Students from the University of Guadalajara (UdeG) set up an encampment at the Belenes University Center for Social Sciences and Humanities (CUCSH), in solidarity with the Palestinian people and to demand decent conditions at the university.

The camp was set up at the end of a university and popular assembly that began at 11:00 am. In the assembly, the students discussed different problems both internationally and locally, and agreed to start the installation of the camp to make the following demands:

  • To clarify the relations and agreements that exist with the State of Israel, and in case they exist, to end such relations.
  • Break all types of relations with the genocidal State of Israel at the local, state and federal levels.
  • Dignified mental health care by the University of Guadalajara.
  • A dignified menstruation program that is universal and accessible to all menstruating women and individuals.

Today in Labor History May 8, 1911: The anarchist Magonista army captured Tijuana, with support from IWW members. As result, they now controlled of most of Baja California. During their short revolution, they encouraged the people to take collective possession of the lands, create cooperatives and refuse the establishment of any new government. Today there is a Ricardo Flores Magon Street in Tijuana, near Avenida Revolution.

"Between the Central Library and the Rectory of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, students, workers and academics set up an indefinite encampment, as part of the global actions that thousands of university students around the world are carrying out in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

"In Mexico, the main demand is that the government and the university break academic, political and economic relations with the State of Israel, in addition to taking a stand against the genocide in Palestine."

/ Students begin new wave of protests against Gaza war after US arrests

“now is the time to act”

Protests were held at least six universities, including Sheffield, Bristol, Leeds, and Newcastle, with others expected to follow suit.

Some universities, such as the University of York, have already taken steps to address students' concerns by announcing that they no longer invest in companies that primarily make or sell weapons and defense-related products.

Excited to share this lengthy interview I conducted (and translated) with an feminist-anarchist affinity group in Mexico City, now up on @igd_news:

"As for our aspirations, we simply do not have them. The least we try to do is to walk towards life in a dignified way, towards death in a meaningful way, even if it is for ourselves. The maximum: the social revolution, the destruction of the capitalist-patriarchal system, the creation of other forms of living life, although we are not married to the idea that someday this will appear, rather we are building it as much as we can in the here and now."

Today in Labor History April 10, 1919: Mexican troops ambushed and assassinated Emiliano Zapata, revolutionary indigenous and peasant leader. Zapata’s Rebel Army of the South played a major role in the overthrow of the dictator, Porfirio Diaz, defeating the federal army in the Battle of Cuautla in 1911. Also in 1911, Zapata began implementing the Plan de Ayala, redistributing land in the regions controlled by his army to peasant farmers. However, when former revolutionary Madero took over, he disavowed the Zapatistas, calling them simple bandits. He implemented a scorched earth policy, burning villages and imprisoning survivors in forced labor camps, in his quest to hunt down Zapata. Madero’s successor, Venustiano Carranza, continued his scorched earth policies and finally succeeded in killing Zapata in 1919.

One of the focuses of the recent Mexico biodiversity expedition was finding these interesting Ditmars' horned lizards. I found the first one, of only two found on the entire trip. This was not a range extension, per se, but more of an infill between known ranges in the sky island region of northern Sonora.

There is a tradition that you have to kiss the first one you find and then a bottle of tequila is opened for the occasion. Out of four trips, this was the first one I ever found.

They are fascinating little creatures. Their main predators are ravens and small canids like coyotes and foxes, so they are not particularly afraid of large animals like us or cows or deer. They are quite docile and even a wild one will take a grasshopper offered to it without trying to run away.

Alt text (because the site keeps crashing): first photo is a small horned lizard sitting in the palm of my hand. Second photo is me fake-kissing the same lizard while holding it.
