@indigoparadox@mastodon.social

I'm interested in things (computers, mostly. Old computers, handheld computers, personal computers, minicomputers, etc). Sometimes I also like manga, Pokemon, Vocaloid, or other things.

I like programming as a hobby. Mainly in C and Python but I try to branch out sometimes if appropriate. I also like sensors and automation. Check my media tab for more!

I am 30 or 40 years old. 🦝

If this factory ever produces a shell that can actually be fired, I'll be very unhappy.

I was once again mistaken for a bot, so here's a picture of me holding a snake. As far as I know, bots can't hold snakes. Not yet. We will be in deep trouble if they ever learn how to.

@lowqualityfacts Pretty sure I can find precedent for python on a bot.

I understand the alternate reality about the last election. But I don't understand the alternate reality about COVID. That's the most wild thing about it.

Is it that COVID isn't really a deadly infectious disease?
Or was it made in a lab?
Or is it deadly, but the vaccine isn't real?
Or did the vaccine cause the disease?
Or is the vaccine ... mind control? IDK?

There isn't really a cohesive story so it ought to be very awkward for any politician to claim to be a champion of this theory.

indigoparadox ,
@indigoparadox@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird My mom fully blames Trump for COVID. Never mind the persistent reservoirs in other countries and the northern European countries that tried ”herd immunity” with a disease that doesn't give durable immunity for those who've had it.

It has a long, asymptomatic incubation period. People love social norms and if someone says ”I'm not sick” even if they have no way of knowing that, well, not believing them is just rude!

COVID was inevitable. So's the next, worse, thing.

I don't have a ton of faith in humanity, but I do appreciate how we've all decided to side with the orcas in the Great Orcas vs. Boats War. An orca could literally bite my arm off tomorrow and I would still be team orca.

indigoparadox ,
@indigoparadox@mastodon.social avatar

@lowqualityfacts An Orca isn't gonna come on land and pollute your house before biting your arm off. If you wind up in contact with an Orca, it's because you took positive steps towards that encounter. 😤

Exciting ant queen collecting trip in AZ. Why does it feel like all the coolest ants are in the South and South West. It's not fair.

I decided to find out if any progress had been made on the science behind why some ants are attracted to electrical fields. After filtering out exterminators (it's so demoralizing to search for information on creatures you love and find nothing but people who know nothing about them boasting about how they will kill them all) I found what looked like a blog. But, who the heck is "James Brown"? Never heard of the dude. Maybe he could be my new friend if he likes ants enough to blog about them!

UPDATE: NY Governor Kathy Hochul said on CNN last night that she is considering a ban on masks.

This is absolutely shameful! New York has suffered so much from COVID, and COVID is not over. We should be normalizing and depoliticizing masks, not banning them.

    @luckytran I took the time to write a civil and cited objection to such a ban on the contact form on her website, there. It's really scary that such a thing could be considered by anyone with power in our state!

    @emma @futurebird I try not to be too hard on her because being an evil vampire is kind of a tradition for New York governers. She's not very smooth about it, but none of them ever really were...

    These ants are so fat. Look at this major. She’s basically a proto-replete. It’s not just her, there are many fat ants in the nest. You can see how honey pot ants evolved. It’s the most extreme version of this food storage strategy practiced by ordinary carpenters.

    Creatures with scientific names that betray how frustrated the scientists got trying to sort out their taxonomy.

    Probolomyrmex (multiple species)
    Camponotus confusus

    There have to be more of these. I'd love to know the full story behind the names. Really there is a place in the world for a book that just goes into interesting taxonomic controversies and frustrations.

    Have you encountered any scientific names that hint at someone pulling out their hair?

    indigoparadox ,
    @indigoparadox@mastodon.social avatar

    @futurebird I don't have what you're looking for, but I like to take every remotely relevant opportunity to mention Corvus Ossifragus, which is such a metal name for what we boringly call the "Fish Crow." (Tho I gotta admit, the bones are some of my favorite parts of a good ol' salmon!)

    Bookbags! They are too deep. They eat pencils, they eat pens. And I am not going to stand for it anymore.

    Why is it so hard to have shallow pockets near the top for small items? What do they think people put in bags? Huge long boards? Footballs? Long footballs?

    I've had enough. I'm going to sew in extra little shallow pockets or maybe fill the bottom with foam IDK. This is the crisis of our times.

    @indigoparadox@mastodon.social avatar

    @futurebird I've tried making organizers by stapling foam to cardboard but it's tough to get right. 😩

    Official campaign video says "unified reich" to describe Trump victory.

    Campaign blames the intern.

    I guess we should be happy they aren't just doubling down and saying "what's wrong with unity" or whatever.

    Mom found a little friend while she was folding her sheets. I managed to rescue it [pronoun tentative] into a jar and take some pictures, tho they're not the best. I've already released it onto the front lawn.

    I assume it's an ant... maybe a new queen? It's about the size of a US quarter, which seems rather large. I'm not an expert. I'm a little curious... Paging @futurebird, maybe? 🥺

    Sorry again for the lousy pictures... I didn't wanna hold it up on its journey for too long...

    I've been reading some history books about Europe in the middle ages. The matter of the education of kings is incredibly interesting. It seemed nearly universally recognized that an excellent education is essential to a family holding on to power. And even in the controversies of the day (such as religion) children of the ruling class were exposed to a surprisingly wide range of ideas. Including those treated as heresy for the general population.

    indigoparadox ,
    @indigoparadox@mastodon.social avatar

    @futurebird I think this was, like, Aristotle's whole deal when it came to justifying the aristocracy? Like, a tiny minority educated and prepared from birth to rule would do it better than the common rabble.
