yes there is currently extra housing but, unfortunately, sites like airbnb have moved large swaths of the housing market to the luxury hotel market leading to a shortage in actual housing as wealthy, investor, and corporate class people pay premiums for short term rentals that most people simply can't compete with.

airbnb itself is not the whole problem. But its important to recognize it changed markets worldwide by pitting the luxury hotel market in direct competition with housing

so the problem is more that the internet has caused a rich market to overflow into housing - you have to also consider people are going on work trips and getting reimbursed for staying at an airbnb etc. Wedding parties as well seem to prefer airbnbs. The result is a worldwide catastrophe for residential housing.

But its very simple: A high demand, luxury market overflows into residential housing. The obvious result is residential prices skyrocket with demand.

Did Airbnb cause this? not entirely, they're just the best at it. Addressing Blackstone will help by removing some of the cash competing for residential housing, but it won't solve the problem entirely until like wedding parties and vacationers go back to using hotels and companies are no longer able to reimburse people for airbnb stays. You have to address the excess demand from the market spillover that airbnb has made its profits on. Otherwise you're just ignoring one of the primary reasons Blackstone entered the market - there are lots of individuals doing the same thing as Blackstone on a smaller scale here

I actually think the best solution would be the government to build a bunch of extra housing and crash the rental market with a two pronged supply approach:

  1. sell housing to first time home buyers at 50% off under the condition they don't resale for 5 years and the government gets any value gains over the sale price for 10 years.

  2. triple the existing public housing stock while slashing requirements to get into public housing

    there's only hundreds of billionaires and 52 weeks in a year. Even if they can pay them all a 100 million each year you still have to spend time with them and take them on your yacht to you private sex trafficking island. It takes a lot more work than just the money up front. The direct gifts and freebies are just the tip of the iceberg.

    It all falls under court reform, the political viability isnt in question:

    -amend the constution

    -make a law restricting the courts ability to accept and decide cases

    -pack the court

    -retire aging justices

    -have the senate subpoena clarence thomas and make him say why he won't recuse himself from cases involving his billionaire friend

    The only approach that ever works politically is the "all of the above" approach because as soon as you start taking things off the table the opposition can laser focus down the "reasonable options". This isnt new:

    thomas jefferson pioneered this strategy in the US where he kept agreeing slavery was immoral but it was "too hard" to free the slaves. In reality he loved owning people and designing his little slave town. The result of this tactic was it took a war to resolve slavery because politicians were too cowardly to address it.

    What it means when something is too hard solve with politics, is that it needs to be solved with violence. What it doesn't mean is that is that people will stop talking about it just because it "doesn't seem politically viable".

    You have throw so many things at fox news and other propaganda outlets that they can't just pick one and focus fire it into the ground with lies and fear. Something like an amendment will draw fire for sure but it lets all the other stuff sail by.
