I was lucky to get a ticket for a nice match of , Spain 3 vs 0 Croatia. It was funny that at the entrance, two guys asked if I had a jacket to cover the St Pauli shirt. I asked why and they said because it's a Spain vs Croatia match. 🤦

At least in the ticket check before going to my seat, another guy was more reasonable, praising St Pauli and the next time he didn't ask for my ticket anymore, because he recognized me. Funny enough, behind my seat there was a German family with the shirts.

COVID is not over. Scientists are worried about bird flu. We need to be ready for the next pandemic. Right now we need to depoliticize and normalize mask-wearing. North Carolina’s anti-mask bill recklessly does the exact opposite.

🇪🇸Spain: Thousands of Taylor Swift concertgoers in Madrid have come down with COVID-19 after Eras Tour.

"One specific X account, known for being a hub for Spanish Swifties, took a poll of their followers, asking if they had become sick with COVID-19 after one of Swift's concerts in Madrid. Of the 10,796 people who answered the poll online, 35%, or 3,780 of the concertgoers said they had."

The board of the Faculty of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences of the Universitat de València has unanimously approved the exclusion of Israel from the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The faculty’s management believes that allowing the State of Israel to participate is a tacit acceptance of its crimes against humanity.

It is time to kick Israel out of the Olympic Games for as long as they deny Palestinians their basic human rights.

A nation comitting genocide should not be allowed to participate in Olympic games.

Today in Labor History June 7, 1896: Anarchists supposedly set off a bomb during a Corpus Christi parade in Barcelona, Spain. As a result, a dozen people died and thirty were wounded. No one knows who actually set off the bomb, but the government blamed anarchists, who had set off numerous bombs over the previous four years. Consequently, the government went on a witch-hunt, arresting and torturing dozens of anarchists in the infamous Montjuich Prison. However, many leading anarchists denied the accusations and said they would never have set off a deadly bomb in a working-class community like this. They reserved their attacks for members of the ruling class. Nevertheless, the government tried and executed five anarchists, all of whom proclaimed their innocence. They sentenced 67 others to life in prison. Worldwide protests erupted in response. Montjuich Prison was graphically depicted in the opening scene Victor Serge’s epic novel, Birth of Our Power, which he wrote while imprisoned in the Soviet Union for his opposition to Stalin.

"Spillage, or #curtailment, is an expected and efficient feature of #RenewableEnergy systems.

For example, we don’t build additional highway lanes to accommodate traffic for the busiest hour on an Easter weekend.

Coal generators prefer to continue to generate, even at negative prices, rather than completely shut down [which is even more costly. So] renewable energy is spilled, rather than coal shutdown. We actually have a glut of coal, rather than renewables."

#Israel / The boycott is already here — and growing; but the current government has no answers

Some recent examples of boycotts and sanctions against Israel:

  1. #Spain, #Norway, and #Ireland recognizing a Palestinian state.

  2. #Turkey imposing an embargo on Israeli exports.

  3. #France canceling Israel's participation in a major defense exhibition.

  4. The #Maldives banning Israeli citizens from entering the country.

  5. A British coffee shop chain, Pret a Manger, canceling its franchise agreement with an Israeli company.

  6. McDonald's facing a boycott in some countries due to its Israeli operations.

  7. The Israeli hi-tech industry, which is a significant contributor to the country's economy, is also being affected by the boycotts.

[...] "McDonald's network also faced a pro-Palestinian boycott that hurt its sales worldwide, according to its reports. In April, the global network acquired the Israeli operation, which consists of 225 branches, from franchisee Omri Padan, [...] McDonald's entry into Israel was one of the harbingers of the end of the Arab boycott that Israel had faced since its establishment. The acquisition of the Israeli operation by the global network was intended to reduce friction between the network and Muslim customers worldwide - among other things, by reducing the identification of the local operation with IDF soldiers and the captives held in Gaza [...] After October 7, Padan led an unprecedented operation of offering a 50% discount to soldiers in uniform at all network branches - and this increased the pressure on the global network. Estimates are that after the deal is completed, McDonald's will reduce or cancel the discount - in the hope of weakening the criticism and boycott against it worldwide."

Possible long-term effects these boycotts will have on the Israeli economy: higher living costs and reduced competitiveness. But the Israeli government's policies and actions are leading to increased international isolation and economic damage, and Israelis will, ultimately, bear the costs of these decisions.

I apologize for asking an uncomfortable question, but has there ever been a debate in Germany about replacing the Iron Cross symbol of the German army?

I applaud every delivery of German equipment to Ukraine, but whenever I see the iron cross on a Leopard tank, my heart skips a beat.

To me, modern day Germany is a beacon of freedom, and I feel this symbol is associated with the opposite.

Picture 1: Iron cross on modern day German helicopter.

Today in Labor History May 31, 1905: The Spanish anarchist Alexander Farras threw a bomb into a procession headed by French President Loubet and the King Alphonso XIII of Spain. The leaders were not hurt, though several people were wounded. Farras was never caught. Four other anarchists were arrested, tried and acquitted. Then, the following year, again on May 31, anarchist Mateo Morral made another attempt on King Alphonso XIII. He hid a bomb in a bunch of flowers and threw it at the King during his royal wedding. Because he worked in Modern School’s publishing house and was a friend of Francisco Ferrer (the founder of the first Modern Schools), Ferrer was later arrested and imprisoned as an accomplice. recognizes Palestine and calls for a ‘viable’ state based on 1967 borders (El País, 2024-05-28)
    ———

“Sánchez made clear the formula proposed by Spain in its recognition: ‘A viable state with the West Bank and Gaza connected by a corridor [and with East Jerusalem as its capital] and unified under the government of the Palestinian Authority.’”

    cf. https://www.heraldo.es/noticias/internacional/2024/05/28/frases-pedro-sanchez-reconocimiento-espana-estado-palestina-1737325.html

In fact, this remark on “a ” connecting Gaza with West Bank surprised me. The idea sounds, once presented, so natural but scarcely heard.

Today in Labor History May 28, 1968: Students occupied the University of Madrid (still under control of fascist dictator Francisco Franco). Cops raided the campus and removed the occupiers, and then shut down the University. At the time, all political parties had been banned, except the Falange. Franco had banned all protests and labor unions, too. Thousands had been rounded up and tortured, imprisoned or killed. Like much of the world at the time, a New Left movement had formed in Spain, though Spain’s was completely underground due to the repression of the dictatorship. Protests and demonstrations had been occurring for months. Most were met with violent repression and imprisonment.

#EU / Spain, Ireland, Norway to recognize Palestinian statehood today (Tuesday)

#Spain and #Ireland are the largest and most politically influential #EU nations to recognize Palestinian statehood, joining a few other European countries that have already done so.

While largely symbolic, the three nations hope their move will gather momentum and spur more EU countries to follow suit. The #UK, #Australia and some other EU states have indicated they could also recognize Palestinian statehood. However, #France said now is not the right time, while #Germany sided with the #US in rejecting a unilateral approach, insisting dialogue is needed for a two-state solution (the model, the Oslo accords, favored Israel and the status quo at the expense of Palestinian right for self-determination).
