When I bought this titanium teapot as a gift to myself for finding a new job years ago I really felt bad about how much it cost— but I’ve decided it’s, in a way the ideal sort of expensive treat: absurdly durable, timeless, utilitarian, strange.

This one is going in my will. I hope someone takes it with them to space someday. (that is my new heirloom benchmark: how likely is this to be in the 1 ton allowance for those moving to the dyson swarm never to set foot on earth again?)

@molly0xfff feels like all updates are just trying to ensure that more and more info is available for data sets. Hard to know what to do about it as they are increasingly important for everyday life.

Easter can happen any day between March 22 and April 25

Next year, Easter will fall on Hitler’s birthday

But for some reason, the GOP wants to be outraged Easter coincides with the International Transgender Day of Visibility

They are calling out the President for somehow moving the internationally recognized day to today

Yet it’s been the same day since 2010

Weird hill to die on

…but at least you’ll be resurrected in three days to seethe again

Happy 🏳️‍⚧️ ❤️

@flexghost I was learning about the formula that is used to see what day Easter falls on, it starts by adding one to the year then dividing by 19, it is all very interesting and ends up giving the golden number.

Another characteristically brilliant Kashmir Hill story for The New York Times reveals another characteristically terrible fact about modern life: your car secretly records fine-grained telemetry about your driving and sells it to data-brokers, who sell it to insurers, who use it as a pretext to gouge you on premiums:

@SpaceLifeForm @herrman_sk @Quantillion @TonyJWells @pluralistic Older vehicles are indeed lovely and tracking now seems ubiquitous and the data can be reused indefinitely and any rights contained within them can then be wiped upon the termination of the business that obtained them or they can re/de- psyeudonimised. With RaaS being a thing and the connections being there how long before a brand or model of car is held to ransom. The right to repair would enable older vehicles to be kept.

@SpaceLifeForm @herrman_sk @Quantillion @TonyJWells @pluralistic I like how the VW Santana was kept as a sought after car, 3 million where made in China, with some improvements but the same car. Means they will have parts to repair them for a long time, shame they never had them in Europe, I think they are quite beautiful. Hopefully the future will be a mix of retro custom cars and spaceships.

"Biden's brain is aging. Trump's brain is dementing.

'Phonemic paraphasias' —the substitution of non-words for words that sound similar—are not normally seen until a patient enters the moderate to severe stages of Alzheimer’s.

Some examples of Trump’s non-words: Beneficiaries becomes 'benefishes.' Renovations become 'renoversh.' Pivotal became 'pivobal.'"

@wdlindsy this website has an incredible amount of tracking with a lot of the 'partners' holding data for more than ten years, no idea if the content is factual, politically skewed or just data click bait.

david_preston ,
@david_preston@mastodon.social avatar

@wdlindsy that is true, I find the more tracking the less reliable the content as it is sued as bait to generate revenue from the tracking rather than produce actual information or content. Why the attitude?

I've never had a hero or a mentor but there's a huge raccoon on my street who's been stealing boots from backyards and then throwing them at people from high in her tree, and tbh she might be it

Zoom in at the base of the tree where there's a brown leather boot, a blue flip flop and an empty can of gingerale
