Those poor billionaires. What are they going to do now that the average Joe can buy JO crystals?

parpol ,

Schools should avoid windows and Microsoft products altogether.

My middleschool used OpenSuse, which was great not only in terms of having free and open source alternatives be the norm, but also that kids were too linux illiterate to install games (and viruses) on school PCs.

How China Pulled So Far Ahead on Industrial Policy ( www.nytimes.com )

But no country has come close to matching the scale and tenacity of China’s support. The proof is in the production: In 2022, Beijing accounted for 85 percent of all clean-energy manufacturing investment in the world, according to the International Energy Agency....

parpol ,

That's weird. For so much money going into green energy, you'd think you'd be able to at least see the skyline in china. Oh right, by "clean energy manufacturing" they mean electric cars and other e-waste products, not clean energy production.

Using Lemmy make me hate Windows (or any proprietary softwares) and finally make me fully switched to Linux

Just like migrating from Reddit to Lemmy it's the same as migrating from Windows to Linux, there's shortcomings and learning curve and the more I use Lemmy the more I hate about Windows, because unlike reddit Lemmy is open source and open source softwares communities is more popular than proprietary communities and people like...

I switched to Linux mint back in 2015 but had to switch back because of poor drawing tablet support and because I used Adobe Flash. I tried again last week and the open tablet driver fully supports my tablet, proton runs all my games, and fuck Adobe.

parpol ,

I just gave inkscape and gimp another chance. The UI has become more modern now so it isn't as much of a pain to use.

parpol ,

I haven't used Nobara so I can't say for sure, but I feel Debian distros have overall more compatibility with drivers than redhat ones, and mint and Ubuntu is way older and has a bigger community, so Id probably just go with Ubuntu instead of Nobara despite Nobara being the "gaming Linux". Installing nvidia drivers, wine, and proton is after all just esentially downloading the deb files, run, and you're done.

The average of all estimates are a little above 2.0°C with a ± of 1.5°C or so. And not all these estimates are equally reliable. We can't just take the average of all predictions thinking that's the most likely outcome.

Guy who said "If I die, it is not suicide" dies of suicide right before important court date, and perfectly healthy and active person suddenly succumbs to rare antibiotics-resistant infection.

They just happened to work at the same company and die right before they could testify on the same thing.

This not being foul play is less likely than a global conspiracy.

parpol ,

Obvious answer is to move to an instance that does moderation properly.

parpol ,

I see now that OP was being maliciously compliant.

parpol ,

Their website isn't properly caching pages which is the real reason they're having problems.

parpol ,

most online reviews, AI or not, are fake, so it doesn't matter to begin with.

parpol ,

Can't get progressively worse dementia if you're dead.

parpol ,

I was going to say this. OP has never had to suffer through every mouse click registering either twice or none at all. Only on Logitech.

parpol ,

Did you plug it into the audio-in jack (blue) by mistake ?

YSK : Dark patterns among large companies are becoming more mainstream ( youtu.be )

While it is no secret that exploitative practices are interlaced with capitalistic tendencies, the practices are becoming intolerable. Signing up to pay usually takes only two clicks that are prominently visible whereas cancelation options are hidden away in deep settings requiring multiple clicks. Pricing often feel arbitrary...

Comments no longer visible with youtube frontends?

Are comments no longer visible for anyone else using the youtube frontends? I can no longer see comments with either invidious, piped, or viewtube, and I've tried several instances of each. With invidious there's just nothing there below the video description. With viewtube I get an error message. And with piped I see...

parpol ,

What an incredibly good opportunity to switch to polycentric comments.

parpol ,

Legally there are no issues as long as the download option directly downloads from the original host where your application then cuts out the ads. Blocking ads is not illegal. It is neither copyright infringement nor piracy. It might break the ToS but that is ultimately not illegal, and may also be circumventable if carefully implemented.

Invidious does not break the youtube ToS because it doesn't use the youtube API that the ToS is applied to. Same with Grayjay.

parpol ,

I stopped using revanced in favor of Grayjay. It is an excellent app. It was initially a bit buggy, but not anymore. But don't get the playstore version. Download it directly to get all plugins.

parpol ,

I thought it was because of the ban on a specific high sulfur fuel from cruisers that was causing short term global cooling.

parpol ,

It would help the prosecution's case if there first was scientific evidence of there being such a thing as gaming addiction, and not just boomers arguing it because they think kids these days should go outside more.

