call it out - it's frigging corporate price gouging

Pollievre listen to experts? You have got to be kidding me.

“The economists pushed back on assertions the carbon price has driven up the cost of living, and called out opponents for failing to pitch a less costly alternative to reduce emissions.
"And they certainly aren't offering any alternatives that would reduce emissions at the same low cost as carbon pricing," read the open letter, which had garnered 213 signatures as of Wednesday afternoon.”

A new study has found Canada’s Big Banks gouge $7.7 billion out of Canadians every year in excessive fees that UK and Australian banks don’t charge! We need to end the gouging by banks in Canada! https://democracywatch.ca/campaigns/bank-accountability-campaign/

This is literal doom, but I actually find it mildly encouraging that our security and government services are being told the truth about the current state of the nation, society, and world. This is the kind of report that every single politician needs to not only read but really understand.

Quotes below:

"The situation will probably deteriorate further in the next five years, as the early effects of climate change and a global recession add their weight to the ongoing crises"

"accelerate the decline in living standards that the younger generations have already witnessed compared to earlier generations"

"the difference between the extremes of wealth is greater now in developed countries than it has been at any time in several generations"

"many Canadians under 35 are unlikely ever to be able to buy a place to live."

"Law enforcement should expect continuing social and political polarization fueled by misinformation campaigns and an increasing mistrust for all democratic institutions"

"Access to [big data] will allow private entities to develop the means to exercise undue influence over individuals and populations at an unprecedented level"

"In the wake of COVID-19, Canada's governments have normalized operating during a respiratory pandemic... the damage to the economy and to the social fabric of the nation is ongoing"

Journalist: The last time I spoke with Brian Mulroney, I asked him about his legacy. He told me that was for historians to judge now. So how would you, a political scientist, judge his legacy?

I'm not an historian of Canadian federal politics in the 1980s and 1990s, but I know several other historians who are. They're not hard to find. Do you f'in homework CBC. @histodons

For some reason on / #X lately, a bunch of high-profile people have been re-upping this thoroughly debunked article from 2016, or offshoots of it.

I honestly wonder about the critical-thinking skills of people in positions of power and influence who spread this nonsense.

The entire argument is based on an assumption that trees absorb carbon dioxide FOREVER and never fall down, burn or otherwise die and then re-emit that carbon.

Spoiler alert: They do.

I wrote about this years ago, and how trees have actually been a net SOURCE of carbon emissions for decades now (thanks largely to all the forest fires and pine beetles):

Canada's forests actually emit more carbon than they absorb — despite what you've heard on Facebook

Has anyone actually heard Conservative leader Pierre claim that after he's cancelled the carbon tax, Canadian consumers will see big box retailers, gas companies & grocery stores reduce their prices enough to result in significant savings?

Because that's what many of PP's rally attendees think is going to happen. 🤦 Some even think they'll be buying a house straightaway once he's elected.

Today, Mr. started off his rally with a massive lie when he shouted out, "On April 1st your food is going up 23%."

Then he held up a St, Patricks Day beer and yelled “Every time someone says ‘axe the tax’ I’m going to have to take a sip”

Canada should maintain its multinational approach to the Israeli GOV/Palestinian conflict by defining its own position to expressly and positively reject toxic tribalism, reaffirming its commitment to multiculturalism, and compartmentalizing itself from the American support of the Israeli GOV.

"Ex-U.N. Official Craig Mokhiber: Israel Must Be Held Accountable for Violating Ceasefire Resolution”

Mokhiber highlights that the US continues to provide diplomatic interference on behalf of Israel. He goes on to describe the US as a co=belligerent along side Israel, and highlights that the US GOV's behaviour forces the burden to maintain pressure on Israel upon the general global communities and the grassroots public.

While Mokhiber points out the UN Security Council resolution is indeed binding, the US spreads disinformation about the resolutions effects. Also, the US continues to prevent the UN General Assembly from using tools in its disposal to intervene.

Mokhiber finds that the UN Humanitarian agencies have performed well and with purpose. But, in contrast, the UN Political based agencies responsible for addressing issues of sexual violence, children in armed conflict, etc, have been politically compromised and with little to no effect due in part to the UN Permanent members.

US GOV continues to serve as a co-belligerent with Israel. As others have already commented, the US burned its credibility on the world stage. By extension, some Western mainstream media outlets have collaborated with the US and Israeli GOVs that raise questions about their ability to report fairly.

In the years to follow, perhaps the public will look back at these dark days as the new face of American Empire in the 21st Century. Ghastly, appalling, and calamitous. Worse that even Europe was unable to reign in its own support of Israel or temper the US support of the genocide of Palestinians.

“The Biden administration in recent days quietly authorized the transfer of billions of dollars in bombs and fighter jets to Israel despite Washington’s concerns about an anticipated military offensive in southern Gaza that could threaten the lives of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian civilians.”
