Well, I’ll be damned. Piece of shit turns out to be a piece of shit. Color me surprised!

I don’t have kids of my own, but through my time with my step-kids, I’ve learned I would’ve loved to have one or two. I totally understand people who don’t want kids. They can be a huge, expensive hassle. But I feel like I’ve gotten so much more back from them than it ever cost me. Plus they gave me this cup that I drink from every morning.

Being from FL, I’m a snob about FL oranges. Particularly navels and blood varieties. California oranges can fuck right off.

In case you’re not being sarcastic, this is about 2-footed drivers. They tend to always have their left foot “resting” on the brake pedal “just in case.” What they ignore is there’s a small amount of movement in the brake pedal that will light up the lights but not engage the brakes. So even if they’re not just wearing down the brakes, they look like they’re braking ALL. THE TIME.

I also hate this.

Can someone explain me USA obsession with prom and similar school rituals?

I just don't get it... Why is that important, especially for kids now, that feel like they need to do a YouTube video asking for a date or doing some meme stuff. Some teens even hire the hottest celebrity or ask them to appear in their prom? This is so bizarre for me, all that just for a frivolous night....

d00phy ,

You think prom is weird. Do an image search for Texas homecoming mums.

While many in the US have one or more gun, I would argue most were unaware of bump stocks until the 2017 Las Vegas Shooting. TL;DR, a bump stock uses the recoil of the rifle as a “spring” to help pull the trigger over and over again - effectively behaving like a “machine gun.” As already stated, it does not meet the US legal definition of a machine gun because you’re still firing one round per trigger pull. The bump stock basically makes the trigger pull automatic.

As for why it’s a big debate, read the wiki article. One guy killed A LOT of people pretty quickly using this device to greatly increase his rate of fire. It was a public eye opener for much of the country. So much so, that even Donald f’ing Trump came to the realization that something should be don. He didn’t even really get much push back on it from the right or the NRA. That’s how sobering the massacre was. That said, it happened long enough ago that it’s memory probably isn’t powerful enough for anyone to change the law to ban them and similar mechanisms (see: the binary trigger elsewhere in the comments). If they tried banning them today, the NRA and conservatives would fight it tooth and nail.

d00phy ,

It’s a simple dog whistle. He’s reminding everyone of the holocaust w/o saying the word.

d00phy ,

There’s a lot of depth to this reply, and it hits the nail on the head.

Seriously, as an emotional being, the guy is just empty. From his comment about not understanding why soldiers would go to war when they get nothing out of it, to his never ending willingness (eagerness, even) to toss literally anyone under the bus to save his own ass. This guy really has no earthly concept of sacrifice, honor, duty, community… seriously pull out a fucking thesaurus.

I think he is the single most self-centered person I’ve ever seen, heard of, or read about. I’m not even being hyperbolic. The greatest writers in history wouldn’t put a character like him to paper because readers wouldn’t buy it!

You say that’s how he understands friendship, and I agree. I’d only add that he genuinely thinks everyone else is just wrong about it. It’s kind of sad, and also kind of amazing to watch.

d00phy ,

I would only add that if someone calls out a specific behavior, really listen to them. Try to see their point of view. Often times, racism is about perspective, and it helps for both sides of that discussion to see and understand the other’s perspective. While their call out may just be a misunderstanding, it doesn’t lessen the hurt feelings and strong emotions that come with that.

A good example of this is the push for flat, or no, income tax; usually to being replaced by increased usage tax/sales tax/VAT. In the US, poor households tend to be minorities, and such a policy would disproportionately affect those people. Simply pushing for the policy isn’t necessarily racist. Not listening to economists who say the policy would disproportionately hurt minorities, would likely be seen by many as racist.

d00phy ,

How many are “outraged?” And are they so outraged as to consider not voting for him? If not, this story is meaningless.

d00phy ,

The military level should swap places with the one beneath it.

d00phy ,

Unless you include the “uh” in that quote I can’t hear Jeff Goldblum say it, and that’s a trigger I didn’t know it had. So, thanks?

d00phy ,

Usually trousers (really like the Eddie Bauer Ranier pants and shorts), golf shirt, grip6 belt, hiking boots and good socks. Bose QC35s if I’m in the data center. One customer makes me wear a safety vest. If I’m working weekends, in some data centers it’s warm enough for shorts (I’m not doing hardware installs).

If I’m working at home, whatever I slept in plus a shirt.

My wife was like this when we met. She also grew up more poor than me. I still see her washing a lot of stuff by hand that should be in the dishwasher. Old habits die hard. The unspoken agreement is when we run out of a utensil, or get down to one, we run the dishwasher.

