Pop culture illiterate.

We are all part of this biological entity called Earth.

The more I learn, the more I know I don't know. This is OK. Nobody can be an expert in everything. Lean on each other’s expertise.

Grok all the hues, shades, tints, tones, and intensities of everything you encounter and learn. Nothing is back and white, and even shades of gray often fail.

I immediately thought of Gia, except Gia would have been wearing men's clothing. Vintage shirts and pants she found in upper east side second hand shops.

Yes.

If you watch the movie Gia (HBO 1998). Jolie doesn't get Gia's masculinity right. Gia channeled James Dean. I have a copy of the movie, but I can't finish it.

In 1979 and 1980 we had an odd complex big/little sister type friendship that formed after she asked me out. I was too young, so nothing came of it. Unfortunately we both soon descended into heroin hell together. I managed to escape in the fall of 1980, she took a lot longer to hit bottom and escape. By then she had HIV.

I suppose this is understandable, and maybe even forgivable, considering that the US corporate media's coverage of the climate crisis is almost nonexistent.

In 2023 — a year of constant climate and environmental disasters — less than 1% of news on ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox dealt with climate change. Not even 1%‼

Still, it's disappointing to hear that less than half (46%) of the American public perceives global heating as being a very serious problem.

HEADLINE: "Poll finds fewer Americans are concerned about climate change"

That percentage is in stark contrast, as we learned last week, to the overwhelming number of climate scientists who report feeling "hopeless and broken" over our government's lack of action on the threat we face.

As I've noted many times, it is impossible to defeat an underground guerrilla movement that has the popular support to recruit new members. HAMAS has that support.

Israel should recognize this and end the useless and deadly attempt to do the impossible. HAMAS is an evil group of terrorists, but there is no use in futile efforts to eradicate it, and the effort is no excuse for killing thousands...

I used to be really excited for what the next smart phone would offer. Or the next tablet. Or hell, the next smart watch.

Not any more. And of course this happens when all technology (or gadgets) become old-hat.

Thing is there IS new stuff that might be exciting. VR. MR. AR. They haven't hit their stride yet. I SHOULD feel excited to see what happens when they do.

    But I don't.

Why/? I honestly think is the software. The monetisation. The -companies- themselves.

The companies selling the new gadgets make me not care.

No matter how fancy the tech, it won't stop it just straight-up boring me. Even when Apple or even Meta show off something new with a VR headset, I never do more than glance at it for a moment, before browsing away to a different article or video.

Basically, what I'm saying is: capitalism killed my interest in gadgets and technology, almost entirely.

I'm more excited by weird $40 open source bits of hardware, despite many using decades old tech.

So that's what I think I'll focus on. The weird shit. The cool shit. The bizarre re-uses of 8-bit Z80 or 6502 processors. Of cheap e-Ink displays on 2010-vintage microcontrollers.

Maybe I'll find some joy again there.

    @breadandcircuses @davidho
I bet all the breakthroughs have been found and squashed.

The real problem is the energy stored in the carbon bonds is what is being used to generate work when burning fossil fuels. It takes just as much energy to sequester that carbon as it released, and there are significant losses. So burning fossil fuels while sequestering the CO2 released is impossible. We must go 100% over to solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal energy production with battery backup.

Iran launched 100 drones, or more, in attacks on Israel. This was a response to an Israeli attack on an Iranian consulate in Syria. Israel and Iran have been, formally, at war for decades. Can anyone point me at info on how and when that state of war started? …

It all went south after the revolution in 1979.

Obviously biased, but this gets the major points & timeline: https://iranprimer.usip.org/blog/2020/jan/21/iran%E2%80%99s-confrontation-israel-over-four-decades

I spent the overwhelming majority of my weekend working.

I am forcing myself to NOT work any more, for the evening.

I have opened a spritzer and I am thinking... movies.

I've finished Fallout, and Ripley, and am up to date on Sugar, so... yeah. Movies.

    But what to watch…

Seeing NY made me think of Taxi Driver (1976).

    @GottaLaff
Keeping the wild birds from roosting anywhere near the livestock (cows in this case) is the vital bit. They are the scourge of all trying to keep down antibiotic use on farms.

Mice, rats, raccoons, etc can also spread diseases to the cattle. For dairies it is harder to keep them away from livestock due to the large amounts of feed stored in open silage pits, and fed in bunks.
