TBH I'm surprised that they waited until 800 days into their 3-day invasion to do this. I'd have thought they would fabricate something before they invaded.

This would hold more water if they hadn't tried to assassinate him on countless occasions already (especially during the first few days of the war), but that tortured logic is about what I'd expect from them.

Hopes of Gaza ceasefire rise as Hamas delegation arrives in Cairo ( www.theguardian.com )

Egyptian and US mediators have reported signs of compromise in recent days and Egyptian state news channel Al-Qahera said on Saturday that a consensus had been reached in the indirect talks over many of the disputed points but gave no further details....

Something I'm struggling to understand: if people say Hamas does not represent Palestine, why are they the ones representing Gaza diplomatically? Shouldn't the UN or someone step in so that Gazans can decide who their government is first, before anybody can make decisions for them -- especially a group of deeply corrupt oligarchs based in a different country?

Let's say you're an organization (or foreign actor) who wants to get as many no-strings-attached dollars into Trump's hands as possible. You can't do that through campaign donations because those are watched way too closely. You can't just cut him a check, because that looks suspicious too. What you can do however is buy stock in the company he mostly owns, and inflate the stock price as much as you want.

Yup, a cop or wannabe cop. And the victim isn't even black, which is surprising...

I'd put Willie Nelson in there, in large part because a lot of country listeners are right-wing and completely oblivious.

Americans found it in their heart to have "plenty to share" to help Europe rebuild after the war even after being involved in the same war themselves. Most Europeans learned the moral lesson of that, but it seems you missed that memo.

I just wish it were possible to span a window across two of those "zones", like FanzyZones on Windows.

Reminder that these two are outliers, and most presidents have been roughly in their 50s: https://www.statista.com/chart/19665/age-of-us-presidents-at-inauguration/

That's weird, why is Passover relevant to this? I've been assured that these protests have nothing to do with antisemitism 🤔

Among highly skilled hackers, I wonder what percentage are either on the spectrum, furry, or LGBTQ (or some combination thereof). It's got to be at least 50%. Anyway, great work here!

I have a hard time accepting this as a crime. What if the illustration hand-drawn, or clothed but still sexual in character? Is caricature illegal, by this standard?

cygnus ,
@cygnus@lemmy.ca avatar

I can’t go around shooting photos of random people when they’re naked and then circulate them.

That's wildly different. It's like saying that writing about murder and actually committing it are the same thing.

Wow, those are very well preserved. I'm surprised they're leaving it open to the sky like that.

Who can blame them when the industry itself misrepresents its product, starting with the name.

cygnus ,
@cygnus@lemmy.ca avatar

You're technically correct, but these products are marketed as though they were like Star Trek's computer. Do you think it's a coincidence that Google Assistant's codename was "Project Majel"?

cygnus ,

I would gladly pay them each a million dollars per year if it meant we got a House full of outstanding MPs. These are the people running our country, FFS. Complaining about MP pay is incredibly shortsighted. What we need to focus on is removing barriers to running for Parliament so that we can get better candidates that better represent Canadians.

cygnus ,
@cygnus@lemmy.ca avatar

No, we really aren't. Not only do many highly qualified people make more than that, but the job also requires you to put your career (and pretty much your whole life and family) on hold. 200k is not that much when looked at more rationally (or comparing it to private sector jobs with similar requirements and high pressure) but we live in a land of crabs in a bucket eager to pull others down to the lowest level possible.

cygnus ,
@cygnus@lemmy.ca avatar

I am member of a party and I personally know several candidates. That's how I know how high the barriers are. As @psvrh said in another comment here, the system is set up in a way that makes it very difficult for anyone other than people who are effectively "retired", whatever their age. And then we have the gall to complain that most politicians are out of touch with the average Canadian? Of course they are! It's nearly impossible for the average person to run, let alone coordinate the requirements of the job if they manage to win. That's how we end up with weirdo oligarchs like JT and PP who are completely divorced from your or my reality — they're the only ones who are able to make it through the system as it's currently set up. Harping about their salary is irrelevant because they don't need it. They could be paid $0 and they would still want the job because all they care about is power and fame. Low-ish salaries only hurt the "middle-class" candidates — the accountants, professors, small business owners, etc.

cygnus ,
@cygnus@lemmy.ca avatar

You're so laughably off-base with this comment that I will no longer waste my time here. I'm not sure why you pulled a bunch of random insults and assumptions out of your ass rather than engage constructively.

ban it because it’s fucking awful for society.

Lots of things are awful for society — fast food, conservatism, detached housing. I agree that TikTok is generally detrimental to society but I think banning it is going too far, unless we can definitely established that it's being used by the CCP as a psyop.

The Great Compression: Thanks to soaring housing prices, the era of the 400-square-foot subdivision house is upon us ( www.nytimes.com )

Robert Lanter lives in a 600-square-foot house that can be traversed in five seconds and vacuumed from a single outlet. He doesn’t have a coffee table in the living room because it would obstruct the front door. When relatives come to visit, Mr. Lanter says jokingly, but only partly, they have to tour one at time....

cygnus ,
@cygnus@lemmy.ca avatar

This seems like the worst of both worlds — we still get massive suburban sprawl that prevents walkable cities and the density needed for good public transport, but without the perks of a larger house.

Possible to have different desktop folders for different workspaces?

I am a "messy desk" person and like to have a big open visual space for all the pseudo-temporary files belonging to whatever project I'm working on at a given time. It would be nice to have a workspace specifically dedicated for "work" and still be able to create a fresh one when needed, without having to "put all the work stuff...

They already switched into war time production, and if they manage to get Ukraine they only need a year or two to replenish all military equipment.

And who's going to do all the replenishing? Disabled former soldiers, the single moms the dead ones left behind, or the almost nonexistent men over 55? Oh, maybe they could liberate the prison population, half of which has AIDS.

Edit: not to mention their enormous deficit in power projection, assuming they could replenish their equipment and find people to operate it. They barely have a navy, have essentially lost access to the Baltic, and other than Belarus have no allies who would let them use their territory for staging.
