There are a number of storage technologies in the works right now. However, I think they will result in a new type of memory device rather than HDDs getting cheaper. Kind of like how a stack of CDs isn't cheaper now than it was in 2005, rather there are new types of storage that offer more memory and longer life spans.

So if you are definetly going HDD, prices are probably not going to get that much cheaper, if any cheaper at all.

I'd say keep an eye out for sales & that will probably make a bigger difference than waiting a set amount of time.

hazeebabee ,

That tech looks super cool & might be worth waiting for, but from what I've been reading it is still being perfected and will likely see big improvements fairly quickly after release.

Heres a clip from this article I think is relevent:
Teh said the new drives have double the capacity of storage systems using conventional 16TB perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) drives, and this can be doubled again over the next four years. The company is projecting 4TB platters in the next couple of years, with 5TB coming shortly thereafter, and 6TB out beyond the current roadmap.

So there's a chance you wait for those drives, pay a little extra cuz the tech is new, then have something twice as good get released a year or two later.

It's definetly a tricky situation & ultimately up to you and what you want.
Do you need that extra storage asap, or is it more of a eventually kind thing? Does new tech have its own intrinsic value to you, or is it more about price per terabyte?

Good luck with your decision! I know how hard these kind of choices can be. You never know what the market will look like after you finally make that big purchase.

hazeebabee ,

Mesh networks have been made using ham radios! It's not ready for the general public since you need a ham operators lisence & their range is limited by line of sight. But if you own a large property, you can network your own space using the tech. It's also a good back up in the case of a large scale infrastructure disruption.

Heres a link :)

hazeebabee ,

Have you tried other browsers? I checked on Firefox & it works. Interesting bug, I hope it doesn't effect you for too long

hazeebabee ,

I'm glad you found one that works :) ive heard lots of good things about voyager as a web app.

Also: I didn't know ios firefox was different than android firefox. Super interesting

hazeebabee OP , (edited )

Close, but this guy has these eye like holes towards the upper center of his wings, and the lower lobe is a slightly different shape where it attaches to the body. I wish I had been able to got a pic while his wings were open.

Edited to add: thanks for the idea though :) someone else did ID what I think is the right species, the polyphemus moth

hazeebabee OP ,

Yeah! I think thats it! Especially the waves on the upper wing and the dark spots. The antennae also look the same.

Super interesting to think he'll only be alive for at most one more week. Still glad I saved him from the kindergardeners lol

Thanks for helping with the ID :)

hazeebabee OP ,

Right!? I wish I was small enough I could pet his fur and maybe fly around a bit lol

hazeebabee ,

What a treasure trove of deep sea anus jokes I didn't realize I needed in my life lmao

hazeebabee ,

Yes sir, thank you sir. And this one is bailey's, and this one is bailey's a bit bigger, and this one is about as close as you can get to baileys without gettin' your eyes wet.
watercolor painting of a bottle of bailey's done in the style of old greg

hazeebabee ,

I hope you know you're a gift to humanity 🤣

hazeebabee ,

Definetly! AI is a tool and still needs a human to manage it. It works best when used to augment existing work flows & when used by someone who is able to fine tune what it's doing when necessary.

Even AI security could be helpful to flag things for a human to then look into, but giving it complete authority is going to lead to so many issues.

I surveyed over 500 solarpunks, this is what they answered! ( slrpnk.net )

Hi everyone! A bit over a month ago I made a survey about Solarpunk and shared it here. Now, I finally present you the findings of the survey! I am adding a few pics here for a preview and if you are interested, go check the link where there is a full description of the findings!!...

hazeebabee ,

That video effected how i think about modern solutions not necessarily how i picture a potantial solarpunk future. So I voted yes to the question.

I agree just slapping trees on buildings is not going to magically fix modern society's much deeper issues. I do still think having roof top gardens is something that could work for a much more advanced civilization with different construction methods and materials.

I dunno i think it has a place in the more imaginative side of solarpunk... a living building (like the ships and buildings from octavia butlers liliths brood series) could definetly support gardens. Or specially grown tree houses. Or hollowed out "mountains" with sunlight vents and an entire forest on the surface. Ooooo or maybe some floating islands where people live inside the verticle garden beds.

Modern concrete and steel based architecture is definetly not ready to have that level of greenery integrated into the building structures. One of the communes I lived at had a rooftop garden, & we had tons of issues with leaks and just the sheer weight of all that dirt and plant material on the structure.

I still love the idea though, lol just not in the modern era.

hazeebabee ,

Not all communists are tankies. I understand many people (especially Americans) assume that connection because of the cold war era propaganda. However, many self identified communists have no respect or admiration for authoritarian states like China or the USSR.

