it's a little brown and white striped bird, eating seeds off the ground, video taped from fairly far away. It's a green spring day, car traffic can be heard in the distance. The sun is shining bright. The foreground and the background are very out of focus.

I call this series "A Beakful of Bugs"

a song sparrow standing up with its neck stretched all the way, as to look around. it is still carrying plenty of bugs in its beak
the song sparrow now hopped around and is standing under a beam of sunlight, looking pretty against the background
the song sparrow flew away and landed on a thin leafless branch. it is hiding its face behind the branch a bit, grasping tight to the branch. it is still holding tight to its delicious snacks

Song Sparrows mostly leave the downtown core for thicker woody spots like Stanley Park, but a few stay to raise families -- like white-crowns, it looks like they're ground nesters, needing only bushes and hedges.

This is a fledgling, just learning to fly. Its parent was nearby, coaxing it from location to location with calls and songs -- Vancouver, May 16

I don’t know what it is but I love taking pictures of song sparrows. Just something about the flecked brown pattern with a green background. And they let you get so close! Some of my best photos are of these birds.

A song sparrow jumps into the air above a house sparrow. The two are yelling at each other, in the middle of a spat. The house sparrow is facing us, but we can only see its head and tail sticking up over the ridge made by the grass in the foreground. The song sparrow has its wings partially spread and its feet open, pointed at its opponent. The light is even from the overcast sky, which is not visible. Both the foreground and the background are very out of focus and filled with natural green and brown tones.

    It's such a beautiful weekend, popped out once again to Stillwater NWR to see what birds have made it this far on their spring migration.

    A large Bald Eagle perches on a thick branch covered in rough bark, gripping tightly with massive yellow talons. The bird's tell-tale black body and white head and tail are easily visible amid the winter bare branches. It's powerful yellow beak is open in a wide yawn.
    An absolutely gorgeous non-breeding Ruddy Duck swims across a rippled blue lake, it's brown and tan feathers broken only by the large white patch on its cheek and black cap that blends into the black bill. The tall brown tail is held upward. The duck is glistening due to the water droplets clinging to its feathers.
    A Say's Phoebe perches on a bent reed, it's beak full of small twigs and other nesting material. The small bird with a brown back and light yellow chest stands on thin black legs as it's head is tipped slightly to look up at the human that is in the way. One glistening black eye seems to say "Please leave." I did.
