Because of FPTP and the Winner Take All Electoral College, there is a lot of political pressure to only have 2 parties. In a better system (proportional, ranked choice, etc) it wouldn't break with more than two parties. In fact just reforming the electoral college to be proportional would likely allow 3 parties to exist.

If you look at history the last time there was a viable 3rd party it possibly initiated the civil war by allowing an anti slavery viewpoint to exist (which is good, but if we'd had a better voting system it would have happened earlier and reduced a lot of suffering)

Its not hard to talk about and the first step to solving the problem is to recognize our two party system exists because of the voting system we have. Once people agree its a problem then you move to solving it.

alaska did a direct democracy initiative in a republican controlled state. Is there an initiative for alaskan style top 4 ranked choice elections in your state? Why not?

  1. is a fake problem - If you can pass a driving test you can fill out a ranked choice ballot. I've never seen the (x is too hard average joe to understand) argument made in good faith on voting.

  2. Fair. Common criticism but often its still not a major problem. Electronic voting machines can throw an error message for an improper ballots as well.

  3. This is probably the best real criticism of RCV.

  4. Weird outcomes tend to happen the more candidates are involved. Realistically the top 4 jungle primary system used by alaska is quite good though and 4 candidates are unlikely to have weird outcomes except where one bloc has 1 candidate and a second large voting bloc has 3

felons should be elligible to vote. For one, there are statistically a number of people in jail who are fully innocent but convicted anyway. Second it means that politicians would have incentives not to ignore conditions of inmates. If you look at groups unable to vote: noncitizen legal residents, kids, and prisoners then you see people with fewer rightds.

this is also true for customers - imo customers also need a stake in businesses especially ones that have anything approaching a monopoly.

The obvious solution would be a law that any company of a certain size should have 25% of its board nominated and elected by non managerial workers and 25% appointed by public election or appointed by an elected official.
