It was bad enough to have to get through the world of children and especially teenagers once. I have zero desire to ever watch and accompany someone else having to go through that hell.

stopthatgirl7 and reddfugee are two I remember seeing a few times.

What does the world think of India?

I am an Indian and I have noticed that Indians are way too proud of their country for some reason and at the same time lack any civic sense towards it, they are extremely loud and extremely proud. We feel like the world revolves around India and our culture is superior to that of others. Also, a considerable chunk of the...

Train toilets dumping directly on the tracks isn't excessively unusual, we still have trains here in Austria that do that although it is definitely being phased out.

schnurrito ,

I have never been to India and have no intention to travel there. My imagination is that it is overcrowded, the people there are mostly polite, hard working but not especially skilled. It is definitely a relatively poor country with a lot of inequality and crime.

Lots of countries vote on Sundays which solves that problem

schnurrito ,

I have never heard of that being an issue in my country where it is a constitutional requirement for elections to be held on Sundays or public holidays.

schnurrito ,

As a European I have always been confused when Americans talk about "voter registration". The way it works in my country is you are legally required to register your residence with the government and that registration is automatically used to determine a voter registry (just filtering by age, citizenship and exclusion due to criminal convictions all of which is information already known to the government). I always just get a letter a few weeks before elections informing me where my polling place is.

schnurrito ,

Can exclude, not all of them do, I think it has to be a specific part of the sentence (ie not automatic) because some high court ruled that some years ago.

schnurrito ,

I meant not all criminal offenses necessarily cause an exclusion from voting rights. If I recall correctly there is a list of specific ones for which people can be sentenced to loss of voting rights.

schnurrito OP ,

Thanks, added to OP. First time posting to this sub and didn't notice that others were posting the alt text to their OPs.

there are many people in German-speaking countries with the last name "Deutsch" too

schnurrito ,

He got that prize mainly for not being George W. Bush if I remember 2009 correctly.

Technically these kinds of things are decided by the Wikimedia Foundation but they'll usually not do things that the editing community of the local wiki doesn't want.

In 2014 the WMF forced a new software feature (Media Viewer) on all wikis and enforced this by "superprotecting" the JavaScript on the German-language Wikipedia so local admins (who at one point even blocked the Deputy Director of the WMF from editing) couldn't disable the new media viewer. The WMF doesn't really want these kinds of constitutional crises to happen again.

Hot air balloons are a very useful mode of transportation if your goal is to take aerial photographs from them (although admittedly nowadays you could also use drones). It's always a question of what you want to achieve.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Aerial_photographs_from_hot_air_balloons

schnurrito ,

It is Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia. That is where most of the images used on Wikipedia and other WMF projects are stored. It has categories for nearly everything under the sun.

schnurrito ,

Beside everything else it is certainly nonfree proprietary software. I prefer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comic_Neue

What is the Legal copyright on a Lemmy Post?

Most instances don't have a specific copyright in their ToS, which is basically how copyright is handled on corporate social media (Meta/X/Reddit owns license rights to whatever you post on their platform when you click "Agree"). I've noticed some people including Copyright notices in posts (mostly to prevent AI use). Is this...

schnurrito ,

In the vast majority of countries, everything written down is automatically copyrighted by default and if you want to release it into the public domain or under a free license you have to make it explicit.

schnurrito ,

To my understanding this means historically a western communist who supported the USSR's interventions (with tanks, hence the name) in Eastern European countries (Hungary, Czechoslovakia, maybe also East Germany) when the Warsaw Pact was a thing. More broadly someone who thinks the Soviet Union was a good regime.

schnurrito ,

Everything about lemmy is. It is literally a reddit clone.

We used to think that if we had user-generated content, we would all be immune to governments, corporations and other powerful actors spreading propaganda because we would get our information from each other, not them.

Turns out: governments, corporations, other powerful actors are perfectly capable of paying "users" to "generate content" and not even disclose this.

The Internet used to be an exciting development, now it's just like, yeah it exists, so what.

schnurrito ,

I am too young for that, but I do remember discovering the concept of wikis and finding it amazing that websites could now be written by their audience.

A fairly dead concept by now, nowadays the entire rest of the Internet is more interesting than wikis.

