1 mini] Low End FDM for Miniatures, Hobby Parts, and Messing Around?

Edit 2: I purchased the Bambu A1 mini. If I regret it, there will be more chances in later years. Haha. Maybe by then I can work with resin and make the really fun minis. Thank everyone who responded for your advice and help....

stealth_cookies ,

I agree with the suggestion, Bambu A1mini is the only printer in that price range I would be willing to purchase and expect for it to work properly. While there are plenty of people happy with their Creality and Sovol printers, they often end up being project printers that require a lot of tinkering to keep them running well and those that aren't prepared for that shouldn't buy them.

I like to say there is two different hobbies here, if you want 3D Printing to be you hobby, then spend the money on a known reliable printer, if you want 3D Printers to be your hobby, then buy a cheap printer and get ready to tinker.

A couple other people have recommended resin printers, which are probably better for that you want to do. But be aware that resin is pretty nasty stuff and you need to have the printer in a very well ventilated area and should wear all the recommended safety equipment. You shouldn't get into resin printing unless you are aware of safety requirements which are often downplayed by people who own them.

Most image sensors are not square, they are 4:3 or 16:9. Square sensors are typically used for more specialty applications.

I agree it could be useful on a phone to have 1:1 sensors, but I would still support the direct recording to standard video resolutions and aspect ratios as otherwise encoder limitations will affect what video you can shoot.

When / why / how did "I hope you are well" become a standard email intro?

Practically every email I've received in maybe the past year has started with "I hope you are well". I even had an LLM draft a placeholder email for me and it started with the same thing. This has not always been the case and it's strange to me that everyone I interact with begins their emails with this line. Frankly, it's...

I mostly drink either a strong black tea blend (something that is neither too malty or astringent) with a bit of milk and sugar, masala chai, or a Chinese green tea like a Tie Guan Yin or a jasmine pearl.

I also love a good bubble tea, usually a simple pearl milk tea with less sugar.

How do we package food products sustainably in coming decades?

I imagine all plastics will be out of the question. I'm wondering about what ways food packaging might become regulated to upcycling in the domestic or even commercial space. Assuming energy remains a $ scarce $ commodity I don't imagine recycling glass will be super practical as a replacement. Do we move to more unpackaged...

stealth_cookies ,

Exactly, there is so much industrial waste before a product makes it to you. Yet everyone focuses on the consumer use which makes it inconvenient for the end user and ignores all the "invisible" waste which would require investment from businesses to fix but would have a far larger effect on the environment. Not being able to get a plastic straw or PE film bag doesn't really improve anything since the alternatives are worse and in many cases far worse for the environment.

stealth_cookies ,

Not really the manufacturing processes, but how individual parts are shipped and protected in transit. But yes, that is my complaint, put all the onus on the consumer without actually making any real improvements because the government isn't mandating it.

Why are Asian products so often wrapped in really *thick* plastics?

I live in Europe but sometimes shop at Asian supermarkets here. One of the things I notice with almost everything I buy there is that plastic packaging feels a lot thicker than that on European products. Is there a rational reason for this? Are plastics simply cheaper? Or do people worry more that products might spoil? Are these...

It can be a signal for caring and cleanliness. I know I've experienced restaurants in China where they deliver the dishes and cutlery you will be eating off of in shrinkwrap to signal they are clean, plus provide you a bowl to "rinse" the dishes in tea to make sure they are hygenic. Always thought that was really strange.

I have a boox page. Agreed that it is a great option if you want something that is more flexible since it is essentially an Android tablet including the ability to install apps from the play store. Not as user friendly as a kindle type device though.

stealth_cookies ,

I meant in general user experience isn't quite as intuitive. Things like the settings are just more complicated and not clear (at least comparing to my original kindle paperwhite). The refresh speeds and backlight in particular are both somewhat important settings that could be implemented better.

The nice part is that they could essentially eliminate the need for their phone since they can download directly from wherever they get their ebook files on the device.

That means that over and above whatever debts they have, they think the market values the data their users have given them is worth that much. That said, if Google is only paying then $60M/year for access to that data, they are going to need a lot of customers like that to reach $6.4B valuation.

What should I add to my '90s website?

So I'm currently toying around with NeoCities, and decided to trial it by building your classic mid '90s Geocities/Tripod/Angelfire pastiche website.

Some of the most important elements are already in place.