People need to abandon shell.
Bicycling is great.

Castlevania II - Simon's Quest

I know all the secrets by heart from playing it as a kid, and while clunky, it is a fun challenge to beat within the time limit to unlock the best ending.

parpol ,

Learning how to build a bomb shouldn't be blocked by llms to begin with. You can just as easily learn how to do it by googling the same question, and real and accurate information, even potentially dangerous information, shouldn't be censored.

parpol ,

Ironically the most defederated instances are hexbear, lemmygrad and other tankie/lil'pink instances, and to them anyone who disagrees with them is a Nazi.

parpol , (edited )

Sweet baby inc is being cancelled because they launched a harassment campaign against a steam group and tried to get the group owner banned on steam, not because they insert wokeness in videogames. The CEO of the company has also bragged on twitter about how they do exactly what this article says they don't.

Also, this article is written by a bigot who says you can't be racist against white people, and when facing backlash, she privated her account but left "you can't be racist against white people" as profile banner.

parpol ,

You're not fascist for not wanting to buy games from a company that is linked to nothing but underperforming garbage titles, or maybe you thought forspoken and suicide squad were good games?

All the steam group does is take the titles Sweet Baby Inc lists on their own website, and list them in the group so people know what titles they've worked on. The CEO has tried her best to portray the group as a racist misogynistic cess pool, and all it did was Streisand effect the shit out of the situation and increase the group members from 4k to over 100k.

  • 300g mixed mince

Good. With China being the biggest source of co2 emissions in the world, at 28% of global emissions as of 2020, this means that the faster they get their shit together, the longer we have before the doomsday clock ticks midnight.

parpol ,

Op is either a Chinese bot account or paid propagandist. We all hate late stage capitalism, but OP is trying to redirect that hate into censoring criticism of the Chinese Communist Party.

parpol ,

I had a similar conversation with someone on hexbear and they not only banned me, they blocked my entire instance.

parpol ,

Guess who benefit the most from people watering down the terms Nazi and fascist.

You saw someone calling out a literal CCP shill, and immediately thought "he is fascist".

"Trans-positive" I'm sure trans-people live very happy lives in Russia and China. No forced conversion therapy or threats of violence anywhere .

parpol ,

Watering down terms is a real thing, and you're doing it. Now either own up to the fact that by doing so, you are helping nazis become accepted to society, or go cry to your mods and hide your ass behind a block, and pretend nothing happened.

I am neither associated with nor tolerate any form of fascism whatsoever, and you're trying your damn hardest to associate me with it because you are incapable of imagining that maybe you can be anti-fascist and anti-authoritarian at the same time.

"Apologize now or block & report" is the biggest manchild comment I've ever heard on Lemmy, lmao.

Chinese firm behind ‘news’ websites pushes pro-Beijing content globally, researchers find ( www.reuters.com )

More than 100 websites disguised as local news outlets in Europe, Asia and Latin America are pushing pro-China content in a widespread influence campaign linked to a Beijing public relations firm, digital watchdog Citizen Lab has found.

parpol ,

News like that commercial nuclear battery that lasts for 50 years is one of the examples of blatant Chinese propaganda and almost everyone fell for it. In reality that Chinese company hasn't even released a white paper on the battery, so it is basically all claims with 0 proof.

parpol ,

It's a problem when anyone does it.

parpol ,

Don't forget to make a YouTube video about how slow clean code is, as if you can't optimize power intensive parts only and leave the rest clean.

parpol ,

There is also the privacy redirect extension, which also supports redirecting to invidious, nitter, bibliogram, openstreetview, etc, all toggleable. It lets you pick instance, or randomly pick for you.

parpol ,

I see. I don't use X so I never noticed. I believe you can pick other services instead of nitter, or disable X redirects altogether.

Initial Impressions of GrapheneOS

About a week ago, I finally made the decision to flash GrapheneOS on my Pixel 6. I've been thinking about moving to GrapheneOS for months but was afraid to do so because of missing functionalities or app incompatibility that would result in my Pixel 6 becoming unusable. Even though I could just re-flash stock Android should I...

parpol ,

Only reason I haven't made the switch is Google Pixel phones are too expensive.

parpol ,

I usually only spend $200 for a smartphone and keep it for 5+ years. I would prefer one in that range. $400 is a bit too expensive for me.

In other news: whistleblower reveals murderers kill people.
