Except that Tesla is approving a bonus for Musk greater than the cost of his purchase of Twitter...

pacmondo ,

Oh yeah, there was a whole era where the earth was extra oxygenated so you had XXL insects flying around. They have even done experiments raising modern insects in oxygen rich tanks and they grow (proportionally) quite large!

pacmondo ,

This looks like concept art for Bojack Horseman

pacmondo ,

And yet too ashamed to show their faces

pacmondo ,

That's like half of the "allure" of the Federalist Society: access to powerful people and financiers

pacmondo ,

You could find a cool scooter! Or some coins!

pacmondo ,

Most of Canada's small coins respond to magnets. Not sure about other countries.

Edit: Or even better, old ferromagnetic coins or forgotten tools from past ages if you're in areas of the old world

pacmondo ,

I like the one without the creepy little wing-hand haha

pacmondo ,

Yes, I've always thought of bacteriophages as giant death robots of the virus world

pacmondo ,

Any particular reason for that aspect ratio?

pacmondo ,

Oh, that's cool! Like a reverse ultrawide

pacmondo ,

Sounds like its time to invest in some energy storage. Batteries are one thing but at that kind of scale it's probably better to go with momentum storage or something

pacmondo ,

More like have captured. The supreme court and the appellate, at least

pacmondo ,

Yeah, that should've been a "too" not an "at least"

pacmondo ,

That sounds like a quick way to make super tumors

pacmondo ,

I was hoping someone would have the fuck the state version in the comments, thanks op

pacmondo ,

You get hollandaise's name out your goddamn mouth. I would drink that sauce. Would it basically be drinking butter? Yes. Would I still do it? Absolutely

pacmondo ,

This video by CGP Grey goes into it a bit more, but split brain patients have even had their two halves disagree. For example the conscious hand picking out something to wear then the other hand batting it away and picking something else. It's quite fascinating to read about.

I thought they were referring to the fact that under the ice its an archipelago, so if the ice melts it will have southern coasts again

pacmondo ,

Looks like connections are onion-routed and it has its own built-in discovery

pacmondo ,

I don't know why, only what lol

pacmondo ,

In Quebec French, instead of saying "Break a leg" you say "merde" which literally translates to "shit"

pacmondo ,

I'd love to, can someone convince my landlord?

pacmondo ,

That or keep submitting different but equally racially gerrymandered maps until you run out of time and "Whoops, guess we gotta use one of the pile of racist ones"

Anyone else have to watch recorded lectures at 2-3x speed?

Currently studying for an exam tomorrow, and I now realize why I'm always so sleepy in class: the prof. speaks sooo sloowllyy with pauses - in-between - most words. I can't keep focused because of that; thankfully, he has narrated powerpoints that I can download and watch... at 3x normal speed. Which is nice because a 37 minute...

pacmondo ,

It really depends on the professors cadence for me. Some professors move from topic to topic at a good pace and I don't feel the need. Some really talk slow and linger on each point and those I need to go 1.5 or 2x speed

pacmondo ,

Uh oh, I sense a slide towards autocracy

I think they're referring to a common growth projection strategy used in modern capitalism which is basically whatever number we made last year + X% is our goals for this year and if we don't make that growth then it's considered a failure and now we have to lay people off.

No capitalist is ever okay with doing just as well as last year, or recognizing that last year was an extraordinary circumstance that gave us blockbuster sales and it isn't necessarily repeatable.

It may not be the textbook definition, but it's definitely a trait of modern capitalists.

The closed, finite system we are referring to is of course Earth. Capitalism requires expansion, but what do you do when you cannot expand further?

pacmondo ,

If it isn't capitalism then I would argue it's a direct consequence of the incentives it sets up. When a venture is primarily owned by investors whose only interest in it is a return on investment, sooner rather than later, it sort of sets up exactly what I described does it not?

Maybe the words I should have used were "unfettered capitalism"?

There's a really underrated band from Vancouver called Slightest Clue that just put out an album. Alternative/punk and very fun

Man, some scientist says the first thing that pops into his head and you're forever known as the bird shit beetle

Appreciation post for db0 admins in light of .world blocking /c/ piracy and similar /c/'s .

I understand why they did what they did and it makes me think of how db0 and other admins are saying fuck all and taking a very big liability for making and supporting a free internet and i want to say all the work you do is very much appreciated. Also shoutout to lemmy.ml admins for running a similar community on their own ....

pacmondo ,

One of the largest instances, lemmy.world, is no longer receiving posts from this community. They're worried about legal troubles I think?

pacmondo ,

Blocked, unblocked, then blocked again recently.

pacmondo ,

I pay for it, the results are quality and the fact that my brain doesnt have to sift through ad results and can just look at the real data is so nice. Additionally, they have a large number of "lenses" which can change the scope of your search. For example, they have a lens for searching lemmy as well as lenses for the "small web", which filters out all the results from massive corporate websites and gives way more personal project sites and the like.

All in all I'm a fan.

pacmondo ,

Whoops, blew the galactic breaker. Somebody has to go down to the supermassive black hole and flip it back on.

Is anyone else worried about the apple vision pro?

i wouldn't normally be concerned since any company releasing a VR product with this price tag is obviously going to fail... but it's apple and somehow through exquisite branding and sleek design they have managed to create something that resonated with "tech reviewers" and rich folk who can afford it....

pacmondo ,

Not to take away from your experience because I'm sure it was genuinely wonderful, but all I can picture for that support group is a bunch of absurd VRchat avatars sitting in a circle for a therapy session.

pacmondo ,

Unfortunately the new law seems to only cover "anal, oral, and vaginal sexual contact". So unfortunately that totally excludes any kind of forced envelopment.

pacmondo ,

As soon as I opened it I was like "Wasn't it a dude last time?"

pacmondo ,

The criticism is all in your head, friend. I was merely expressing a feeling of deja-vu.

GOP Governors Invoke the Confederate Theory of Secession to Justify Border Violations ( slate.com )

This week, Republican governors across the country escalated their conflict with the Biden administration over the southern border by invoking the same legal theory that slave states wielded to justify secession before the Civil War....

pacmondo ,

Nah, my steam deck comes with me to the front

pacmondo ,

I remember having popup blockers, but not a whole cloth ad blocker.
