'Anti-scab legislation has now been passed by both Houses of Parliament. It will soon be illegal for employers in federally regulated sectors of the economy (eg telecommunications, transportation etc) to use scabs during strikes or lockouts. An historic win for workers!' - Gil McGowan
This Canadian Member of Parliament asked ChatGPT for a list of capital gains tax rates by country, got a nonsense answer, screenshotted it, and then tweeted the incorrect information.
Many people who won't be personally affected by a change in the capital gains tax inclusion rate but are upset about it are falling for one or more of these myths.
Having to pay taxes on slightly more of their income has the well-heeled reaching for torches and pitchforks. Meanwhile, most of us manage to get by paying tax on 100%
It is stunning to me that so many states are passing laws that constitute gross violations of very basic human rights - from denying reproductive care to banning masks- and what I’ve heard from media north of the border is …
… crickets
While I understand many people may be feeling tired/overwhelmed by American news, our conservative gangs all aspire to do the same, so we’d best be paying attention, it’s a window into our own future.
Cases of whooping cough, also known as pertussis, are rapidly rising in UK, France, USA, Spain, and #Canada.
Mounting evidence shows that #Covid infections can create lasting differences in some people’s immune systems leaving them more susceptible to other diseases.
Whooping cough is one of the most infectious diseases in the world with a reproductive number of 12-17… similar to measles.
The problem with good news in the real world is that it's messy. Neat endings are for novels, not the real world, and that goes double for the climate emergency. But even though good climate news is complex and nuanced, that doesn't mean it shouldn't buoy our spirits and fill our hearts with hope.

Former head of CSIS Richard Fadden re: #NSICOP report.
"The alleged behaviour is not treasonous as there is no [longer] an offence of “foreign interference.”
"Under the guise of "improving" it, former PM Stephen Harper had 🇨🇦 treason statute revised, severely narrowing it's scope to military & scientific matters only, so now the recent allegations of MP's colluding with foreign powers no longer qualify as treasonous acts."
Please boost and sign (open to all! name and place pls) this open letter that will be sent to the Parliament of Canada. This is a followup to #e4769 petition now awaiting a formal response from Government.
This Open letter will be sent on Monday June 3rd to the Speaker of the House of Commons and other critical officers and Ministers to encourage a positive response to the petition.
My cup overflows with anger toward these lying, deceiving, murderous, oil and gas companies. So this morning, I did something I've never done before in hopes the people coming home from their long weekends in Tofino and Ucluelet get the message.

"Some things people need to understand about Pierre #Poilievre's approach to scrums. First, it takes enormous ego & boundless disdain to confidently pursue his approach.
Most people would wither under the stress of playing the game he is playing. They would worry about looking the fool. They would worry about getting caught out. Choking. Ruining their good name, forever. Not him. He pushes into these scenarios with relish.
👉 PP enjoys the obvious confusion and discomfort it causes." /1
🇨🇦 "By treating the serious business of public governance as blood sport entertainment, we have transformed it into just another ring at the circus. We shouldn't be amused. We should be worried. Pierre #Poilievre is going to break things. Important things. Fragile things. And we will regret it." /end
What capitalist industry and commerce has done just in the last three decades, pumping nearly a trillion tons of CO₂ into the air, has no precedent.
Never before in Earth’s history has so much carbon dioxide been added to the atmosphere over such a short period of time.
HEADLINE: Chemical analysis of natural CO₂ rise over the last 50,000 years shows that today's rate is 10 times faster
"The rate of CO₂ change today really is unprecedented," said Kathleen Wendt, assistant professor in Oregon State University's College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences. "Our research identified the fastest rates of past natural CO₂ rise ever observed, and the rate occurring today, largely driven by human emissions, is 10 times higher."
During the largest of the natural rises, carbon dioxide increased by about 14 parts per million in 55 years. The jumps occurred about once every 7,000 years or so. At today's rates, that magnitude of increase takes only 5 to 6 years.
Never in the whole history of Earth has so much CO₂ been poured into the atmosphere in such a short time.
Our rulers are literally conducting an insanely dangerous experiment, making it impossible for anyone to say with any certainty what will happen next. No one knows, because nothing like this has ever been done before.
So it’s looking like Canadians paid for Mr.#Poilievre’s cross-country ‘Axe the Tax’ rallies…where Mrs. Poilievre sold her swag merchandise… and they both grifted the taxpayer using “a loophole”
holy hell 🇨🇦
Randy Weekes, long-time Speaker of the #Saskatchewan Legislature was shaking & trembling today as he read into the record his fear that one of the most powerful ministers in Scott Moe's cabinet might murder him for following the Speaker rules.
Mr. Weekes says Government House Leader Jeremy Harrison has wanted to carry handguns in the assembly & actually brought in a hunting rifle.
"In American mythology, people are rich because of 'hard work.' Yet nobody can explain why those who do all the actual labor have no money." - Steven Salaita
I know you guys hate twitter but here's Justin Trudeau with a simple 3 minute explainer on changes to the the capital gains tax. #cdnpoli
Bothering you with this from twitter because the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Canadian Federation for Independent Business, Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters, Canadian Venture Capital Association, etc etc all just had to retract their own media announcements in which they 'misunderstood' the less than 1% of people affected by it.
Hockey rules aside, the refs set the tone of the game. When they allowed fighting - there were fights.
It seems the Speaker has finally drawn the line on what is considered acceptable MP conduct. Now, if he doesn't reign them in, #PP and his Cons will continue to make a mockery of the federal #government.
