LastPass had an outage of nearly twelve hours yesterday, where users couldn't login to access their password vault.

This is one of the (many) reasons why you shouldn't use essential tools that are either cloud-first or cloud-bound. There are decent alternatives, like KeePassXC or Bitwarden with the selfhosted server (Vaultwarden).

    @breadandcircuses How much is just a change in how we communicate and the medium available? I read everything I could find at the local library during my "teenage socialist" phase, but I feel I got a way deeper understanding of the subject from a few dozen youtube videos and online forum discussions. Books written by historical figures just don't connect the same.

    I think there's something fitting about social media being the vehicle for a spread of social justice.

    I can kind of see the argument for not allowing states to remove people from the ballot for the presidency. So it begins. Critics like astronomer Prof. Sam Lawler @sundogplanets have been calling attention the many horrible aspects of Elon Musk's SpaceX Starlink system (https://theconversation.com/an-astronomers-lament-satellite-megaconstellations-are-ruining-space-exploration-215653).

    Perhaps the greatest threat is for a Kessler Syndrome event, wherein these terrible little satellites, lose control and start smashing into each other, creating a cascade of destruction that closes off space for generations.

    ecstaticcling ,
    @ecstaticcling@pnw.zone avatar

    @mastodonmigration @sundogplanets Deorbiting older satellites is exactly what we want companies to be doing.

    There are definitely reasons to be concerned about allowing private companies to launch tens of thousands of satellites, but this aint it.

    ecstaticcling ,
    @ecstaticcling@pnw.zone avatar

    @mastodonmigration @sundogplanets What do you mean they're not particularly old? It says they're v1. It's literally the first operational version of the satellites they launched. They found a potential problem with one batch and are deorbiting them to mitigate it.

    You're right that there is no precedence for the number of satellites being proposed. There are concerns that need to be addressed. Unscientific scare mongering over bullshit is counterproductive.
