Yeah, one of the biggest selling brands is hopeless for this. I have to colour the base of each one.

It's like the company wants the marker to dry out and for me to go buy more.

If so, you can ID birds by their calls with the whoBIRD app (GPLv3)

At the 41:00 min mark, the idea of setting up a kids police-force, in the theme-park, to arrest other kids has the obvious outcome, planting evidence and abuse of power.

It's a re-play of the discouraged 1968 "Blue eyes/Brown eyes" discrimination exercise.

It is usually dangerous to deputise children against eachother, and can quickly devolve into a Lord of the Flies scenario.

A quality in-depth video into 'Kid Cities'.

A video where someone puts carpet on a car in the bike-lane. Can you identify this video?

I actually want to see this video now, after replying to the thread.

Best way of playing Wipeout these days?

So...after watching latest Noclip video, I was having a bit of a Wipeout itch...I have a rather decent gaming computer, but I was wondering what would be the best way to play the wipeout series...was 2097 the best one? Is there a good way to get it running at decent resolution/effects these days?...

It looks super smooth and clean.

I find that the Dutch directness is a perfect fit for these types of game reviews. eg.

My main electronic music growing up was Hard-Trance and then DnB, but we had a friend who DJed House/Big Beat and he would drop this feelgood banger that would get us smiling.

Lost the name of it for about 7 years before someone knew what I was talking about, then I forgot the name for about another 10 years before getting it again.

Will never forget it now.

What are some free interests/things/hobbies you can do in the city?

I live alone and I'm just wasting away my time here. It's actually making me very depressed to be honest. I do live in the city which makes think there ought to be at least something to do out here. Though I can't really afford to spent money on it every day....

ace_garp ,
@ace_garp@lemmy.world avatar

Search for

Boardgame club (insert your city name here)

Usually you'll have a handful to choose from.

The ones in our city are:

$5 entry

Last for 10hrs

Go with friends or go alone and meet people on the day who want to play a boardgame

Mostly friendly/helpful people who want to teach and enjoy games with others

Choose your level of social interaction (no one will bat an eye if you only talk to play the game, and make no side chit-chat)

Fun everytime

Which movies have aged like fine wine? (either in their message or cinematography)

I recently saw 'Don't Look Now' (1973). Good picture, a little slow perhaps by today's standards but worthy of any movie enjoyer's time! So this movie was shot in Venice. Venice itself being an already beautiful spot to film even today. The way we get to look in a time capsule of Venice in the 70s makes the movie that much...

ace_garp ,
@ace_garp@lemmy.world avatar

The original Blade Runner(1982)

That sparse and bleak mood will never age. Poses excellent dilemas and moral questions about cyborgs too.

Also Citizen Kane. I watched it a couple of years ago because of it's position in film history. Yes, it is that good of a masterpiece.

They are chill when you drive past them.

They can be a hazard for vehicles if in an accident, because of their size. Think moose size.

The main feralness is that they can smell water, and will head to water-mills to get a drink. They destroy water tanks and pipes to get access.
Can't blame them, the outback is hot.

Also can outgraze native animals for grasses and shrubs.

Water-mills look like this:

This article covers some recommended router hardware for dd-wrt.

Agree with plenty of the ones mentioned here, like: Stephenson, Egan and Murakami.

A very observant author is Peter Carey.

His wonderful book, Bliss was written in 1981 and felt like someone in 2010 looking back at the debauched mid 80s. Amazing foresight.

Who is doing the most good in the world, and how? ( kbin.social )

My feed is filled with bad news, which is my fault for using the fediverse as a news feed, but it made me wonder: Which organisations, groups or individual people in the world are doing the most good for our world? Herorats who are rats, that are trained to sniff out and locate landmines and tuberculosis.

Apparently there are only 200 of them, could use a whole lot more around the world.

ace_garp ,
@ace_garp@lemmy.world avatar

I think there are landmine Herorats and TB Herorats, that have seperate jobs.

I'm pretty sure I heard of Golden Retrievers being used to sniff out TB also.

Any animal with a sufficiently capable sense of smell could probably be used. Rats are lighter weight for use around landmines, and generally cheaper to feed than dogs.