Or it's great because something interesting is about to happen. If I had a time machine I would travel to 1989 to see the fall of the Berlin Wall.

I didn't get more conservative as I grew older. At least I don't think I did. What happened is that the definition of conservative changed.

Criticizing censorship and restrictions on free speech didn't use to be a conservative cause, it is now, so I grew "more conservative" without any of my beliefs changing.

What are some free interests/things/hobbies you can do in the city?

I live alone and I'm just wasting away my time here. It's actually making me very depressed to be honest. I do live in the city which makes think there ought to be at least something to do out here. Though I can't really afford to spent money on it every day....

Photography is free if you have a smartphone.

I frequently think this too, but then remember that progress towards less authoritarianism does occasionally actually happen. For example the USA PATRIOT Act used to be everyone's example of authoritarianism in the US, but that has by now expired. For another example, the Snowden revelations actually led to everyone's devices and communications getting encrypted. When is the last time you heard about random small people being sued for copyright infringement by the RIAA or MPAA or something?

For less recent examples, consider the 1989-1991 fall of communism in Eastern Europe, making those countries a lot less authoritarian.

When the world gets better, we tend not to notice as much as when it gets worse.

Should I join "free speech" alternatives?

Hello! I've been searching for a reddit alternative, and yes, I've picked Lemmy and Raddle, but here's the thing. My morbid curiosity is perked up, and a part of me wants to join the "free speech" alternatives, like Saidit, Poal, etc. What's wrong with me that I want to join toxic places? I mean, yes I'll find a whole new...

schnurrito ,

I am not familiar with the ones you mention. I do however suggest you read this: https://slatestarcodex.com/2017/05/01/neutral-vs-conservative-the-eternal-struggle/

Especially the part you find if you search for "Voat" on that page.

Looking through the ones I have installed, I think these are useful to most people:

  • AnySoftKeyboard
  • Calculator++
  • K-9 Mail
  • Open Camera
  • Orbot
  • OsmAnd~
  • VLC
schnurrito ,

you see, the problem is: if you can do that, any spambot or troll farm can do it too...

Some years ago I was actually able to post to reddit through Tor. Has that really changed?

schnurrito ,

That is why the explanation continues: "(other than pedantic exceptions due to calendar issues or timezone alterations, or someone dying before their birthday, or being born on a leap day, none of which apply in this case)".

schnurrito ,

I just checked the Wikipedia articles and it seems that two of them have already had their birthday this year, five not.

It is supposed to believe that climate change is a … scam?!

You can believe that climate change is not real, but a "scam", how does that even work?

schnurrito ,

My original plans were to travel to Niagara Falls. That seemed like the coolest place there would be totality at.

I am so glad I (due to circumstances I neither thought nor hoped would happen) am typing this message from Mexico City Airport instead while waiting for boarding to start for my flight back to Europe. It was perfectly sunny where I watched it.

schnurrito ,

Especially if that "escapism" is sleeping

2004: The Internet is going to lead us into a utopian future of free communication where we exchange ideas with each other without corporate media being gatekeepers telling us what to read, write and think!

2024: Hi, I'm Meta and everyone gets their information from my platforms and I can decide what ideas to allow there. What do you mean we weren't supposed to have that anymore by now, whoever told you that kind of nonsense.

schnurrito ,

I am too young to remember that. Of course browsers are now free (at least as in beer, many also as in speech) again and that is a good thing. In my childhood, computers were pretty much synonymous with Windows and the web was mostly unusable without Flash Player and it's a good thing that that has changed. Still, we don't live in the utopian society I imagined the Internet would lead to.

schnurrito ,

Yeah this was my first thought too. What conspiracy theories about the eclipse?

Are you seriously denying that Käsekrainer and Bernerwürstel are a lot better?

I have no idea how government regulation of the Internet has become so normalized.

From your article:

Despite this, KOSA enjoys bipartisan support, including a July endorsement from President Joe Biden.

The worst laws in the US are usually supported by both parties.

I used to not really like JKR for reasons like these: https://stallman.org/harry-potter.html

I am not completely sure where I stand on her substantive opinions in relation to trans issues. I think it's a debate where both sides make some good points.

But she is definitely right about the decline of free speech.