& I think solarpunk tends to draw in communists, anarchists, libertarians and other radical views. To create a significant change in how humans relate to the environment around us, we would also likely need a significant change in how we relate to eachother. This means some sort of change to our modern system of profit based sucess (i.e. modern capitalism).

hazeebabee ,

That sounds super cool! Warehouses especially seem like a good candidate for gardens. They're large, typically flat on top, & are often surrounded by paved parking areas meaning they get full sun. Plus the interiors often have easy access to the ceiling making any repairs very simple.

Lol I will say our leaky roof garden was the product of hippie construction, so it was beautiful and really cool-- but not the most carefully engineered 🤣

hazeebabee ,

Oooo we can dream, and in that dreaming maybe find a way to shape reality :)

hazeebabee ,

Good point! I'm on the same page of understanding "trees on buildngs" to mean general greenery.

Your comment did get me thinking: It would be cool if we could find a way to direct tree roots. Like how in yards if a tree root breaks into the water lines, they'll fill that space since it is clear and full of nutrients. It's bad for the pipes, but if done purposefully could maybe help mitigate the damage caused by large tree root systems.

hazeebabee ,

Super useful links, thanks for sharing :) it's so cool to see all the different ways people have approached the questions & all the different solutions they came up with.

Maybe I'm just a sucker for plants on buildings though lol

hazeebabee ,

Wow! So beautiful :) fig trees really are something special

hazeebabee ,

Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Discord is well known to many people & there isn't a good open source group call and message system.

It would be awesome if there was another choice, but I'd rather have discord book club than no book club at all.

hazeebabee ,

Excited for the new book :) I'm hoping this time around I'll be able to actually make it to the Sunday meetings

hazeebabee ,

Ooooo I loved that. The magazine has lots of really good shorts, I'm excited to comb through their archives :)

hazeebabee ,

Such a beautiful game :) one of my favorite precision platformers

Saving Seeds with Bonnetta Adeeb of Ujamaa Cooperative Farming Alliance | Food & Justice ( www.fjpodcast.com )

Bonnetta Adeeb, founder & President of STEAM ONWARD, Inc, a Non-profit 501(c3) organization in Southern Maryland, as well as the projects: Ujamaa Cooperative Farming Alliance (UCFA) and Ujamaa Seeds. UCFA is a collective of emergent and seasoned growers who cultivate heirloom seeds and grow culturally relevant plants for food,...

hazeebabee ,

That's a super cool project, seed saving and sharing that information is so important.

I was hoping the video would have more specific tips and knowledge about seed saving, but it was still an interesting glimpse into Bonnettas motivations for doing what she does.

hazeebabee ,

Thanks for linking the comic! Such a cute storyline & artwork. I'm super excited to see the project continue to grow & hope for more animations to get put out.

working on cover for my next solarpunk novel ( slrpnk.net )

I’m swimming-with-mermaids delighted to reveal the cover of my next solarpunk mystery novel, Missing Mermaid. Right now I’m deciding how best to arrange the text on the cover. Do you recommend option one (author name on her tail) or option two (author name and title both up in the sky)?...

hazeebabee ,

I like them both up top. It makes the image pop more & looks more traditionally bookish to me.

I think splitting makes the most sense for covers that have a series title up top by the book title.

I do think they both look good & it doesn't make too much of a difference.

Good luck with you book launch :) I know it can be a tough market for new/indie writers

hazeebabee ,

That's a great mindset to have. I write as well & it's for the love of craft, definetly not the paycheck lol

Stories are just so fun to tell, I'm looking forward to reading yours :)

The Solarpunk Survey 2024 ( leidenuniv.eu.qualtrics.com )

Hello everyone! For my bachelor’s thesis, I am making a survey to find out what Solarpunks think of the movement, the genre and the community. I believe Solarpunks are often curious about the thoughts of others in the community, so I think this could be another instance to promote discussion and interesting conversations...

hazeebabee ,

Quick survey to take, maybe 5 min. Just for anyone wondering :)

hazeebabee ,

Do you ever think about how confused far future archeologists will be when they dig up old museums with all these fossils from wildly varying time periods?

Would they infer that it must have been some museum? Will they think those life forms coexisted? Will they blame it on aliens? Will they be capable of reading the engraved plaques if those survive in the wreckage?

Would a monstrosity like the one pictured above confuse them?

hazeebabee ,

I reccomend etsy. You have to watch out for drop shippers, but by being concious you can normally find high quality hand made clothing.

