#CeasefireNow
NYT—Prime Minister Benjamin #Netanyahu of Israel threw up a hurdle on Saturday to President #Biden’s declaration a day earlier that it was “time for this war to end,” reiterating that #Israel would not agree to a permanent cease-fire in #Gaza before the destruction of #Hamas’s military and governing capabilities.
There's a new #ceasefire proposal on the table, and yet Mastodon is awfully quiet about it. This is even more strange given how widely the last #hamas proposal was received.
In the proposal, #israel moves again quite a lot. Partial withdrawal of #IDF before any #hostages are released.
Given the nonexistent reception, my impression that quite a few folks here care less about lives in #gaza and more about hating on "the west" hardens.
I want peace in the Middle East, and Israel has offered a new peace treaty that is backed by many countries, including Middle East countries, as well as the US.
Will Hamas accept this peace treaty?
Will they abide by the peace treaty?
And will those who cry "Ceasefire Now", promote this treaty?
NYT—Breaking News: President #Biden said that #Hamas was no longer capable of carrying out a major terrorist attack on #Israel and declared that it was time for a permanent cease-fire in #Gaza. “It’s time for this war to end,” he said.
This article in Al-Sharq Al-Awsat documents the massive destruction caused by the recent Israeli military operation in the #Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza Strip. It describes how entire residential blocks, medical centers, #UN aid facilities, and water wells were demolished, leaving the camp in ruins.
Testimonies from returning residents like Umm Fadi (أم فادي) and Munir al-Masri (منير المصري) recount how their homes and neighborhoods were completely leveled. They accuse Israel of taking revenge on Jabalia, which has been a center of resistance.
[…] "My son and grandson were martyred during the first incursion into the camp, and now in this new incursion they destroyed our home, and destroyed all the homes of our neighbors. Even the schools were burned and large parts of them were demolished. What happened is they destroyed everything. They completely erased the camp."
[…] "The operation is clear. Its objective and results are clear. They destroyed our homes, water wells, medical clinics and schools - not #Hamas and its capabilities. The occupation even burned down and destroyed #UNRWA headquarters, leaving nothing of it remaining."
Israel claims the operation targeted Hamas' efforts to regroup in the camp. However, residents say Israel destroyed civilian infrastructure like markets and bakeries rather than just Hamas capabilities. But its actions show intent to erase signs of life in Jabalia. One merchant says shops and stalls were deliberately burned down, and another woman says Israel executed her brothers.
With ongoing rescue efforts by civil defense crews to recover bodies from the rubble, the Israeli operation comes across as involving widespread and indiscriminate destruction in the camp, far beyond its stated military targets.
Two Red Crescent paramedics were murdered by #IDF while they were working in #Rafah last night. Their ambulance was hit directly and intentionally.
Of course the usual excuse by IDF is that there were #Hamas fighters in the ambulances. Ignoring that injured fighters are not legitimate targets, specially if they are inside an ambulance receiving care.
@faab64 I despise authoritarians like Netanyahu (and Trump), but think the blame needs to be fixed primarily to #Hamas, which knew that the bombing, rape, and murder that started the latest episode of this war would lead to MASS causalities among the civilians it claims to represent.
"Source close to the Palestinian movement said decision to rule the war-battered enclave must be agreed upon by other Palestinian factions, not imposed by US or Israel"
"Hamas has the political flexibility to accept several formulas... for the future of Gaza. [It is] open to a nationally agreed formula for the good of its people"
"The source said that Hamas would only resume negotiations if Israel stopped the massacres and left Rafah"
It is like clock work, always the same lies: The Israeli military suspects that munitions or some other combustible substance caused a secondary explosion and subsequent fire at a complex housing displaced Gazans in Rafah, following an airstrike aimed at two top Hamas assets.
The incident resulted in the deaths of Palestinian civilians, and an investigation is ongoing.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had been tracking Hamas commanders Yassin Rabia and Khaled Najjar prior to the strike on the compound in the Tel Sultan neighborhood in western Rafah on Sunday night. According to #IDF intelligence, the area had been utilized for Hamas activities, including a nearby rocket launcher.
The military clarified that the strike occurred outside the designated “humanitarian zone” in the al-Mawasi region, which is over a kilometer away from the targeted compound. Steps were taken to ensure no civilians, particularly women and children, were present in the Hamas compound at the time of the attack.
Israeli fighter jets employed two small munitions, each carrying a 17-kilogram warhead, to minimize the risk of civilian casualties due to the proximity to the camp for displaced Palestinians.
Initial investigations by the IDF indicate that the two small missiles alone would not have been sufficient to ignite the fire. The probe suggests that ammunition, weapons, or other materials stored in the vicinity may have caused a secondary explosion and the resulting fire. #Rafah algemeiner.com/2024/05/28/idf-…
@faab64@palestine@israel This reminds me of #Israel claim that AlShifa Hospital was a #Hamas headquarters to try to justify the murder of hundreds of civilians there by the #IDF. I note that Israel stopped trying on that ludicrous excuse for #genocide after it had destroyed almost all the hospitals and clinics in #Gaza. They were targeted deliberately. Just another in the litany of #warcrimes.
“#Israel put forward a new cease-fire proposal and hostage release deal on Monday, which has now been passed on to #Hamas, an Egyptian security source told ABC News.
Mediators are awaiting a response from Hamas within 24 hours, the source said.
This is the first time Israel has taken the first move to submit a draft proposal since the war began, according to the source. Previous proposals have been initiated by Egyptian and Qatari mediators”
#Hamas has told international mediators it is ending its participation in #ceasefire talks aimed at ending the war on #Gaza, following the Israeli massacre in #Rafah on Sunday night, a source close to the Palestinian organisation has told Middle East Eye.
#domicide must be recognised as an international crime
The massive, arbitrary destruction of civilian housing in violent conflict should be recognised as a crime under international law, the UN’s independent housing rights expert told the General Assembly today [28 October 2022].
