I went to see the swamp today. The summer weather has arrived, there is little water, although not completely dry. And these mushrooms were shining at me from a distance. They're tiny, actually, about 5 mm across. And they have eyelashes!
In the swamp, all I have to do is squat in one spot and spin around for fifteen minutes - I keep seeing new amazing, tiny things to photograph.

Turns out it is weirdly fascinating to snap pictures of #moss to share with #mosstodon
This one, says Lens, is called Cladonia portentosa and I found her very strange. The color, the shape. Look like something straight out of a Petri dish.
These weird little cups are growing up out of the mulch in the garden bed in shady spots. We live in Brisbane, Australia.
They're about 9mm high and have a 7mm opening at the top. They appear to contain 3-8 silvery-grey... coins? Seeds? Spores? Some are closed over at the top with an off-white cap. They are bristly on the undersides of the "cup" portion.
For now I'm calling them "fairy boba". They are very cool.
Mosses have grown on this good Earth for over 400 million years.... Able to withstand drought & freezing, they can survive & thrive in extreme habitats from mountaintops to deserts. Beloved in traditional Japanese gardens I love my mossy friends wherever I go, wandering through forests, staring at the ground, or gazing up at the branches of gnarly trees, moss is there, doing their good work. They grow in the cities too. Look for moss. You will find them. #wsanecterritory#moss#苔#mosstodon
All sorts of lichen are colonizing some of the wood logs I let sit in the garden. And it's absolutely magnificent. Loosing yourself in the tiny details of lichen is quite a hike for the mind.
