I'm finally digging into Kipling's "Kim" via the audiobook narrated by Simon Vance. It's a delight, as long as you keep firmly in mind that it's a product of its cultural time.

It's billed in Everand as a "coming of age tale," but given that teenaged Kim has a scarily accurate understanding of the way the "adult" world works from the outset of the story, I don't think it's a bildungsroman at all. It's more like a hyperrealistic pilgrimage novel.

Yesterday I learned that infamous double agent "Kim" Philby apparently got his nickname from the novel, which made me think immediately of another novel that contains a bildungsroman AND like "Kim" is a story: Le Carré's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

    Good bookend novels, I think.

Given how regularly the Intersect inside Chuck’s brain flashes on things or people he sees, one of two things is happening.

    1. Chuck is the unluckiest bastard in the world and just randomly stumbles upon incredibly dangerous criminals on a weekly basis.

    2. There is international spy crime happening in Los Angeles literally everywhere and all the time.

Whenever I get discouraged, I remember this woman and her struggles, courage and triumphs as not only a rescuer of slaves trapped in the South but also as a Union spy: Harriet Tubman. I look at this small woman and it’s hard to believe that she a huge human being. @blackmastodon @BlackMastodon

Allan Pinkerton, creator of the Pinkerton Detective Agency, the private cops that murdered dozens of labor organizers and activists, that tried to frame Big Bill Haywood for murder, that provided the perjured testimony and bogus evidence that got 20 innocent Irish American miners executed as Molly Maguires only immigrated to the U.S. to avoid a stiff prison term in Britain, where he was wanted for armed insurrection. Yes, America’s first celebrity cop had been an arsonist, vandal and violent soldier in the radical Chartist movement, before fleeing to the U.S. with his 15-year-old wife.

If you think the were just a nightmare from America’s labor and activist history, think again. They are still at it today, undermining labor organizing at Amazon, Apple and Google, among other.
