He probably means one of these (or both):

  1. New York Times is a huge corporation. The commenter would only support a site which is run by one creator, or with a genuine small team, which is transparent and not an asshole.

  2. New York Times is biased politically or accepting bribery attempts from other corpos to make them look in a better light.

Idk anything about Kbin nowadays, but could this outage really be related to homophobia?

If for some reason, the owner of Kbin.social's protest against Pride month is shutting down the servers, then what purpose does this protest even fulfill? They can only lose users by not having a reliable 24/7 service providing.

I don't think so that this is the reason for the outage, but please convince me, if you have some proof or fair logic in this topic.

Hungarian here. There reason for being the top 1 was because the country was running on debt hell for 10-15 years.

Kádár (the ruler of that time) had promised from 1956 that he will improve the living standards. This worked until the 70s, when the oil crisis happened and Kádár realized that with those current living conditions, the country needs to get loans. So he did that until communism have ended.

JUST TODAY I was going to buy WinRar. I've used the software forever, for free, and I just thought... I appreciate this, they've never given me grief, and I'm going to pay them.

And I went on their page to subscribe for a lifetime membership, and they wanted 20 bucks, which I was okay with, but it does not include Major Updates! I guess I'll buy it and just click the do not check for updates button but that seemed kind of, I don't know....

Literally this for me. Also a lot of times I can get into a focus state with a problem for some hours, and with that time passes fast, compared to just doing nothing and faking being busy.

What non-FOSS software have you been unable to quit?

For me, Google video search, Google books (Internet Archive is good, but doesn't always have the same stuff), Adobe InDesign (but in the process of learning LaTeX), and Typewise. As for the Google stuff, I liked Whoogle a lot, but almost all their instances seem to have been blocked or shut down. Also, apologies if this is...

Unfortunately OSM won't be able to compete with user reviews for example (except if we steal those from Google). Also a bunch of shops can't be seen there, which is crucial for me to discover cheap restaurants.

But OSM's bike routes are 10/10.

Hey mates, recently I've developed a tool to use the GenerativeAI on the AI Horde to created random avatars and banners on lemmy. To keep things spicy, I wanted to deploy to rotate the /c/piracy banner daily, as I've done in a bunch of other communities like !stable_diffusion_art and the lemmy.dbzer0.com....

Hello! The idea is phenomenal, although I feel that some or most of the genAI images look uncanny usually. I would honestly prefer human made arts, but those could be really costly, so that's totally understandable. I'm impartial on this decision tho, do anything you like! ^^

Also we can lengthen the rotation process tho. A weekly or monthly change would be plenty sufficient, but it's just a small preference.

My philosophy is to just focus on 1 or few communities, instead of having a bunch of communities which will lack (more) content, but I hope it works out for you. Well gametheorists has grabbed my attention ngl. ^^

The ability to see all the communities if you search them up without having to find it via lemmyverse.net and inserting the specific fedi url to the search bar. It's a crucial thing for an average Joe, no matter it's due to how the fedi protocol works.

Yeah and it's kinda hard to get off from that. I'm in the process of switching my 2 gmail accounts to 2 proton ones and it seems that the ProtonMail app's free plan doesn't support multiple emails. Understandable but sad.
