Ozymandias, because it's one of the very few I've read, and I liked it.

kakes ,

My family has a history of the bad kind of alcoholism, so I didn't even try alcohol until my mid-twenties.
I was very introverted at the time, and I have to admit, I loved the person I was when I was drunk.

Fortunately for me, I had the willpower and the awareness to realize that just because I liked it didn't mean I needed more. For about 10 years, I drank socially, in moderation, maybe about once a month on average.

I'll admit it did get a bit dicey in University, where I had a drink most days with my friends after class, but I very quickly dropped that habit after graduating.

Not that it's relevant (is any of this story?), but I recently discovered I have an issue with my liver - presumably not alcohol related - and as a precaution I've just stopped drinking entirely. Fortunately I'm a lot more "extroverted" these days, but I'll admit I do miss it sometimes.

kakes ,

Honestly, since weed was legalized here, my entire social group pretty much entirely ditched alcohol in favor of cannabis. Definitely makes it easier for me to not feel pressured to drink, thankfully.

kakes ,

The first and easiest thing I'm seeing is to up that meager developer hardware budget.

kakes ,

My last phone lasted me 10 years, and even then I was tempted to just swap out some parts to keep it running.

There's no reason 10+ years couldn't be the norm for a smartphone, at least for people that don't need a portable RTX 4090.

kakes ,

I feel like the most fun part would be when you get up to speed so instead of getting torn apart you'd just be high-speed vibing.

Like, the part after getting torn to shreds.

kakes ,

I don't have links, but at least from what I've heard, they were washing people down the drains afterward.

kakes ,

Once you've been rich, you get certain privileges that are difficult to remove from the equation entirely, like education, connections, and (at least generally speaking) health. You also get a lot of leeway by having a safety net to fall back on.

But honestly, all that aside, big props to him for at least giving it a shot.

kakes ,

Gonna come clean: everything I know about this guy I learned from this very post lol.

kakes ,

I'm the furthest thing from an expert on this whole situation, but the fact that he was able to "give up" being poor once he had a health problem implies to me that there definitely was a safety net.

kakes ,

With all the other AI articles I see posted to Lemmy, this article is in good company.

kakes ,

This is the only answer that matters right here.

kakes ,

10h 14m total in the last week, according to my phone. So a bit more than an hour a day on average.

kakes ,

Porn is 100% allowed on Lemmy. Maybe not on your instance (I'm too lazy to check), but Lemmy as a whole doesn't block porn.

Have you looked at the lemmynsfw instance?

kakes ,

Is this that "hashtag blessed" all the kids are talking about these days?

kakes ,

The other one is actually a scoop of Cookies 'n Cream ice cream.

What is it about the text messages and emails sent by older people that make me feel like I'm having a stroke?

Maybe they're used to various shortcuts in their writing that they picked up before autocorrect became common, but these habits are too idiosyncratic for autocorrect to handle properly. However, that doesn't explain the emails I've had to decipher that were typed on desktop keyboards. Has anyone else younger than 45 or so felt similarly frustrated with geriatrics' messages?

@asklemmy

kakes ,

In the US, the average life expectancy is 79.7 years old. Half of that is 39.87, and looking at demographics the median age is even lower.

So yes, 45 year olds are easily older than most people in the US at least. I think that's a fair statement.

kakes ,

And then there's Lemmy, which is an echo chamber of people jerking off in the other direction.

kakes ,

On the one hand, one lifetime is not nearly long enough to do all the things I want to do.

On the other hand, I've been severely depressed before, and the biggest thing that got me through those times was knowing that I only need to get through one lifetime - which again, really isn't that long.

Overall, I don't think I would ever want to be immortal, but I would gladly take a long extension if some kind of djinn were to offer it.

kakes ,

Biden could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot a Supreme Court Justice.

kakes ,

I really miss having a reason to walk all day, like when I was in university. Now I work from home, and while I can walk around the block of whatever, it just isn't nearly the same.

kakes ,

I do have a few things within walking distance, but it's like, a gas station and a restaurant. I do walk to those when I need to, but I try not to go off I can help it, just to save money. (That's another frustration - that every reason to get out costs money.)

