I'm replying to your comment! This is fun!

@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

You seem alright

@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

We're doing it! We're creating organic content.

Should probably make this more interesting... Why don't you tell me about your username? I'm picturing a Norse type person in sandals

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Nice, you sound cool. I'll keep an eye out for you now! And you nailed my username. It's supposed to be a couple things, but mostly just fun to say haha

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Look at the baby over here. I remember 33... Actually not really.

What I like about the fedi is I don't care if it's a "success" in the same sense that the closed social media sites have to be. It's not like this project has quarterly profit targets to hit or else it'll have to enshittify or else the investors pull out and we're all screwed because there's no more app.fediverse.com monolith or whatever.

Nah it's just us doing our thing and enjoying ourselves. The activity around here already reached a critical mass a while ago, to the point that there's more content than I could hope to enjoy, so anything from here is vegan gravy.

Thank you for your service! I don't have much energy for posting myself, but I do try to be an active (and appreciative) consumer. 😁

We're Watching Facebook Die ( www.wheresyoured.at )

In the first quarter of 2024, Meta made $36.45 billion dollars - $12.37 billion dollars of which was pure profit. Though the company no longer reports daily active users, it now uses another metric: “family daily active people.” This number refers to “registered and logged-in users of one or more of Facebook’s Family...

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Facebook's capital and access to oceans of customer data sure isn't going to die, though. Maybe mutate

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Oh nice, if I'm understanding you

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

That's undeniably a good thing, but I'm still cynical that capital will ever find a truly "ethical" niche to exploit.

Of course that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to legally constrain it as much as possible, as I've just learned has been done in the EU, thank you!

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Rofl reminds me of an acquaintance saying how anyone can be discriminated against (true), "like me," they went on, "for being tall and blonde" (that's not really...)

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Damn neoliberalism, made the conservative ethos more palatable and confusing 😪

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Nah, travel is a sin imho

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

I found excuses for myself to walk and it's made a difference. YMMV depending on what's around you, but like my friend and I walk to a nearby coffee shop for our lunch dates, and I've got a decent walk to get to the gym, which impacts how my legs/back feel hugely.

Even just walking to a corner store to get a sparkling juice or whatever is nice.

You got anything like that where you're at?

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Damn is that the suburbs? Yeah, try to find a place with more walkable/bikeable amenities if you can, for your next place.

The only other thing I can think of is try finding a bench a ways off to read on, or just listen to audio books or something

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Always

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

The means of production benefiting the workers directly? How did this happen in USA??

But sounds very nice

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

This is really embarrassing, but I played so much battlefield 3 once that I felt the urge to reflexively "spot" some people walking in the distance (IRL 💀) to see whether they were friend or foe.

I didn't have a keyboard, so there's nothing I could even do about it, but the fact that I felt the urge really made me pause.

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Sounds pretty accurate to me. The phenomenon op is asking about is a facet of that effect.

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

I agree they're not 1:1 but imo you can't feel the "actions in real life" part without being heavily incepted by a video game's loops, like in your thoughts and dreams.

But I get it a lot less because I don't game as much these days

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Same, but for drawing on paper. It took me a while to break this habit. My left fingers would reflexively twitch, like they were rolling over those key

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

It's never happened to you? It's not like the thought actually makes it very far. It might just get like a momentary impulse, like "keep right side clear" or "hope I get a line."

But even those are too complex. It's more abstract and pre conscious/verbal (at least for me).

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Not exactly IRL, but I'll type g st in basically any bare terminal if I'm trying to remember what I'm doing (it's my alias for git status -bs. Even when it's not actually versioned lol.

And of course the classic :wq in any text field

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

There are also privately run and hosted forums. They've been a real nice reprieve as the greater soc media landscape has become the dominant form of cultural expression on the internet

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Link?

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

4. Educators being encouraged to teach to the test, rather than teach critical engagement with texts in their entirety.

Emphasis mine. IMO this has got to be a huge part of the equation, at least from my anecdotal experience. It was always nice when the instructor would get extra passionate and go "off script" to impress upon us some concept that they felt was especially important - even though we weren't being framed on it.

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Interesting. I went the opposite direction, and prefer it. Grasses greener type deal maybe

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

A good loaf is a good loaf

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

I believe in you

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Gym membership. Previously I was doing some working out on my own, but it's nice to get out, and easier to bring friends along.

I did the typical thing: first week of January signed up to the YMCA and committed to a couch-to-5k, and have to admit I'm feeling a lot lot lot better.

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Not sure it's so binary. I don't know the first thing about fashion, but I do like having different kinds of socks, even if no one else sees them.

I do this kinda like magical thinking thing where I think about how I want my day to go and pick socks/etc that go with that.

I know it's not the most mentally healthy thing

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

That's a great way to rephrase it. That's exactly what that is: I know my choices don't actually have any magical effects. Pretending like they do gives me the feeling of control, even though I know intellectually that I can only control myself.

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Sorry I misspoke. I meant people who I fear socially so I try to stay in their good books

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Just outlaw it already. It was a bad idea

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

I'm very against this unless it's praxis

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Yeah things that follow a kind of lexical "script" that you don't want to get creative with would be pretty easy to generate. Farewells, greetings, dear Johns, may he rest in peaces, etc etc

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Is it because they wouldn't be approved? If I have leftovers near the end of the year I just take a few Fridays off, giving myself some long weekends

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

God, same. But please realise that it's not your fault if you have more work than can be done. Take the time off to refresh. Both your mental health and your work performance will be the better for it.

I've recently got in the habit of scheduling all of my time off for the year in one go. Sure sometimes I regret it, because I'm right in the middle of something when time off comes, but ah well

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

You can't it but I'm crying and saluting right now

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

More like my boss has anxiety and can't handle confrontation, which like, fair enough.

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Yep, which is why you've got to sell while folks think it's still pumping time. Then everyone in the know dumps and it's better luck next time to the bag holders.

If you aren't in the know, well, hope you're lucky.

grrgyle ,
@grrgyle@slrpnk.net avatar

Definitely not a "thing," and extra definitely not contemporary.

I've only ever known one other person to say it, and that was the ex partner my comment above was about! They had a really playful way of speaking, and I realise in retrospect I've unconsciously taken on a lot of their little idiosyncrasies.

I had to look it up, but it looks like it's a reference to this line from High Anxiety with Mel Brooks.
