"In American mythology, people are rich because of 'hard work.' Yet nobody can explain why those who do all the actual labor have no money." - Steven Salaita
I know you guys hate twitter but here's Justin Trudeau with a simple 3 minute explainer on changes to the the capital gains tax. #cdnpoli
Bothering you with this from twitter because the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Canadian Federation for Independent Business, Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters, Canadian Venture Capital Association, etc etc all just had to retract their own media announcements in which they 'misunderstood' the less than 1% of people affected by it.
Last fall, Pierre Poilievre blamed Prime Minister Trudeau for a diplomatic chill with India.
a) It has been revealed that India interfered in the Conservative leadership race in favour of Poilievre.
b) When it came to the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil, #Poilievre believed India's prime minister, Modi, over our own Canadian intelligence services.
Add this to PP's spectacular record of being wrong on everything of consequence.
Vancouver Island University, my employer, is now threatening to remove the encampment and have people arrested. I'm absolutely sick.
I had corresponded with our President on May 1. I sent this to our Chancellor, Chair and President today.
Dear Chancellor Sayers, Chair Anderson, and President Saucier,
I am extremely concerned by the escalatory words and actions of VIU today given the encampment’s peaceful and respectful nature and disposition to date. The President has stated to me in her response quoted below on May 1 "that VIU’s approach to the encampment is based on respect and peace for protest and freedom of expression.”
The locking of all campus buildings today and the very clear threat by VIU Security (see attached noticed link) to have peace officers remove tents and equipment under the Trespass Act under threat of arrest is completely contradictory to the President’s statement and is exactly the approach that I flagged to the President as being extremely dangerous and likely to result in harm to the protesters and deep embarrassment to the University itself. There are peaceful ways to do this.
As an institution that is supposed to be fully immersed in the spirit and action of Truth and Reconciliation, I find these statements and actions to be horrendously contradictory, misguided, colonial, and dangerous.
As an individual employee, VIUFA faculty member, and member of this community on Snuneymuxw, Coast Salish and Nuuchanulth lands I am embarrassed, and I beg the University to reconsider and reverse its actions.
"Alberta’s largest power generator has cancelled one proposed wind farm and put three other developments on hold, citing provincial rule changes to renewable developments and uncertainty around broader electricity market reforms."
That is a nice, simplistic, acontextual, and irrelevant story. Thank you for sharing it, but I find it to be defeatist. I prefer to look at #history.
The #USA is a multiparty #democracy. The current dominant parties have not always existed. There have been periods of multiparty governance in the USA; it is the normal circumstance in other, similar, #democratic states.
Voting for any evil is morally and ethically wrong.
My faculty association's response to the university's recent letter to students:
"The Administration appears to believe that with the stroke of a pen it can transform freedom of expression from a fundamental right, the protection of which is the sine qua non of the University, into a privilege that the Administration may confer or deny at its pleasure. This cannot stand."
Today, in 🇨🇦 House of Commons, Conservative leader, Pierre Poilievre was given an opportunity to denounce the white supremacists he's met with and the recent endorsement of RW conspiracy theorist & Sandy Hook school massacre denier, Alex Jones.
He chose not to.
I totally understand. I am a Canuck who lived in the USA from 1995-2003. I returned to home because I could see where the country was going. Now I’m relocating to Colombia because:
I cannot afford to live in my own country.
The medical system is being privatised. (My wife lost her doctor years ago and will never have another.)
Trudeau killed #ProportionalRepresentation and as a result, a hard right asshole (Poilievre) is likely to win a majority.
"Poilievre’s seemingly drunken meeting with the lunatic fringe says a ton about the man #Canada is seemingly about to elect. And absolutely none of it is good"
The article says that Poilievre's conservatives are not your grandparents' cons, but I don't think you have to go back that far. They're a recent populist phenomenon, inspired by Trumpism.
"He is a tool of a fossil fuel industry that has spent millions denying and delaying the urgent need for climate action — an industry that wishes ill for our children in the name of grotesque profits for a wealthy few."
Reminder: Health #Canada increased the regulations on natural health products in June 2023 to ensure companies make truthful claims about the products they sell.
The Opposition immediately ramped up a national campaign against the increased regulations with warnings about increased costs.
Conservative MP Stephen Ellis, the health critic in Pierre #Poilievre's shadow cabinet, called the move unnecessary "gate-keeping"
Canada should maintain its multinational approach to the Israeli GOV/Palestinian conflict by defining its own position to expressly and positively reject toxic tribalism, reaffirming its commitment to multiculturalism, and compartmentalizing itself from the American support of the Israeli GOV.
Wall Street Journal highlights Googles retaliation against its workers after reports of Google and Amazon’s joint contract with Israel's Ministry of Defense was revealed, known as Project Nimbus.
Also, “In 2018, Google decided not to renew a contract with the Pentagon code-named “Project Maven” after it became the subject of intense internal debate. The company promised not to make artificial-intelligence technology for military weapons and adopted a set of AI principles to guide its work.”
Google Workers are of the view that the companies systems are integrated, and essentially work on Google's various projects are in/directly contributing to the AI technology so prominently featured in Israel's war crimes with Israel’s Lavender Program.
Tech giants appear to be diving head first into the ethical concerns surrounding AI.
The article also highlights that parallel protests are happening with Amazon employees.
US media - and perhaps by extension US GOV - have turned on its leaders of tomorrow for Pro-Palestine protests. Al Jazeera reports that students are subject to attacks from pro-Israel counter-protesters, smeared in US media as being anti-semitic, and subjected to retaliation from their schools.