Tile background? Large font? Heading in bright pink with a shadow? Unusual colour choices? Random cat gifs? Under construction gif? Check! Check! Check!

In the true spirit of the '90s DIY web, some more pages (including the links page) are coming soon.

(I'm thinking of adding a page dedicated to either Britney or a nu-metal band.)

You can see the page so far here: https://that90ssite.neocities.org/

There are a few things that I want to add to make it complete, and I'm looking for suggestions.

The first, is to embed a midi file that plays automatically. Any suggestions on the best way of doing this?

Second, it's just not going to be complete without a guestbook.

Third, any webring suggestions?

Fourth, what's the best way of adding a java chat room in 2024?

Finally, anything else that really needs to be a part of a great '90s website?

UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! I've added more annoying GIFs, a guestbook, a links page, and a cyber cat hangout.

UPDATE 2: And added even more gifs, an amazing Amiga demo, and a ton of links.

I put loose leaf tea (usually a blended black tea such as English breakfast) in a basket in my mug and then pour boiling water from my kettle over it and let it sit for about 3-4 minutes. Remove the tea and add a bit of sugar and milk, stir and enjoy. I've got one of those "smart" mugs so my tea stays hot for the entire time I'm drinking it.

Reddit Is Letting Power Users In on Its IPO. Not Everyone’s Buying ( www.wired.com )

Reddit Is Letting Power Users In on Its IPO. Not Everyone’s Buying::Reddit says it wants to reward users by letting them buy into the company’s public listing. Some say it’s too risky—others say they won’t pay a company they’ve already given hours of free labor to.

I actually got an email from Reddit about the offering today. They specifically, in bold, say they don't have access to this information as it is only provided to the plan administrator.

I definitely notice that depending on how I'm dressed women will or won't look at me or choose to stand next to me out in public. I've got a jacket that I'm not sure what it signals, but it causes women to much more frequently stand beside me when waiting for the train.

Loading boarding passes in Google Wallet is nice, I don't belive you need internet once it is loaded. The airline apps can be great or mediocre. A positive example was from I flew United in the summer and had a tight layover at a large airport I had never been to. As soon as I landed it popped up and provided the instructions for how to get to my gate. No issues with spam from the apps, I always just delete them when I'm done with the trip as I don't fly that often.

316L absolutely can corrode. Add a bit of acid in the water and it will start showing rust soon enough. Typically you can find chemical compatibility charts for various metal grades to see what does and doesn't work with a metal.

Is anyone else worried about the apple vision pro?

i wouldn't normally be concerned since any company releasing a VR product with this price tag is obviously going to fail... but it's apple and somehow through exquisite branding and sleek design they have managed to create something that resonated with "tech reviewers" and rich folk who can afford it....

stealth_cookies ,

Pretty simply, the perception that Apple has around design makes anything they develop fashionable by default.

I've found Aliexpress shipping is much better than it used to be. It used to be 1 month for ocean shipping and another for customs and delivery. Now it is a couple weeks total. Just bought a bunch of stuff mid January and it all arrived last week.

Agreed, I regret buying my Galaxy Watch 4. The sleep and exercise tracking is nice to have but otherwise it is just an inconvenient watch because you have to remember to charge it daily.

stealth_cookies ,

I do wear my normal watch when I sleep, same as I want to do with my smart watch to track sleep. The normal watch comes off for showering on the morning and put back on right after while the smart watch takes longer to charge than that so I have to remember to go back and put the watch on once it finishes charging (if it has charged fully by the time I have to leave the house).

It is so frustrating trying to buy a nvme ssd because they make it so unclear which models have DDR and which don't. I tried to buy one recently to upgrade a family member's computer and was wondering how a non technical person has any chance of finding something decent.

stealth_cookies ,

You are still likely going to want some sort of streaming device though. I have an old computer of mine running unraid with Plex in a docker container and still use a chromecast in apps only mode to stream to my TV.

stealth_cookies ,

Ideally they also support a hardware key. Not nearly enough websites out there support FIDO/Webauthn.

For me there are two things that makes me reject all self checkout. Most importantly, it is taking people's jobs and making me do the labour for no discount, companies only offer them because it pads their profits. Second, the user experience is almost universally terrible. I don't want to take the risk just to get pissed off.

stealth_cookies ,

At one point the software stopped working on my computer at work. I couldn't believe how many times I used it throughout the day without realizing it. My only issue is that it can't search network shares properly.
