@lovelylovely one that BlueWave and MAGA have in common is that they toss around “unAmerican” to defend their inability to discus difficult political subjects on their own terms. Calling someone unAmerican for their political stance is exactly what the fascist MAGA wants to codify.

The Biden admin needs to be challenged on its failures. Period. If they aren’t strong enough for that, then Biden shouldn’t be running.

@lovelylovely Whoa settle down there. Calling muslim Americans terrorists is an Islamophobic trope. Its a primary vote, and Biden himself has voiced regrets about his unflinching support for Israel. Imagine for a moment what it's like for Palestinians seeing their friends and family murdered by US funded weapons. If we're going to earn their votes, we must stop this genocide! There's a ceasefire vote tomorrow in the UN. We need to presure Biden to support it. That's where our energy is best focused if we want to win in November.

There's a very real joy and hope one feels when listening to #POTUS candidate #CornelWest deliver honest truths and solutions.

I look forward to following his #USPol activity over the coming year.

Today in Labor History February 2, 1931: U.S. citizens of Mexican heritage were “repatriated” to Mexico. During the decade’s first four years, the federal government deported anywhere from several hundred thousand to 1.8 million Mexicans. 40-60% of those deported were U.S. citizens and overwhelmingly children. President Hoover blamed Mexicans for the Great Depression and deported them in huge numbers to win support from his right-wing base.

The “repatriation” is part of the story of the Young Adult novel “Esperanza Rising” by Pam Muñoz Ryan.

From the book’s Afterward:

“…County officials in Los Angeles, California, organized "deportation trains" and the Immigration Bureau made "sweeps" in the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles, arresting anyone who looked Mexican, regardless of whether or not they were citizens or in the United States legally…”

said Fri he would use new emergency authorities to “shut down the when it becomes overwhelmed” if passes a bipartisan plan the has been negotiating.
The comments signified a remarkable shift in tone for a Democratic president & underscored the urgency of the issue for his reelection campaign as immigration remains one of his most vexing & challenges.

No.

The article that started this thread is about a Democratic Party-led attempt to address issues related to the border. That's literally the definition of "dealing with it."

The Republican Party is going to block all attempts to deal with the border. Because, as you mentioned, the Republican Party has no interest in solving that problem or any other problem, as they view all governance as contrary to their goal of overthrowing the United States government.

The thing about the "Israel wants Trump" argumemt is that I think what wants even more than is to not have a be seen to lose reelection for supporting Israel.

And I don't say that as some kind of checkmate, just a consideration I haven't seen brought up before.

Keeping up with and commenting on #Trump news 24/7 doesn't make you an informed citizen, much less an activist. It makes you a partisan hack who refuses to acknowledge the humanity of people who are already being killed by American #fascism. Turn off the Rachel Maddow and start reading some al jazeera. #racism

Both have their hands/feet dripping with BLOOD. Both are war criminals in equal measure.

Fat chance you are going to get young votes in Nov, Mr President

Book review for 2024 is Scott S Greenberger's The Unexpected President: The Life and Times of Chester A Arthur. A good biography of the 21st President of the United States. His reputation, and the reason for Garfield's murderer, created a cloud over Arthur's assumption of the presidency. ☕☕☕☕review

Book review for 2024 is Edward P. Crapol's John Tyler, the Accidental President. I think that seeing the 1840's era Presidents getting more critical looks is good for the study of American History in general and presidential history in particular. I think that the work adds to the understand of not just Tyler's administration but of 1840's America as well. A ☕☕☕☕ review @bookstodon @books @bookstodon

Book review for 2024 is Robert Caro's The Passage of Power: The Years of Lyndon Johnson. The first volume of this series, The Path to Power began a 40 plus year reading journey of every American President, that, with exception of POTUS 46 and 45, has continued to this day. This volume of Caro's series focuses on the 1960 election and up to the spring of 1964. Well written and moving.

Today In Labor History March 27, 1866: President of the United States of America Andrew Johnson vetoed the Civil Rights Act of 1866. However, Congress overrode his veto and passed the bill, the first time this had occurred over any major legislation. The bill was the first in the U.S. to define citizenship, and to affirm equal rights under the law for all citizens, including African Americans. Johnson’s rationale for the veto was that the law “discriminated” against whites in favor of blacks.
