There is a really crazy paper where they did the "mirror dot" test for self recognition on ants. BUT. It's in the "Journal of Science" which isn't "Science" ... and it's odd to have an insect paper not in an insect journal.

And this is their webpage:

https://www.journalofscience.net

Listen I just want this paper to be real, but it's kind of out there and the journal IDK.

cshlan ,
@cshlan@dawdling.net avatar

@futurebird
I feel like it's difficult to separate self awareness from understanding mirrors in this test. Our dog, seeing herself in the mirror, has run down the hall checking every room "behind" the mirror. I suppose to find "the other side". She understands windows but not reflections. She'll ask to go outside at night when I'm reflected in the door while sitting at my desk then turn around wanting back in immediately when I'm not outside. How does any of that comment on self awareness?

“they are attacking the ten commandments”
Listen I know this is hard to relate to if you live in a place where everyone isn’t going to the same 8 different Christian churches in a town with a population of less than 80,000 but this is what the little town where my mom grew up in PA was like. Churches are the social fabric— a “different religion” means someone is Catholic or goes to one of the three Black churches.

This commandments in the schools thing is supposed to stirred up an old wound.

cshlan ,
@cshlan@dawdling.net avatar

@futurebird
My parents used to go to one that actually did. Their pastor had other issues as far as I was concerned but the church as a whole did great outreach and provided a thriving community for its members. It had grown up from a much smaller church over the decades they lived nearby.

My experience with other mega churches doesn't live up to that one, though. They focus more on the leadership's message than building community.

You have to carefully read this Axios piece -- on the rise of "partisan-backed outlets designed to look like impartial news outlets" -- to learn what should have been shouted right at the top: The overwhelming majority of these "pink slime" sites are engineered by right-wingers.

Zoe has been making some important content about PragerU's effort to creep into public schools. Her main point is an important one: It's not just that this content comes from an extremist right wing group with extreme views: it's also just not very good. It's all videos and multiple choice questions-- none of it very thoughtful.

But what would you expect? These people don't really like education or think it's important.

  • Growing corn?

    Any tips on growing corn in central Texas? Is it even practical? I sowed some corn in February, and they only grew 3ft. and looks like I might have a few very small corn cobs. The last time I tried to grow corn was in Ohio, and used the 3 sisters method, which worked pretty well. But idk wtf to do in central Texas.

    Why do all these solemn newsmen keep insisting that Trump said it’s fine for states to monitor all pregnant people because he “doesn’t think much about the issue” like —they see what a fantastically bad take it is and make excuses for him! Why? “he’s not really that authoritarian- he just hasn’t thought it through” Who cares?

    Why try to be a Trump whisper and decode the erratic catchphrase-driven slam poetry?

    My husband is not the computer person. He has an old microsoft surface and a desktop PC.

    Today his mouse stopped working. And...

    Well the dongle for the mouse was plugged into the surface but somehow this let it work with both? (is that a thing?)

    But the surface just quietly died at long last so his mouse stopped working on the desktop. So he moved the dongle to the desktop and now its working.

    Could we design a skyscraper & sewer system with the intent of creating ecological niches all through the building? Some of the work with green roofs touches on this... can your building handle rain like a forest, not produce fast run-off? Maybe even act as a water sink for less well designed nearby areas. You collect the runoff and get all the moss and plants your parking garage neighbor can't be bothered with.

    Which of the following did you feel most often growing up? If you were "an almost only child" eg you had siblings but they were much older or younger... or you had siblings but didn't grow up with them most of the time answer as if you were an only kid.

    I have three sisters and the oldest of them is two years younger than I am so I don't remember not having siblings. We fought a lot and they pestered me a lot and we stood up for each other a lot (mostly me because I was a lot bigger). We're not really close anymore, I've lived away for too long. But we still have a good relationship and enjoy seeing each other when we do.

    Parthenogenesis Confirmed in Dorymyrmex Bureni!?

    Their queen died due to a tragic accident. That was weeks ago. They have since produced queen alates and many eggs. The queen alates are offspring of the dead queen. But the new eggs laid by either the workers or the new queens have matured and you know what I’m NOT seeing? Male alates! That means that either the workers or the new queens have managed to produce female workers! An ant miracle… though not unheard of. Just not in this genus!

    Gold ring with quartz intaglio depicting an ant. Roman, 1st-2nd century AD

    I wonder who wore this ring. Why did they choose an ant as their symbol? It's interesting to me that the depiction is specific enough that it can't be written off as a general "bug" the mandibles, and body plan make this explicitly an ant.

    Very disappointed to see that TA&MU is recommending "treating" Dorymyrmex bureni ant colonies. These ants love to attack and eat invasive fire ant queens and do not infest human dwellings. They are not pest ants, but one of the most valuable & charming native species. I wonder what other beneficial native insects are also on the kill list of the Agricultural & Life Sciences website! Apparently in Poland when they have legal court everyone wears robes: different colors for attorneys and the judge etc.

    Of course in the UK judges still wear wigs which US judges are free to wear too, but simply don't.

    On the US Supreme court it's just black robes-- Clarence Thomas, Antonin Scalia, and Stephen Breyer have all tried to make skull caps happen but no one else cared.