One thing my mom taught her through me is not putting good kitchen knives or any wood through the dishwasher.

d00phy ,

I always remember a Garfield strip from when I was a kid that said this was recharging.

d00phy ,

I think this is the best answer. Think of it in terms of what would the boss (a good boss, that is) say? I can actually hear my managers say this. Many of the options here could be taken by the other person as you thinking you’re “better than” them. This is a fair and accurate response that doesn’t get personal.

I would say Chicago is maybe a better example. All around Chicago, you have a number of cities where a good majority of people living there commute into “the city.” All these places kind of run into one another to make a large metro area. Further out, there’s more space between towns, so they don’t seem like part of Chicago. Still a good number of people in those towns often work somewhere in the metro area.

I’ve always considered a “metro area” to include the immediate feeder communities that but up to one another and “the city” itself, and the “greater area” getting into the further out suburbs that are a little more spread out but feed into the metro area.

That assumes the it’s intended to be punishment. I would argue the goal of the laws, stated or not, is vengeance.

ETA: I’m not disagreeing with your statement. Just offering a modified viewpoint.

USA Lemmies: Where do you live?

I comment a lot on stories having to do with state governments and legislation or regions of the country. It got me wondering how many people I'm accidentally disparaging when I don't mean everyone in said state or region is terrible. So… Please be as specific or obtuse as your privacy filter requires. I'll start:...

    d00phy ,

You’ll find that folks can be gullible at any age. My step-kids, who live with their dad in Texas, are in their early 20s and get about 99% of their information from either YouTube or TikTok. For the youngest, church plays a big part. Generally speaking, they are good kids, but they are both gullible AF. I’m betting OP’s sibling has a similar diet of media consumption.

    d00phy ,

Adding to what others have said, Rogan often has, at best, a surface level understanding of the topics covered on his show. His guests often have an air of credibility because of their credentials, even when their views are often seen as outliers or plain wrong in their fields of expertise. Because Joe often doesn’t know enough to press them on questionable or disingenuous statements, his many many listeners are led to believe there’s something to the bullshit they’re hearing.

Huberman does something similar, but is worse because he often knows better.

    d00phy ,

I’m sure there’s something, and I try to remind myself when talking to the kids that they’re figuring out the world around them all the time just like i did when I was their age. It’s really hard getting them to look outside of YT and TikTok for information. Awhile back, the younger one got into the Atlantis mythology and started talking about it a lot. Theories of Atlantean origin are pretty common in white supremacist circles, so that was kind of stressful!

    d00phy ,

They should just privatize them like we did in the US. Worked out GREAT for us!

    /s if that wasn’t obvious.

    d00phy ,

… but “dirty,” so I guess it involves mud or something similar.

    d00phy ,

    Ooooooooooooooooh /s

    d00phy ,

One thing that keeps me in my echo chamber is people not coming to debate in good faith. I’m generally all for listening to me ideas and viewpoints, but I find that so many people I talk to just want to convince me I’m wrong.

She is going to the vet later. She hates getting picked up, but loves getting in containers. This is how I trick her.

But then, I got the carrier out too early, so she vacated and the fro had to see what was so cool.

I honestly don’t think Primer is meant to be understood. I think I read somewhere that their goal was not to make a cohesive storyline, but rather something that was open to interpretation.

    d00phy ,

I work around a lot of technical people. From software to devops, sys admins to hardware engineers, entry level to exec suite; and I have contacts around the world from my job. It’s a mixed bag as to which phone they all use, and it’s never had any effect on how I view their technical abilities. My personal phone is an iPhone, and my work one is a pixel 7 pro. It’s been that way for over a decade. There are things I like and dislike about both platforms. At the end of the day the “technical” things I do have little, if anything, to do with my phone.

Any personal judgement a stranger makes based on phone, OS, sportsball team, etc really only highlights their own childishness, need for something to lord over others, and propensity towards tribalism. I have no time for that BS.

No sideloading? Sure iOS and iPadOS are pretty locked down, but homebrew? Most of the apps on my Mac didn’t come from the App Store.

As for the price, sure they’re expensive, but they last! I have a 2006 mini still kicking around, a 2013 iMac still chugging along… neither still receive updates, but that doesn’t stop me from running some flavor of Linux on them for one reason or another. On that front, Apple has pissed me off a bit, though. The first Mac I used was a G4 that got software updates for right around 10-years. The mini I have got about the same. The iMac got 8 years, IIRC. That made me mad.

    d00phy ,

Been up about 45-min. Headed to the airport to go home.

    d00phy ,

As is “free market” and “conservative.”

    d00phy ,

If true, this would be Ohio Republicans hoisted on their own petard, right? I’ve always wanted to use that one, but it’s so hard to know when.
