A sample size of 1 isn't really meaningful.

Also, this post is refuting a claim that isn't really being made? At least not literally.

Lemmy users will cancel this for not being hardwired to defederate with Threads :^)

It's already illegal if your content is large enough to be copyrightable.

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

The last major holdout that is also financially dependant on Google. Chromium has consumed the internet in all but name.

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

Well, in that case you should never publish your code anywhere.

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

The issue is that the majority of people on the Fediverse are "techies" with specific interests, which skews the spectrum of content quite a bit.

The Fediverse is in an awkward spot. It needs more people like you to keep technology communities from becoming Linux circlejerks, but at the same time those circlejerks are driving people like you out.

@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

Didn't take long for instancism to become a thing here, huh

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

Honestly it's a great way to get people who just read the title to self-report.

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

Do you think comments like these are swaying public opinion in your favor?

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

"How do you know someone's a Firefox user? Don't worry, they'll tell you"

Theme Library Planning ( programming.dev )

Been working recently on a theme library for sublinks that will let themes be written in json files and then be read in and swapped between easily. (Ideally would allow people to make a theme at runtime using UI on instances that then generates a json file or zip file)...

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

Will there also be support for themes as CSS stylesheets?

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

Please just use the original title. Semantic CSS is an actual thing and it takes 2 seconds to google what it is.

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

People don't actually care about the article, they're just here to circlejerk about their hate for commercial software.

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

I'm confused. I opened the first 6 issues featured in your lemmy-ui link and you closed them all yourself?

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

Ironically, their comments are more accessible than anyone else's here.

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

What are you calling centralized here?

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

Multiple people on here have already tried to tell them.

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

The spammers are using a limited number of scraped Fediverse actors, which also included a handful of Lemmy communities.

If you weren't part of that list, you were mostly safe.

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

I did it too. Most of my contacts were not willing to switch. My colleagues at work stayed in their WhatsApp group, and many of my close friends did too. I essentially cut myself off from most of my social circles and threw myself into social isolation. Not a good time.

I ended up rejoining WhatsApp and concluded that in this instance, my mental health is more valuable than the privacy I gain by not participating in WhatsApp.

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

All the people that reply saying "But it is easy, I did it" fail to realize that their personal circumstances can't just be applied to everyone else.

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

I wouldn't mind if EU made it mandatory for them to be

They did. Signal and Threema just aren't interested: https://www.androidpolice.com/signal-threema-nothing-to-do-with-whatsapp-eu/

Why does hosting Lemmy require a display?

I'm trying to set up my own Lemmy server with Docker. I think I have everything set up, but I'm getting an error Cannot autolaunch D-Bus without X11 $DISPLAY. This error kind of makes sense, because I'm SSHing into my server and have not forwarded D-Bus connections, so $DISPLAY is undefined. But why does a Lemmy server need a...

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

As others have already said, Lemmy does not require a display.

You might want to try the Ansible method of setting up a Lemmy instance. I personally found it much easier.

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

What incentive would they have to betray your trust?

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

Why care which browser they use?

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

Search engines currently struggle with the concept of federated posts. My guess is that instead of finding a post's home instance, they accept the first mirror of that post and discard copies from all other instances through deduplication.

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

USB-C earbuds exist. No one is "forcing" you to do anything.

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

How would Bluesky be falling to enshittification if it can be federated just like Mastodon?

Everyone always says Mastodon can't be ruined this way because you can always move to another Mastodon instance. Wouldn't that also be the case for Bluesky, once federation kicks off?

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

But the AT Protocol is open, isn't it? Anyone can go ahead and create non proprietary software that lives on this protocol.

I understand your concerns regarding Bluesky specifically being proprietary, but as soon as someone creates an open source atproto server, you will be able to interact with Bluesky users without using proprietary software. It will require Bluesky to federate with instances using such software of course.

Not a fan of clickbait.

Edit: I was mistaken, my bad. I thought the article was referring to the admin deciding not to renew the queer.af domain, which was reported a few months ago.

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

Why was it a hard decision for you?

Not the person you replied to, but when a few friends of mine tried to migrate off Twitter, mastodon.social had closed sign-ups. So with the "official" instance unavailable, the issue was that there was a choice at all.

While there's only one "Twitter" or (presently) only one "BlueSky" to join, on Mastodon you suddenly have to decide which instance is the right one to make your account on. Which instance is most likely to stick around for the next couple years? Which instance is most aligned with your interests? Does the instance happen to (de)federate in any way that is a deal-breaker for you? Is the instance moderated well? You wouldn't have to think about those if you signed up to BlueSky.

It's an issue similar to what Linux has with distributions.

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

Maybe ask the people what they find confusing about Mastodon, and listen.

I'll give you example. Say I want to sign up , but mastodon.social has currently closed sign-ups. People tell me I can just sign up on any instance, but there's dozens of them and they all appear to be the same. As someone who's not familiar with federated services, I don't know what to base my instance decision on.

How would you help me overcome this choice paralysis?

HKayn OP ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

Not quite.

A project's repo would still be in one centralized location, like gitlab.com. But you'd no longer need an account on gitlab.com to make a pull request.

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

There are legitimate reasons for creating an entire instance for a specific fandom. Independence from other instances and their federation decisions is a big one.

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

Waiting for a conflict to arise just leaves you with a fractured community in the aftermath.

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

The aftermath of the conflict you referred to in your previous comment.

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

What will be replacing it? Bing?

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

Are we expecting normal people to learn how to self-host?

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

I don't think so. Wiby limits its index to specific kinds of websites by design.

I imagine it's great for entertainment purposes, but not for the things you'd usually use a search engine for (gathering information, troubleshooting issues, etc.)

Kagi has started using search results from Brave's search index. The LGBT community disapproved of this because of past homophobic actions by Brave's CEO Brendan Eich.

HKayn ,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

Kagi has recently started getting part of its search results from Brave's search index. That's literally all there is to it.