Signs it's a real person making what youre buying:

  • Custom fit options (can send your measurements)
  • Similar materials used in the different designs
  • Photos use mannequins or the same model or have the same background
  • The designs cannot be purchased elsewhere
  • The blurb gives real information about a real person & their story

Also: once you've found a clothing maker you like, you can often buy directly from them, bypassing etsy taking a cut of the profits.

Heres one I found:
https://www.etsy.com/listing/1069069106/dark-red-anorakvintage-trench

In general tho, there are some really unique and cool clothing makers on etsy and I've gotten some of my favorite things from creators who sell using that platform.

Good luck finding the jacket of your dreams :)

I love the way the paint color and wood finish compliment eachother! The shed is super cute. Looks like a good size too.

What's the inside like? Any built in shelves or other cool things?

hazeebabee ,

Super interesting compound. I wish somehow I could watch footage of strengs experiments. I bet some of those explosions would be really cool in slow mo lol

hazeebabee ,

Super cool. I can't imagine having to explain what happened to the lab manager after burning through the lab floor and a few feet of gravel and sand below lol

hazeebabee ,

But what about the stoned geology guys? the stoned stone lovers, the geology ganjis, the crystal cannabis connoisseurs, the rock lovin rockers, the dabbing dirt collectors?

hazeebabee ,

It worked for me lol.

It's the one where he's leaned forward really far (bent at the waist with his butt out) talking into a bunch of mics. Likely to keep his suit from having unflattering lines in the front.

hazeebabee ,

It definetly does. Small niche subs dont attract advertisers the way the massive subs do.

It makes sense advertisers are going to target spaces with the most people

hazeebabee ,

Definetly still alot of good content on reddit. Lemmy is very new so the niche communities arent here, and lemmy doesnt have years of post and comment history to fill things out.

I do think with time those things will happen on lemmy & that the administrative priorities of reddit will slowly make that space less useful. Right now both have their uses, but i have high hopes for the furture of decentralized social media.

hazeebabee ,

Such cool objects. I love the symmetry of the stable knot formations too. Math really can be magical sometimes

hazeebabee ,

I really like that interpritation of the use of light. Hope, even in perilous circumstances.

Rotating banners on /r/piracy ( lemmy.dbzer0.com )

Hey mates, recently I've developed a tool to use the GenerativeAI on the AI Horde to created random avatars and banners on lemmy. To keep things spicy, I wanted to deploy to rotate the /c/piracy banner daily, as I've done in a bunch of other communities like !stable_diffusion_art and the lemmy.dbzer0.com....

hazeebabee ,

Yo db dont let these haters get you down. I think it looks like a really cool project and love the idea of a shifting banner than anyone can contribute prompts to. I also love the idea of backgroud details being influenced by various metrics of the community.

AI is a tool (just like photoshop, electric lawn mowers, and combustion engines). Anyone who thinks its replacing artists are really underestimating the editing needed to produce something good from AI generators. And this is comming from a writer who loves how much AI has helped with various parts of the process.

hazeebabee , (edited )

I see where youre comming from & also think its important to support artists I like, and I do. I think both AI and artists can coexist & serve different purposes.

Something like this, using AI for a banner, is using a tool for people to create something they couldnt/wouldnt before. It doesnt mean I'm not going to buy a cool print or painting from an artist I like.

& I think its cool to have something that aggregates information and makes it accesible and easy to work with for the masses. Its messed up that it is currently controlled by corporate interests, but there are also people working on FOSS ai. Its this kind of snapshot of humanity in its current state, that I think goes beyond any particular artist/writer/person.

I get being worried about it taking jobs, but I think new ones will spring up to take their place.

(Or really optimistically maybe well see some sort of radical change that will make the concept of 'earning a living' obsolete, like UBI or something)

Edited to add: as a writer, people who buy my writing wouldnt just use ai to replace me. If anything it can supplement my work by making it easier for fans to make fanart & help build hype around the universe and characters that I created.

hazeebabee ,

Yeah! Thats definetly a step in the right direction. Programs like that will help ease the transition towards a new system as technology continues advancing.

Now we just need more countries/people to jump on board lol

hazeebabee ,

Super beautiful. I love the wood frame, it realy compliments the gold nicely

hazeebabee ,

In addition to what others have said (neem oil, keep it quarentined) also make sure to clean and sanitize the surrounding area and any area its been in recently to avoid reinfection.

Also mites hate airflow. Keeping plants in spaces that arent too closed off can help discourage mites from setting up shop.

hazeebabee ,

The wiki looks great! i was so excited to see some of the things I wrote in the code of conduct

As always thanks for all the work you do running the instance :)

hazeebabee ,

Giant group texts. One has over 30 people, mostly used for baby/marriage announcements. Then a bunch of other group texts for different social groups (stoners, siblings, camping, etc).
