Thanks to the popularity of alt text I have a question. I'm blind, and even when I had a spec of vision I couldn't see colour. What's the value in black&white photography? It seems to me that if you can have colour, why wouldn't you?

@ChristineMalec sometimes an object has beautiful contours that are clearer in black and white than in color. Black and white also simplifies an image, which can increase its immediate impact. Older folks may also feel a sense of nostalgia looking at a black and white photograph.

My dad wouldn’t accept a cab ride from a consultant.

I returned a fruit basket from a vendor we were already doing business with.

People CAN have scruples. How about a fucking Supreme Court justice can’t accept ANY gift, including those that are de minimis?!?

The bald eagle could have easily gone extinct. But we did all sorts of "woke" things protecting it legally, ran conservation and study programs, banned DDT (that was good for other reasons too) and in 2007 they were removed from the endangered species list.

Likewise pine forests could be dead from acid rain.

The ozone could have a huge hole.

We CAN take care of nature when we want to. And the successes have been worth it.

I feel like we forget this, you know?

@futurebird yes! I had a conversation the other day with someone about what exactly might be included in the term “animals.” My answer is anything in the kingdom of Animalia. This includes humans… and a whole lot of creatures we apparently don’t think much of since we spay lethal chemicals on them. We have killed so many insects that pollination is a problem now. Bees aren’t the only pollinators! And bird numbers are falling precipitously, too.

Justice says his wife Martha-Ann Alito had an altercation with neighbors about a "'Fuck Trump' sign that was within 50 feet of where children await the school bus in Jan 21."

Except... FCPS and ACPS were all remote in January of 2021. No children were waiting for buses

@GottaLaff I have never seen a F*&% Trump sign but I have seen dozens or hundreds that say F*&% Biden. Never saw a Democrat disrespectful of the flag, but I’ve seen dozens of wind-tattered flags on jacked up MAGA pickup trucks.

"[Trump's] inability to read was part of a set of childhood behaviors including impulse control and attention that today would very likely have been identified as a ADHD learning disability, and treated. As an adult he has turned relative illiteracy into a selling point for a crowd of Americans who have decided that democracy means ignorance is as good as knowledge.

I noticed another article scolding “doomers” for doing it wrong. It says we shouldn’t make people sad or angry about what capitalist industry is doing to our climate and environment. The article claims a better approach is to give people hope, and emphasize positive steps they can take like planting a tree or riding a bike.

Well, sure, those things are good, and I encourage them. But even if everyone who reads this post or sees that article stops driving a car in favor of bike riding and also cheerfully begins planting trees, that still will not make any significant difference in altering the trajectory of climate breakdown.

The problem we face is much bigger than your carbon footprint or mine. And whether you feel happy or sad after reading this, that certainly will not affect the motivation of the oligarchs who own our society. Their only concern is to make more money and gain more power.

Of course you and I should take appropriate individual actions (drive less, fly less, buy less, etc.), but we also should recognize that while those actions are important, they are not sufficient. Because what we need is system change.

That will not be easy, but it’s essential.

To get a comprehensive level of system change — which is the only kind that offers any true hope of avoiding complete disaster — we must remove all those currently in power, including the billionaires who control the politicians, and replace the current system with a different one.

We must end capitalism and commence degrowth.

Yes, this is a big ask. But we're talking about life or death here, literally. So it's a bold choice we must make.

@breadandcircuses the same billionaires and politicians who insist isn’t real are the same ones who want to keep women, LGBTQ, and POC down. We need to unite forces.

Don't use "crawled out from under a rock" as an insult. Most of the things that live under rocks are much nicer than the people who get accused of being like them.

Heather Cox Richardson's account this morning of how Trump and the party he owns, the Republicans, ended up in the lap of the murderous Putin is a must-read.

"In exchange for weakening NATO, undermining the U.S. stance in favor of Ukraine in its attempt to throw off the Russians who had invaded in 2014, and removing U.S. sanctions from Russian entities, Russian operatives were willing to help Trump win the White House."
