‘What if there just is no solution?’ How we are all in denial about the climate crisis ( www.theguardian.com )

For denial doesn’t only amount to rejecting the evidence, he argues – it also consists of denying our role in the climate crisis; absolving ourselves through “carbon offsets, hybrid cars, local purchases, recycling”. And in this, far more of us are implicated....

Australian bushfires could be more intense and extensive than current predictions by the IPCC study suggests ( www.abc.net.au )

Central to their concerns are how the IPCC predictions rely on a tool called the Forest Fire Danger Index (FFDI), which does not capture the full potential of future fires in drought and heatwave conditions....

What does the world think of India?

I am an Indian and I have noticed that Indians are way too proud of their country for some reason and at the same time lack any civic sense towards it, they are extremely loud and extremely proud. We feel like the world revolves around India and our culture is superior to that of others. Also, a considerable chunk of the...

Narendra Modi is a twat.

Dude should be in jail but he's the PM ? Nuff said.

https://www.theguardian.com/books/article/2024/jun/15/the-architecture-of-modern-empire-arundhati-roy-review

Of Modi, who was chief minister of Gujarat in 2002 when more than 1,000 Muslims were slaughtered in an inter-communal riot, she observes: “The courts, the press, the parliament are not functioning as checks and balances. If they were, he would be in jail today.”

Just don't use so many tabs" is not an answer.

Yes it is. If somone is holding a knife upside down and complaining it doesn't cut their steak, are you rude and ignore them? or comment that they're doing it wrong? OP has the knife upside down.

FF (or any browser AFAIK) is not designed to do this , OP is doing it wrong is a valid answer.

On the flip side OP wants FF to change so it can do what they want, which is also valid. After all, a sensible person adapts to the environment around them, an insane person expects the environment to adapt to them, therefore all progess is made by insane people. Have at it OP :)

Florida Governor DeSantis rejects climate change rationale for record-breaking rain ( wapo.st )

At this point, it's fairly common for significant rainfall events to have attribution studies showing that they're a result of the higher temperatures that fossil fuel burning has given us. Whether or not we end up with one for this particular event, it's something that we know will be more common if we keep on extracting and...

I saw a great video if his somone has ripped from Tik Tok about housing, dude actually gives a shit about housing, explains the complete bullshit of Labor Housing policy and how it's really just money in the pocket for developers.

Let's hope he manages to hang about and doesn't end up like Carolyn Lucas in the UK and leave becase of the toxicity, or worse still, become one of the innumberable asshats in Parliament.

Also gives me more appreciation for the shit Bandt must have had to put up with when he was there on his Pat Malone.

I don't work I quit work at 35 and am now 58. It takes time Toni shacke from the societal indoctrination Misha bleeding work as worthy. I live off a small investment income from investments made decades past (I was buying shares from age 19 and have always been frugal growing up poor, I also own my own modest cottage in a small rural village) Those investments have only grown through no particular perspicacity of mine.

Eventually you can come to understand that freedom is and do what you want. My only regret ? Not quitting earlier, those years were wasted and I can't get them back.

No.. In my defence...

“Nice people made the best Nazis. My mom grew up next to them. They got along, refused to make waves, looked the other way when things got ugly and focused on happier things than “politics.” They were lovely people who turned their heads as their neighbors were dragged away. You know who weren’t nice people? Resisters.”– Naomi Shulman

I can speak for the OP but schadenfreude ia a thing, that aside speaking for mysel, I'm certinaly indifferent as I would be if a drunk driver crashed and complained about the car repairs, the inconvenience of not having a vehicle and the sore ribs. You were fucking drunk driving you shitty human being!

I'm also mindful of Karl Poppers "Tolerance of Intolerance," if you tolerate these shit stains, you end up with civilisations collapse and an unlivable world. So while not agreeing with the person you responded to I can certinaly understand it. Theyre doing very real damage to other humans; women, minorities etc and intent on destroying the biosphere. They are literally and proudly the bad guys.

To have any chnave we have to engage in demand destruction. There are NO solutions involving growing the economy, we'll fuck around trying though and make it much worse

It doesnt have to mean a shitty life, it does.mean a differnt life eg no car and cycle and PT means no car costs, denser quieter cities, large houses banned, small really well insulated homes only, less deaths from car polluton etc. We need to ban flying, close airports etc

All we're doing now is greenwashed nonsense and blah blah blah. At mimum we should be building no more roads and only funding e trains and e bus lanes etc

We've barley started with planned withdrawal from coast lines.

We either crash the economy (preferably equitably) or we collapse civilisation, were out of choices, we have left it to long. Neither the ALP nor the LNO are up to the task but that's on voters supporting those assholes.

No, noting about our system is to be admired.

You have socalised mortgages through Fannie and Freddie and can budget knowing rates will be locked for decades because that's how they operate your banks have to do the same.

We have shitty WAY overpriced housing, some of the most expensive in the world in a small country (gazillons of acres but not many people) at the bottom of the planet ffs, we have poorly built housing stock with poor building codes (thin walls and slap giant HVACS on the side with no though to effiency) and cost a fortune to run

We only have privates mortgages with nearly all floating rates, we have a mostly protected cartel of lenders, the so called Big 4.

All our mortgages are full recourse, banks can persue you in perpetuity if u get I to trouble.

And 100s of other terrible things..

No but that's not a defence for her entitlement. Did she say "look,I totally despise what Russia ia doing in Ukrainians and how its undermining other countires and I don't supoort that".. No, not once did she say that.. Fuck her. I'll save my empathy for the folks slaughtered in Bucha.

A lot of people wrongly though that.

Mostly the rhetoric I heard in personal conversations was conservative talking points about blaming The Greens for not allowing enough back burning and blame The Greens for not allowing nuclear.

Insee some if the same.stuoid nonses spouted in the Canadian less by conservative polticans there.

The Greens have never been in power at the state or federal level and can't draft legislation. The conservative LNP have been in power literally for decades and drafted all the legislation but here we are.

I am sure we won't get out of this.

You're in good company with that line of thinking

https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg22329820-200-understand-faulty-thinking-to-tackle-climate-change/

DANIEL KAHNEMAN is not hopeful. “I am very sorry,” he told me, “but I am deeply pessimistic. I really see no path to success on climate change.”

Kahneman’s views are widely shared by cognitive psychologists. As Daniel Gilbert of Harvard University says: “A psychologist could barely dream up a better scenario for paralysis.”

Thay said, I keep my emisisons low, vote green, but plan for the worst while hoping for the best.

We're decades behind on this because of the intragience of voters reelecting the same sorts of polticans. I am not sure we have time to come back from the brink but one things for sure, neither the ALP nor the LNP are at all interested in anything but pushing us over the edge
