Debunking Myth #4: “Corporate Political Donations Are Free Speech.” https://robertreich.substack.com/p/debunking-myth-4-corporate-political?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon

...by a 'moral' [sic] person, not a physical one.

By that standard of measure a dead person would be entitled to using their wealth accumulated (/stolen/ripped off, whatever...) to buy info ops until that well runs dry.

Non-physical persons (i.e. without a measurable pulse) should not have the same rights as individuals.

Prior to 1982, the SEC considered stock buybacks to be illegal stock manipulation. But under President Reagan, stock buybacks were made legal. Now, instead of investing profits into people, big corporations use them to line the pockets of wealthy shareholders. They're a scam.

dvodvo ,

@rbreich
I would be OK with it, with one proviso. Bonusus on ANY exec's pay for stock prices up to a max of inflation rate + 5%... and of commensurate value.
i.e. inflation at 4%, max bonus is 9% of base pay.

It's your turn to be a political strategist.

If Trump is found guilty, should Biden emphasize the guilty verdict or focus on abortion and democracy instead?

dvodvo ,

@rbreich

Abortion and democracy.

Everyone ALREADY knows he is guilty.
Of everything he is accused of. no re-thinking required.

Need to get to the point where any woman, , POC, persons under 30 who have zero chance of getting ahead, every veteran or presently in armed forces ...

...who votes for Trump understands that they will deserve what they get.

Trump's second-term promises:

-The largest deportation effort in US history

-Send the National Guard into cities

-Appoint a special prosecutor to go after political opponents

-Purge the federal civil service of anyone who questions his views

Fully unhinged.

Ron DeSantis signed a law that prevents municipalities in Florida from requiring that employers provide shade and water breaks for outdoor workers.

A study found that heat-related deaths in FL shot up by 88% between 2019 and 2022.

Folks, this is the GOP's vision for America.

Extending Trump's tax cuts will cost $3.5 trillion over a decade.

This is why Trump wants to cut Social Security.

So he can take a lifetime of earned benefits away from working people and gift them to the rich.

It's reverse Robin Hood.

The press in Congress asks the usual tabloid questions about the war between Mike Johnson and Marjorie Taylor Greene.

But the important question they should ask is this:

Now that Ukraine has lost several towns, thousands of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians have died, and Ukraine’s energy infrastructure has been bombed to smithereens, because they ran out of important military equipment, how do you justify your long delay of this important bill on Ukraine aid?

dvodvo ,

@randahl
Biden too plays electoral calculus.

The world's billionaires now hold a combined $14.2 trillion in assets.

That exceeds the GDP of every country in the world except the US and China.

And we’re supposed to believe the ultra-wealthy can’t afford a wealth tax?

dvodvo ,

@rbreich
The only reason to accumulate such wealth is exactly that: to have power over everyone underneath it.

There is no way they - or their grandchildren - can consume all that.

Higher taxes is actually a kind way to address this matter.

Today’s CPI report shows meat & poultry are among the highest items pushing inflation.

Maybe that's because just 4 companies now control processing of 80% of beef, nearly 70% of pork, and almost 60% of chicken.

Without competition, corporations can get away with price gouging.

dvodvo ,

@rbreich
There is not reason to not cut down meat consumption by 80%.

In fact there are very good ones. 1 unit of measure of meat takes 10 times the ressources to produce compared to 1 unit of fruits or vegetables. Livestock is a major producer of methane (powerful greenhouse gas - 17x that of CO2). Yes they fart. Land requirements are immense, crowding out wildlife

Modern fascists always attack women, immigrants, & LGBTQ+ people first. They long for a white-led, patriarchal, theocratic society.

Remember that when you see reproductive rights, gay rights, and migrant rights stripped away.

Ever notice how forgiving loans is suddenly a big problem when students get much-needed relief, but nobody blinks an eye when billionaires get their PPP loans forgiven? Or when corporations are handed billions in subsidies?

The tax gap (the gap between taxes owed and taxes collected) was $688B in 2021 — nearly half the size of last year’s deficit.

For every $1 the IRS spends auditing rich tax cheats, it can collect $12.

If the GOP truly cared about the deficit, they would fund the IRS, not gut it.

Between 1978 and 2022:

-Worker pay grew by 15%

-Top exec pay jumped by 1,209%

Major US CEOs are now paid 344 times more than their typical employees.

When I say corporate CEOs are exploiting labor, this is what I mean.

Think tipping has gotten out of control? I get it.

But the real outrage is that some tipped workers make as little as $2.13/hr.
