"In 2024, for the first time, it finally feels like we have a critical mass of people and platforms who are interested in rewilding the internet to bring back what we lost, and create something new. ... There's a palpable feeling that this just might be the year of the open web."
Author copies arrived of this bulky anthology of African ghost stories. Now I can say that my story was published in the same book as the legend, Amos Tutuola!
I believe Flipboard will prove to be a counterweight to Threads and a prime location for news & pundits (as #Meta does not really desire the latter two on their platforms).
If you're still using Substack for your newsletter and want to migrate to Ghost, which has announced that it will join the fediverse this year, here's a step-by-step guide by @wes. It covers costs, what you'll need, setting up Mailgun and Cloudflare, how to move over your posts and subscribers and numerous other helpful details.
It is not public knowledge, but the #OddLostAndFound office is quite a popular #ghost vacation spot. They feel right at home among so many magical items and, every once in a while, some of them are lucky enough to find that long lost thing that kept them tied to this world. In any case, they are always good guests, always keep their rooms tidy, don’t complain about the food, and very rarely scare new members of the staff, so they are always welcome here 👻
The Fediverse isn't just sharing links to other platforms, it goes a lot deeper than that. Fediverse discussions and interactions happen across multiple platforms. This happens so seamlessly, you may not even realise it is happening.
For example, I replied to a PeerTube account's post from Mastodon, and my reply appeared on PeerTube (see screenshots).
The significance of the recent #Ghost announcement is people on Mastodon etc will be able to interact seamlessly with Ghost blogs.
With #WordPress and #Ghost both on the Fediverse via ActivityPub integration, I wonder if #Medium is kicking themselves because they haven’t federated their blogging platform.
I understand they operate a Mastodon server, but I think most people would also prefer to receive their blog posts.
The blogging platform #Ghost is working on adding #ActivityPub integration. That means, among other things, being able to follow Ghost-powered blogs and comment on articles right from your Mastodon account. The website they made to explain their plans is really nice! This is what momentum looks like.
I've been using Ghost in places where I might have used Substack before, and it's great to see the Open Web folks working together to make stuff interoperable (AND DISCOVERABLE) instead of the Walled Garden plays we've been subjected to for the past decade and a half.
Might be time to bring "Notes from the Void" out of its current hiatus, convert it to Ghost, and start weekly posting again.
Ghost is considering joining the Fediverse! That's right. The nonprofit company is contemplating federating Ghost over ActivityPub. Here's Ghost's survey asking users about their usage of ActivityPub platforms like Mastodon and how they expect ActivityPub functionality to work in Ghost (many of my followers here will have better insight into this than myself, so please do submit your feedback; it's a very short form and the impact could be great!): https://tally.so/r/m67X4P#Ghost#ActivityPub#Fediverse
The solution to #Substack isn't to switch to another capitalist. The solution is to cajole all your software developer or tech savvy friends into making it super dead simple to self-host your own blog using #Ghost or any number of good-enough self-hosting blogging platforms.

You can run an existing Fedi-compatible blogging suite for you and several (but < 50) of your friends — making sure at least two work in tech and have a vested interest in the site staying up.

Ghost, the superb, open source, newsletter platform (and rival alternative to Substack) is offering free subscriptions to help get started with self publishing.
