Still figuring out Mastodon. My work is on environmental justice and Pan-Africanism. My life is about jiu jitsu, art, skateboarding, and music. Recent chapter: "The Comparative Politics of Environmental Justice" (Oxford Handbook of Comparative Environmental Politics: Oxford U., 2021)

Please note: I will post thirst traps, and I do occasionally re-boost swork content, so if that bothers you, you might want to turn off boosts from this account

Kaepernick: "The cops should maybe not kill Black people all the time."

NFL & fans: "That dirty ni-, that dirty thug should shut his mouth and leave politics out of sports."

Butker: "Broads should stay in the kitchen, and while I'm at it, let me tell you about 'diversity,' if you know what I mean, ha ha."

NFL & fans: "Yes gigachad, speak your truth, we value all opinions here."

I have a random ant that's been in my office for weeks now. I tried to put her outside, but she keeps coming back in. I hope she's ok! Should I be worried about her? I guess she's getting enough food? @futurebird

Well, now I'm sad. I'll get some treats for the ant then. Let it go out in luxury.

An incomplete list of inappropriate comments I received from my male colleagues recently:

  • You look furious.
  • You have a quiet voice. A woman from Ukraine in our department also has a quiet voice.
  • You look nervous.
  • You gave me an angry look at the elevator and I didn't dare to discuss a project with you.
  • You are so modest.
  • You don't have to get so confrontational.

They reduce our professional interactions to an imaginary emotional state of mine.

Do men talk like this to each other?

KFuentesGeorge ,
@KFuentesGeorge@universeodon.com avatar

@TatianaIlyina

They do if you're Black. Speaking from experience.

KFuentesGeorge ,

@TatianaIlyina

I imagine it all depends on how our identity threatens White patriarchy. You've spelled out pretty well how the comments you've gotten all have to do with their expectations of how you're supposed to perform your gender.

In my case, they tend to be racialized. E.g, I'm engaging in "identity politics," I'm an "activist," while they're "empirical." I'm "militant." Once I was praised as an "outlier" because I was seen as more intelligent than the average Black person (really). White men (and White women) speak to me like this. So it's related to what happens to you in that we're policed by White patriarchy, but also qualitatively different, in that you get the patriarchy from all races, and I get the racism from all genders.

Not sure if you have tenure yet, but if you do, man, that takes a huge friggin load off. It doesn't stop the bullshit, but it makes it slightly less materially threatening.

Important reporting on the members of a violent and unaccountable paramilitary gang with a history of white supremacist violence, and who also joined the Oath Keepers.

I don't mean to be all controversial and extreme, but I feel like telling paramedics that they have safe passage to pick up injured children, and then tracking them so you can kill them and everyone else in sight is not really a good thing to do.

Good thing murdering children and aid workers isn't* a violation of international law!

The cone ants have reached a depth of 25cm in their “excavation enrichment activity” (it’s a tube full of sand to satisfy their fiendish need to dig. ) In the wild their nest can be meters deep, but given the ideal nature of their current nest the digging which only a few 100 ants bother with is more of a diversion than urgently building a nest. I can inject water into the tube with a hypodermic needle. This makes them dig a little deeper? Have not figured that one out yet.

I got a problem! I found sugar ants in my beehive. It's now too cold to open up and scour the hive (I can do this on Tuesday). What do you know about ants and bees? Will the bees be able to fight the ants off???

I just read a review of a children's book written in 1911 (the review is from 1913) and the person reviewing the book totally missed the point of the story. The whole thing went right over the reviewer's head.

Tempted to write the latest, least expected bad book review clap-back in the history of humankind.

Reminder: 10 years ago, actual Jewish survivors of the actual literal Holocaust specifically referred to Israel's policies in Palestine as an "ongoing genocide." In case anybody tries to gaslight you that calling it that is somehow anti-Semitic or insulting to Holocaust survivors.

I keep seeing these discussions in left circles about how terrible social media is. It angers & frustrates me that Mastodon & the Fediverse don't even merit a mention.

"The Majority Report" goes as far as dissing Threads but never mentions the fedi.

There are only 170 comments. Why not leave a comment asking why "the left" keeps complaining (rightly) about corporate social media but ignoring the alternative?

From my bitter personal experience, there is a sizable group of Moderate and Civil White People™ who are completely incapable of recognizing that someone is racist, unless they're doing something like throwing up a Sieg Heil with one hand, a white power symbol with the other, while wearing a Klan robe with a Nazi armband, and saying something like: "man, I sure do love me some segregation!"

it's part of what Tuck and Yang call "moves to innocence," and is essential in maintaining structural white supremacy.

    Have you ever had an uncanny or possibly paranormal experience?

    I have.

    It happened when I was in undergrad, I had a work-study in the Archivists Office in the rare books section of the library. The library is a classic modern building from the 50s, once ahead of its time, now well behind. The computer system was similar, my college being one of the first to adopt a digital library catalog in the late 60s

    So, as you can see, this is, in part, a story of a haunted computer terminal. 1/

    1. say, "huh."
    2. say, "stupid goddamn acorn."
    3. immediately do a dive and barrel roll, and empty your clip at a handcuffed person in the back seat.

    If you answer #3, congratulations! You are law enforcement material!