Sadly, there's a grocery store just outside "walking range" of my house. The last place I lived, I loved walking to the store every day for fresh groceries, but here it just isn't feasible.

Fortunately I should be moving soon, though, and this is all definitely going to be in mind when we choose a place.

kakes ,

I have a dog, and we walk around the block(s), but it's boring. When I can, I drive my dog down to the forest paths for a walk, but that's like, a whole event.

kakes ,

I've considered this, I do have a standing desk already. I agree it feels a bit depressing though haha.

kakes ,

Ngl I like this idea. I highly doubt there's much around me worth noting, but I'll absolutely check it out and do what I can.

kakes ,

Already have one. I guess I'm including that when I say "walking around the block." Like, I do it, but it's boring and feels like a chore.

Honestly, maybe I'm just spoiled because until recently I lived next to a park with a lake that I loved taking my pupper around.

kakes ,

Someone else recommended StreetComplete, which I'll definitely be checking out.

Loved playing Pokémon Go, but honestly it's not as fun now that my friends don't play, sadly.

kakes ,

Honestly, the idea of adding another hobby to my Jenga tower of hobbies is a bit scary, but you aren't wrong that it would get me out more. Might be worth a shot (pun intended).

kakes ,

Oh interesting, I kinda dig that.

kakes ,

Ngl that's a interesting idea. Would definitely want it running locally, though.

kakes ,

Haha well that's uhh....

kakes ,

On the bright side, creative writing is much more merit-based than being a billionaire is.

SUVs made up 20% of global emissions growth and 55% of car sales globally in 2023 ( slrpnk.net )

This is just insane. Not only are cars themself mostly unnecessary, if the right infrastructure is provided, but SUVs also use more resources to run and be produced then small cars, without any advantage over them. So an obvious waste, which could easily be cut to reduce emissions....

kakes ,

If we're naming modes of transportation that pollute, it would be remiss not to point out the worst one: ships.

kakes ,

That's honestly a very fair point.

kakes ,

Huh? I've heard "heaven on Earth" many times.

kakes ,

So like, do we want this stuff to degrade or not?

I'm being facetious of course, but it seems ridiculous to advocate for this when any color of plastic is just as bad in one way or another.

I've got two words that nobody wants to hear: Plastic Tax.

kakes ,

I swear every article posted to Lemmy about LLMs are written by my 90 year old grandpa, given how out of touch they are with the technology. If I see another article about what ChatGPT "believes"...

This is what I learned on tiktok today. I obviously have my algorithm very finely tuned but I don't see anything this insightful on any other social media site. ( lemmy.world )

full disclosure i was accidentally logged out today and scrolled for 5 minutes and it was pure pure absolute uncut dogshit i mean god awful bad. so i don't blame people. but on my account it knows what i want

kakes ,

One thing the internet has taught me more than anything else is that no matter what weird thought or problem you might have, you aren't alone.

kakes ,

With the internet, anything is possible! ✨️

kakes ,

The thing is, I kinda get it in a way. Like, having an account lets them offer so many more useful features, and over time they might just see it as not worth supporting two "types" of users, so they lean more on requiring an account.

Obviously, a lot of this is driven by execs trying to make their line go up, but even without that it does make sense to a point. Not that I agree with it at all, but I see how it would happen.

kakes ,

"You decipher the runes - they say 'Drop and Run'."

kakes ,

That's 100 rounds, seems like plenty of time to me.

kakes ,

I kinda want to put that into a game word-for-word and see what happens. My money's on TPK.

kakes ,

Not really, it's just a regular orb that glows with a dark energy and floats in the air due to a hyperspherical extrusion into 4-dimensional space. Nothing crazy.
