Literally cloudflare tunnel, sorry my dude.

@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Not sure how different the cloud one vs self hosted one is. TBH I'd skip self hosting a Kanban board.

We love to be the home of smaller communities, but for sure, any larger ones should look into running on their own setup. If you need help, drop us a line!

jelloeater85 ,

So glorified help desk folks... Kids these days don't have a clue how anything actually works...

jelloeater85 ,

I've been using NoMachine a lot for remote desktop and it works great! SSH for everything else tho. Never really liked VNC, was always a RDP person.

Welcome to Lemmy, here's your free copy of Linux 😂

The key is to tag all your posts, so other people can find them. You get followers here and there, but not too often. I never post of Lemmy, but post a ton of stuff on Mastodon. TBH, I mostly doom scroll RSS these days.

Basically Inoreader -> InstaPaper -> Mastodon

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I love Inoreader cause it's got a paywall jumper built in, even on the free plan. I've been wanting to get a self hosted one, but they are all a PITA to setup or don't have a good multi device sync.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Different things for different needs.

I get all my news from RSS feeds and get JUST my social media from Mastodon. Lemmy is more for the quick Reddit fix.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Lemmy has the issue that it's user base is small and click-y. Still better then Reddit though.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

OMG! Thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️

It's not easy keeping things up sometimes, but we're always looking for ways to deliver more for less, while still keeping things snappy.

It's hard, but without the community, we would just be some nerds with too much time on our hands 😅

Much love for y'all!!!

Same, just use FolderSync to get photos to it. Works like a cham.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

It also depends on what you are looking for content wise. Lemmy the platform does have a ... Interesting... History for sure. On Lemmy.World I have very little patience for misogyny and being shitty twords queer folks. So I guess, "it's complicated" is a unfortunate answer.
NGL Mastodon and BlueSky are where I go to interact with other folks, vs Lemmy which I just get the old Reddit doom scroll from.

Best part about Debian. Once you install it, you have, Debian. Nothing more, nothing less.

Which RSS aggregator do you use? I cannot seem to find one that works for me.

I cannot stand google news any more, too much spam, clickbait and advertisement. So I decided to try to selfhost an RSS aggregator to make myself a news feed that I would be comfortable with. Being RSS such an "ancient" thing I thought there will be many mature systems, but I'm not sure that's the case.....

@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

I've looked at other options as well over they years. I just ended up with Inoreader. You get 150 feeds for free and the interface is amazing. Also works with a ton of different apps.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Ah, neat. Been wanting to add all my peeps on Flickr to it. I'm curious how their "magic" option works. Also might be able to do neat stuff w their API.

eBay and look for used Dell servers. I'd go for a Dell R2x0 series for a starter box. Maybe a used Dell Workstation if you want a tower.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

My man!!! I forget about this site!

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Matrix is nice and Mattermost is basically self hosted Slack. Probably better off with Matrix, if you don't need voice. Mattermost I'd you do. Rocket chat seems nice as well.
I'd probably run Matrix and Mumble?

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, for business I use both and Slack is quite nice to work with. Everyone forgets the hidden cost of running your own chat server. It's fine for a hobby, but I'd always have a larger company run critical back end services. They have the time and the money to invest in keeping things working when it matters most.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Neat! I'll check it out!

I didn't get good at cooking till I cut wayyy back on meat. Now I make tons on Asian and Indian dishes, sooo spicy and tasty. I do eat a lot of chickpeas, but bocca crumbles are pretty good as well. Morningstar makes nice vegan chicken as well.

You need to try Regiolith DM. Your gonna love it.

Any big moves would be discussed with the community. We aren't the best at communicating sometimes, but we do care about supporting the user base here. We would never want to put anyone in a bad spot.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

We'd definitely do something like that ❤️

I think a lot of folks don't realize how hard it is to run a website.

Everyone says "too bad, you caused it yourself by being this big", well someone had to do it...

All we ever really wanted was a nice place for folks to express themselves. And the thing is, the Fedi is only going to get bigger, if it wasn't us specifically, it would have been another server that would have gotten big.

The whole team here has dumped 1000's of hours into keeping this thing alive. It's just rough to see the comments here.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

We would never just drop a whole platform with 1000's of users. Any huge changes like that would 100% have community involvement.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

That's the whole thing. It's not about the software per say, it's about the users and the whole concept of a federated internet. We all really believe in bringing back the best of the old internet.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Comments like this are why that survey was created in the first place. Needing info on how to do things better.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

The mod team here works very hard to filter spam out, it's actually really bad if you don't have automation and a large team.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

It depends on what instance you joined and what instances you post to.

We try and be as fair as possible here at Lemmy.World / FHF.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

An instance is a server that provides both a place to login and communities to browse.

You can have a account on Lemmy.World, but browse and comment on communities on servers such as lemm.ee. Likewise folks that have accounts registered on lemm.ee can post on communities on lemmy.world.

The servers talk to each other via the ActivityPub protocol. I've seen folks use the email analogy, but I think it confuses more folks referring to it like that.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Just to clarify for more techy folks, it can also be a group of servers as well, it's all based off a single domain name for inbound requests. Outbound, they just need to announce the right return domain.

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Does everything have to be rewritten in Rust? 🤣

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Eh, I think a lot of it is right tool for the right job. I see Rust being used in a lot of places it doesn't make sense. As a C replacement sure, go for it. CLi apps... Okay I guess? I've just seen folks build stuff just as good with GoLang or much faster with Python. I think there is a very vocal group of Rust devs in the FOSS space, which I think makes a lot of folks think it's more popular then it really is, especially in a professional setting.

Content / Image posting restrictions (based on network)

Just wanted to keep everyone in the loop. If you encounter an issue where you cannot post or comment, but voting is functioning correctly, it is most likely because we have implemented a block for VPN & Tor users. If you are using these services, you can still take part in activities such as voting, reporting posts, and...

jelloeater85 ,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Ah, yeah, I wish there was a better way to let clients and browsers know. I'll add a note to the sidebar at least.
