Mattermost runs as a Docker container and is excellent. You can create channels and groups which is incredibly useful.

I've been trying to, and it would be easy enough with individual users having an @gmail account. My situation is ten people on a custom domain (anyone remember "Google apps for your domain"?) and that is particularly difficult to extricate from!

What is something you can’t live without, technology wise that saves you time?

I have to say it’s my virtual assistant I’ve made. It saves me a lot of time with making reminders and such alarms for meetings or interviews, music etc.

Yes, Waze is amazing! Works really hard well, especially when there's unusual traffic. Love it.

You're not crazy.

Think of Alfred Nobel: inventor of dynamite and exasperated that it was used for evil, not just for good. Founded the Nobel Peace Prize to make amends.

How do you build complex shapes? ( i.imgur.com )

I've made a large number of custom prints, and all of them were created using TinkerCad. It's an amazing toolkit, stupid easy to use but versatile. That is ... until something needs a tiny adjustment somewhere. That's when I feel it would've been neat to use parametric CAD instead....

Lofts and sweeps and pockets FTW! That does look like the right solution for single objects.

What about objects that sit at an angle relative to each other? Can you define workplanes (sketches) at arbitrary angles? Can you later slide those planes up/down, e.g. to add more distance from the face it would sit on? For instance, in the above object, the holders on the blue face are tilted 14 degrees from the blue base, and the little red holder in front is tilted an additional 5 degrees and lifted 6mm from the front of the larger red holder.

I'm in Europe and I have never in my life seen a gas station that dispenses every fuel through just one hose.

Every fuel has its own hose and "pistol". Each "pump" has two or three or four hoses.

The fucked up thing about plain money is that even if you have a million today, that million will be worth less than half when you retire, due to inflation and nrtions that keep printing more money to cover their expenses.

I think you read that the wrong way 'round. It makes sense to me, in the context of being against the stupid Russians.

PlutoniumAcid ,
@PlutoniumAcid@lemmy.world avatar

Because Russia deliberately attack the power plant, that is an attack on the world. It seems to me that you read it as if Ukraine did this attack?

PlutoniumAcid ,
@PlutoniumAcid@lemmy.world avatar

It's simple. Ukraine is fighting to get their home land back. They are smart and will not destroy the power plant. This is undeniable fact.

On the other hand, Russia is driven by a power hungry maniac, and they have shelled the plant before. They also had their troops dig trenches in the irradiated soil - poor sods will all die from cancer, if not from acute lead poisoning. This is also undeniable fact.

If we agree on this, let's have a discussion. If not, I will consider you an unusually eloquent but still Russian troll and block you for wasting my time.

What I want to know is how they started building that? How did they put the first stones? With a helicopter??

Man, I feel you. I hate Mattermost for its utter inability to run on anything else than port 8065 specifically.

  • Outlook (tasks, inbox, and calendar) on the left screen (sometimes vertical)
  • Main work window on the right screen.
  • Underneath is my laptop screen with Teams and Notepad++.

Remove 1 screen = reduce my productivity by maybe 20%.

Remove one more screen = reduce by at least another 40%.

"Excellence is not an act, but a habit" - Aristotle teaching that good comes from the whole, not from a single step. Focus on the whole, and the steps will follow.

"So, what's the next action for this?" - the GTD approach to task management teaching me to be specific and then go do it (or plan it, or delegate it). This really kicks me into productivity mode.

This issue doesn't happen very often, maybe every few weeks. That's why I think a nightly reboot is overkill, and weekly might be missing the mark? But you are right in any case: regardless of what the cron says, the machine might never get around to executing it.

PlutoniumAcid OP ,
@PlutoniumAcid@lemmy.world avatar

Nope, haven't. It says I have 2 GB of swap on a 16 GB RAM system, and that seems reasonable.

Why would you recommend turning swap off?

Thank you for these ideas, I will read up on systat+sar and give it a go.

Also smart to have the script always running, sleeping, rather than launching it at intervals.

I know all of this is a poor hack, and I must address the cause - but so far I have no clues what's causing it. I'm running a bunch of Docker containers so it is very likely one of them painting itself into a corner, but after a reboot there's nothing to see, so I am now starting with logging the top process. Your ideas might work better.

PlutoniumAcid OP ,
@PlutoniumAcid@lemmy.world avatar

You know you are right, and I've tried. I can manually monitor but it doesn't happen just then. I don't know yet what causes it, I can only assume it's one of the Docker containers because the machine is doing nothing else.

I am doing this to find out how often it happens, how quickly it happens, and what's at the top when it happens.

PlutoniumAcid OP ,
@PlutoniumAcid@lemmy.world avatar

That's a good idea, didn't know Docker had such capability. I will read up on that - could you give me some keywords to start on?

Appreciation / shock at workplace IT systems

After self hosting several services for a few users, with SSO, backups, hardware issues etc, I really appreciate how good the IT was in my old company. What is a gender neutral replacement for man, guys, buddy, etc?

So I've realized that in conversations I'll use traditional terms for men as general terms for all genders, both singularly and for groups. I always mean it well, but I've been thinking that it's not as inclusive to women/trans people....

Brother ADS-1700W is amazing!

  • no PC or USB required: place it anywhere
  • WiFi
  • scans a page double-sided to PDF in two seconds!
  • sends file to network share, ready to be consumed by Paperless
  • fully automatic, no button presses needed!
  • tiny footprint
  • document feeder
  • use with separator pages to bulk-scan many documents in one go

How to remotely reboot a Linux host if SSH fails to connect?

Edit2: Thanks all for your responses! I have checked the logs, https://lemmy.nz/comment/6192604, and based on that removed tracker-miner-fs as it's a search/index tool which I don't need. No idea why it took over all memory. I'll also get a WiFi Smartplug as a kill switch. Hopefully that solves it....
