We need to do this in the US.

“Tens of thousands of demonstrators crowded onto French streets on Saturday to denounce the rise of the country’s far-right political party and call on fellow citizens to block it from taking power in snap parliamentary elections set by President Emmanuel Macron.”

@GottaLaff @onepict have to say here in Germany it doesn't seem to have helped that much against the AFD. The party leadership said it was actually good publicity. I don't know what the answer is though, maybe personal conversations. Maybe EU elections don't count as much but I'm scared.

Good morning, lets start the day with some polling data (and why not?)

While (despite everything) the Tories' opinion poll results were steadily climbing up until the 2019, since then there's been a major (almost unprecedented) decline.

In 2019 John Burb-Murdoch (FT) surmises, the Tories benefitted from support for Brexit & a media-stoked frenzy against Jeremy Corbyn. Now those (now clearly fleeting) factors are absent there are few reasons to support the Tories.

Yeah reading the words of one of the union leaders talking about the labour manifesto negotiations it sounded way more like they were talking about a workplace negotiation with the bosses, than you would expect from the party of the workers where they're all supposed to be on the same side.

I've been reading some history books about Europe in the middle ages. The matter of the education of kings is incredibly interesting. It seemed nearly universally recognized that an excellent education is essential to a family holding on to power. And even in the controversies of the day (such as religion) children of the ruling class were exposed to a surprisingly wide range of ideas. Including those treated as heresy for the general population.

Because uneducated followers are easier to manipulate and ask fewer questions. Fascism wants obedience not independent thought from its followers. The power should be only with the leaders, it's an ideology of massive power inequality.

@futurebird dictatorships in general right? Although presumably we only see the ones that crash and burn: the dictators who are quietly and competently beavering away maintaining their power, oppressing their populace not quite enough to cause a revolution and keeping the fuss to a minimum don't get on the news. Like some middle eastern kings, Saudi & all that.

Okay, this might sound weird, but this is what I'm thinking of today. I'm assuming most of you know the idiom, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth." I know it's about looking at the horse's teeth to check it's age and health, but in my heart I have an alternate history where it's about The Trojan Horse, which doesn't really even make much sense, but it's still living there rent free.

So, does anyone else do this, make up alternate histories for words or phrases? If you do, I'd love examples!

I’ve never been the sort who whines about not having enough nature in the city but something about this spring has me looking at the sidewalks with fresh eyes and I don’t always like what I see. It’s not true to say the city is “barren” There is life on the margins everywhere, here is the moss covered root of a tree home to Tetramorium and to an ant mimic spider who hides with them. I think—

    We need permeable sidewalks.

Running* just a couple of kilometers regularly after seventeen years of no exercise, and the wrong side of fifty is a process of rediscovering your body. Knees have basically kind of locked up, muscles get minor pulls in places you don't know you have muscles, calve muscles have simply vaporized.

Add 'hips' and female hormonal changes (ie. testosterone is basically nixed, which is nice) we're in uncharted levels of unfitness and bodily rediscovery.

Knees permitting, this old crone intends to run a 5K nonstop again if it kills her - which it may 😉. After that we'll see what's possible

Re this post from yesterday - https://climatejustice.social/@breadandcircuses/112173089016569816

Several commenters pointed out that while planting a tree is helpful, keeping existing forests intact, not cutting trees down, is even more important!

They’re right, obviously. We need to save mature forests, preserving their biodiversity and resilience — because monoculture tree plantations are not forests.

Even inside a city, though, trees can make a big difference in so many ways...

I noticed another article scolding “doomers” for doing it wrong. It says we shouldn’t make people sad or angry about what capitalist industry is doing to our climate and environment. The article claims a better approach is to give people hope, and emphasize positive steps they can take like planting a tree or riding a bike.

Well, sure, those things are good, and I encourage them. But even if everyone who reads this post or sees that article stops driving a car in favor of bike riding and also cheerfully begins planting trees, that still will not make any significant difference in altering the trajectory of climate breakdown.

The problem we face is much bigger than your carbon footprint or mine. And whether you feel happy or sad after reading this, that certainly will not affect the motivation of the oligarchs who own our society. Their only concern is to make more money and gain more power.

Of course you and I should take appropriate individual actions (drive less, fly less, buy less, etc.), but we also should recognize that while those actions are important, they are not sufficient. Because what we need is system change.

That will not be easy, but it’s essential.

To get a comprehensive level of system change — which is the only kind that offers any true hope of avoiding complete disaster — we must remove all those currently in power, including the billionaires who control the politicians, and replace the current system with a different one.

We must end capitalism and commence degrowth.

Yes, this is a big ask. But we're talking about life or death here, literally. So it's a bold choice we must make.

    econads ,
    @econads@chaos.social avatar

@breadandcircuses every list of personal actions against global heating should start with lobby your representative, advocate. It's not doomerism to say individual actions won't make a significant change, but it is to follow that up with "so there's nothing we can do, better party while it lasts"

Upon retiring from work at age 58 (lucky me) in 2012, I chose to leave the United States in favor of Europe, where I ended up staying in Budapest, Hungary, for six years. I rented a studio apartment near the city center, bought a used bicycle, and enjoyed a modest, inexpensive, yet comfortable lifestyle.

Since my return to the U.S. in 2018, I’ve found there are many things I miss. When I lived in Budapest, there were three different small independent bakeries within a five-minute walk from my apartment. Also in that same radius were a couple of almost literal hole-in-the-wall fruit and vegetable shops offering delicious fresh produce. And although the nearby area held no chain restaurants, it was home to several quite good local eateries.

There were clothing stores selling both new and used goods, as well as shoe stores, all of them small and independent, not necessarily carrying a wide selection, but providing high quality items at surprisingly low prices, and with friendly trustworthy service. Plus, within a five-minute walk was a practically free public transit system than made frequent stops and could take me almost anywhere I wanted to go within the city, safely, reliably, and quickly.

So I wonder, why is it that — at least in my current neighborhood in suburban Virginia — the only options for baked goods or produce or clothing or home furnishings or hardware or almost anything else are chain stores? Well, that, or freaking Amazon. Why are all other choices so limited, so few and so far between? Why does virtually everything depend upon — no, actually demand the use of a car to get there?

Most United Statesians, I suspect, have no idea that people in other countries live so differently than the way we do here. We have been sold on the idea, taught from an early age, that ours is the best way, indeed the only sensible way to do things. Anyone suggesting that a less car-centric and hyper-capitalistic culture is not only possible but desirable, that it could be much more pleasant and satisfying, not to mention safer and more friendly to the environment, well, they plainly don’t know what they’re talking about. It makes me sad and angry.
