At first I thought it was another safe with even more money, and I was wondering if I should get a magnet.

What's the collective noun for a group of politicians?

Deebster ,
@Deebster@programming.dev avatar

Its IMDb page is a bit sus: the reviews are an almost unbroken stream of gushing 10 star reviews, but there's plenty of people voting it 1 star too. Astroturfing or just polarising?

DIY store Waitrose

I don't get this joke - why is this (decidedly non-budget) supermarket a DIY store?

Deebster ,
@Deebster@programming.dev avatar

I think a lot of sci-fi is a warning, e.g. almost every distopian setting - I don't think that's hopeful, unless you argue that we're sensible enough to heed said warnings.

Where I'm from, cats have paws. (Also, I opt out of AI images showing human-handed cats, don't you dare)

I thought Jurassic World Dominion was the final one? Wasn't that why they brought back so many of the original cast? And it was pretty terrible, and dragged heavily towards the end.

Hollywood is addicted to established IPs, find some courage and be inventive again, please.

“You Got This” Assures Father Who Doesn’t Know How To Help with His Son’s Algebra Homework ( lemmy.world )

In a scene not too uncommon in today’s world, local dad Alan Devlin reassured his high school son, Keith, with an enthusiastic “You got this!” to cover for having absolutely no idea how to help him with his Algebra homework....

Deebster ,
@Deebster@programming.dev avatar

When Khan Academy was a big thing, there was talk of flipping teaching - having the homework be watching instructional videos (when you can pause, rewind and rewatch without embarrassment) and doing homework in school hours. It sounded quite good (at least for motivated kids (wasn't me)), but I guess it died on the vine.

I guess my argument would be that you can choose/configure Linux to use many of the Windows conventions, whereas Mac has its own way of doing things that need learning.

Deebster OP ,
@Deebster@programming.dev avatar

It was a choice of posting to there or here (I assume most people who are in one are also in the other).

I imagine they're fairly dialect-dependant as well, at least at times.

Ha, in my original reply I'd started to contrast my SSB accent with American - I wouldn't go as far as the final panel, although I feel I'd understand it easily enough.

Also, even in SSB (as opposed to the more London Estuary type English), we use glottal stops a lot more than over the pond: /h ɔ́ ʔ p ə t ɛ́j t əw/

Deebster OP ,
@Deebster@programming.dev avatar

You pronounce the t in hot and then pronounce the p of potato?

Deebster OP ,

I'm sitting here trying to replicate what that sounds like from your description and I've only succeeding in sounding like a madman.

One place I worked had a small park, so sometimes I'd go for a lap or two to think something through - the fresh air, mild exercise, change of scenery and lack of distractions wroked wonders.

Don't downvote stuff just because you're not interested in it! There's no algorithm you're training, you're just being rude to people.

Downvotes should be for worthless content and people being dicks.

I'd assumed it was servers running on renewable power, although I'm not sure how they measure that. I know some hosting companies and CDNs have that as an option, but I don't see how you'd know if each server chose that option so I guess it's more like "servers with green hosting companies".

Regarding sleep quality, why did humans evolve to require full darkness?

I know evolution is governed by chance and it is random but does it make sense to "ruin" sleep if there's light? I mean normally, outside, you never have pure darkness, there are the moon and stars even at night. In certain zones of the Earth we also have long periods of no sunshine and long periods of only sunshine....

There's some evidence that the bacteria in the air are different at day vs. at night

This is really interesting, do you have more info on this to share?

I see that first paper is for tropical environments, is this also found in other parts of the world?

Ah, the major system. I have a slightly different version: 1 is L, 5 is f/v (FiVe) and 8 is ch/J. Sun, sci-fi, lichee maybe.

That blog's such a treasure! I've ended up on there several times over the years for completely disparate reasons like solving Countdown numbers games, etymology and explaining mathematical paradoxes.

What's this kind of thing called in linguistics? Where you parse the sentence wrong (for comedic effect in this case), something about dangling modifiers, maybe?

Which country?

aluminum

Never mind.

actually...

I've just checked fact-checked myself and apparently Canada also says aluminum but 🤷

My absolute favourite is when the examples say something like "production code should not be written like this, this is just for clarity" with no indication of what's wrong with the code.

Is it just normal Rust stuff like there's unwraps everywhere and it's one big file? Does the example have security or performance problems? Is the example unidiomatic or over-verbose or is it ignoring features real-world code would use? EXPLAIN YOURSELF!

Study after study has shown that trees in cities offer huge benefits: offering shade and cooling (reducing energy consumption), draining storm/flood water (very useful in our more extreme climate), cleaning the air and emitting oxygen, homing wildlife, improving mental health by reducing anxiety and depression, being nice to look at.

Every city tree should be treasured and protected.

Those photos really sell the value of those satellites. It seems ridiculous that we don't have replacements up there given how many launches there's been in recent years.

Why? Unless you like breaking into other people's devices, this is good news.

An update regarding the future of m/AskKbin (where we are headed towards) - AskKbin - kbin.social ( kbin.social )

Hello everyone, check out my announcement post linked above and if you don't know who I am, check out my past post to learn more about me and It would mean a lot of you show your support for my future iniatives inside the fediverse!...

I think all of the communities would rather have something more than just a bare link. I'm not sure why you're responding with such indignation, to be honest, it was a perfectly reasonable suggestion, politely made.

So you think it's too unreasonable for you to cope with?
