I discovered when I graduated from Computer Science I prefer people to programming. I toot about Privacy and about how RFC1984 relates to that. I'm concerned by the threat of mass data collection and surveillance. I like to raise awareness of this RFC: https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1984

We need to do this in the US.

“Tens of thousands of demonstrators crowded onto French streets on Saturday to denounce the rise of the country’s far-right political party and call on fellow citizens to block it from taking power in snap parliamentary elections set by President Emmanuel Macron.”

@econads @GottaLaff this is why I say every election counts.

In the UK getting 5 percent of the vote matters because a candidate party gets their deposit back. I don't know if it's the same in the EU.

But the more of us who can vote should vote. It's why I love the fact the French left are trying an alliance. I don't know how long it will last, but there's an attempt at providing an alternative and to signal to the centrists, perhaps they want to shift to the left a bit.

I'm scared too.

In this world of pandemics, questionable governments and questionable choices in computing when we need to embrace degrowth, I find comfort at the moment in helping other folk when I can.

A bit like the metaphor of a butterfly causing a small flap that turns into a hurricane.

You never know quite how far small deeds can go. Help others when you can, it can be just a message of support. Or helping folks on to here.

It's all I can do. Rebel with small acts of kindness.

Would a native English speaker help me out here?

I know what a coffin is, and I know what a casket is. But what should I call these simple plywood boxes, Russia uses to send dead soldiers back to Russia?

onepict ,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@randahl crates

@randahl I'm reminded somewhat about the Vietnam war.

Human life appears to be cheap. Russian's children and also Ukraine's children.

"come on fathers don't hesitate
send your sons off before it's too late
and you can be the first ones on your block
to have your boy come home in a box"

Like I said crates.

Its utterly appalling the waste of live to old mens vanity and love of nostalgia.

Putins end of live crisis.

The “great” thing about England is that when these articles come out and you google the person who wrote them it’s not something boring like “their dad is a trust fund manager” it’s “their dad is a baron, their grandfather edited the newspaper this appears in, and their family founded the private Bank of England

*all true of this writer

@alex wait that's a real name?

Just sometimes with names like that, I do wonder if we're in a simulation. Like that name seems so made up.

Then I remember that England really still is Medieval Fun time land.

@cstross @alex I think people tend to forget that when we mean the establishment, some of that establishment came over with the Normans.

The best way to preserve the fediverse is to provide support to it.

Pay your instance admin if you can, if you can't boost their fundraiser posts

Pay the developers who develop the software you use on there if you can. If you can't, boost their posts and help them fundraise.

Also pay the projects non Dev folks. Because they help Devs to focus on the code while they do community development, moderation etc.

It's an ecosystem and we can't rely on the whims of VCs.

On any online space, you should consider who you give power to. Who has the control over who you choose to associate with? Power doesn't corrupt. It reveals.

People in real life do choose to avoid dangerous or toxic places.

All that the instances who sign the fedipact are doing is signalling to some of us that somewhere is safe for folk who don't want to engage with Facebook at all.

This is a Freedom of Association issue, not a Freedom of Speech issue.

@quoidian @thenexusofprivacy you can check the blocklists on the backend. I know @FediTips has a good guide as well

If you're a Fediverse admin, this is a plea for you to defederate threads.net

is part of Meta/Facebook, and their track record on moderation is as horrific as it is possible to be:

The victims of prejudice, violence and genocide cannot "block" attackers that were radicalised online. Victims of bigotry and hatred cannot opt out of being beaten up or murdered.

Please defederate Threads/Meta/Facebook 🙏

@FediTips The thing I often think about with Zuckerberg and Musk et all are Robert Caro's thoughts about Power.

"What I believe is always true about power is that power always reveals. When you have enough power to do what you always wanted to do, then you see what the guy always wanted to do."

Mark Zuckerberg revealed that to us over a decade ago. He revealed what he can do with his power again and again. He showed us that from the beginning when at university.

Is there anyway to boost a post while adding your own comments?

onepict ,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@geekybodhi @dentangle That's a feature of Mastodon, quote toots in that way are deliberately not a feature.

Although some other fediverse software does have this functionality. Although off the top of my head I can't remember which ones.

Although @FediTips will know.
