“Divestment at the University of Edinburgh: Breaking from Balfour’s colonial legacy: As a university steeped in the legacy of Balfour, we have an urgent duty to end complicity in Israel's settler colonial project. Divestment from companies complicit in occupation, apartheid, and genocide is the first step toward historical redress.”
by University of Edinburgh Students and Staff Divestment Movement in Mondoweiss @mondoweiss
“This Monday 17th June 2024, the University of Edinburgh Court rules on a historical decision on whether or not to begin an active and immediate process of divestment from ‘controversial weapons’ complicit in Palestinian dispossession and Israeli settler colonialism, which the University has been entangled with for well over a century. The ruling of the court could mean immediate divestment from companies like Amazon and Alphabet as their ‘AI solutions’ might be plausibly in use in the mass targeting of civilians in Gaza. This would set a grand precedent and would serve as a concrete step to reducing our institutional complicity in violence against Palestinians.”
The Moscow stock exchange can no longer trade in dollars and Euro, and the Russian stock market is declining fast, and Russian banks are preventing customers from logging in, after the US unleashed extensive new economic sanctions.
The #UnitedStates should slap sanctions on ICC ofcls who seek an #arrest#warrant for PM Benjamin Netanyahu, a top foreign policy adviser to #Republican presidential #candidate Donald Trump said on Tues after meeting the Israeli leader.
President #Biden on Monday evening signed a bipartisan bill prohibiting Russian imports of enriched #uranium a move intended to cut off one of the last significant flows of #money from the #UnitedStates to #Russia amid the #war in #Ukraine.
But #sanctions on #uranium imports have taken much longer, in part because #Russia supplies roughly 20% of #US#nuclear fuel, leading some lawmakers to fear disruptions to the nation’s 93 nuclear reactors.
“It’s kind of ridiculous that it took as long as it did to get to this stage,” said Scott Melbye, exec VP of mining company Uranium Energy & president of the Uranium Producers of America, a trade group. “But we’re just glad that we got here.”
The last 48 hours, Russia has crossed the border to Ukraine at three different locations north of Kharkiv, and new Ukrainian land is now contested.
At its widest point, the advance is 7 kilometers.
30 settlements have been bombed by Russia, and Ukraine has evacuated 1775 citizens from the area.
As Russia moves closer to Kharkiv, they open the possibility of shelling the city using cheap, regular artillery, so Ukraine is forced to push The invaders back across the border, to keep Kharkiv safe.
@randahl We need to ratchet up real disinscentives on the axis of evil allies who are enabling #Putin and all his armed forces. Countries selling tech to Russia - People's Republic of China, in particular. Countries buying Russia's fossil fuels - PRC and India. Countries selling arms to Russia - North Korea and Iran.
He knows that the #sanctions for those items can easily be busted by non-Chinese businesses around the world, whereby businesses in Central and #SouthwestAsia act as proxies/conduits for those sanctioned items, sending them direct to #russia after passage through their respective countries first.
But #China must've increased their supply quite a bit for #Blinken to publicly call them out. Not that it'll have any affect on them doing it.
"We are witnessing a historic process -- Russians are leaving for the first time in two centuries," independent Azerbaijani analyst Elhan Shahinoglu told AFP.
The #UnitedStates will impose sanctions on Iran’s missile & drone program, as well as entities supporting the Iranian regime or military, #NationalSecurity adviser Jake Sullivan announced late Tues.
Earlier in the day, #Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said additional sanctions on Iran would be forthcoming in retaliation for its attack against Israel over the weekend.
“#Treasury will not hesitate to work w/our allies to use our #sanctions authority to continue disrupting the Iranian regime’s malign & destabilizing activity,” she said.
Experts, however, say the #UnitedStates faces limited meaningful options for doing so w/o antagonizing #China or risking a spike in the price of oil.
#US ofcls & their #EU#allies are discussing potential #economic responses to Iran, as leading Western ofcls converged on Washington for the spring meetings of the % #IMF & #WorldBank. Their options are limited because #Iran is already one of the most heavily penalized countries in the world, w/ US #sanctions in effect on its #banking, #manufacturing & #energy sectors.
Accused by the West of importing weapons from North Korea, Russia on Thursday imposed the end of the UN sanctions monitoring system against Pyongyang and its nuclear program, a decision denounced by numerous members of the Security Council.
Moscow vetoed a draft resolution that extended for one year the mandate of the committee of experts that oversees these sanctions and was supported by 13 of the 15 members of the body. #China abstained.
"What Russia has done today undermines peace and security in the world, all to promote a corrupt agreement that Moscow has sealed" with Pyongyang, reacted Matthew Miller, spokesman for the US State Department.
North Korea has been subject to Security Council sanctions since 2006, mainly related to its nuclear program. These measures were reinforced several times in 2016 and 2017.
Moscow has found better ways to conceal #influence ops, by using harder-to-trace tech, to amplify arguments for #isolationism before #UnitedStates elections, acc/to disinfo experts & #intelligence.
In recent days, #intelligence agencies have warned that #Russia has found better ways to hide its #InfluenceOperations, & Treasury issued #sanctions last week against 2 Russian companies that it said supported the Kremlin’s campaign.
The stepped-up ops, run by aides to #Putin & Russian #military intelligence, come at a critical moment in the debate in the #UnitedStates over support for #Ukraine.…
#Mexico will not accept #deportations made by #Texas “under any circumstances,” the country’s foreign ministry said on Tues in response to #SCOTUS’s decision to allow TX to arrest migrants who cross into the state w/o authorization.
Mexico’s top diplomat for North America rejected the #SupremeCourt’s ruling, saying that #immigration policy was something to be negotiated between #federal governments.
President Andrés Manuel #LópezObrador [#AMLO] of #Mexico … has also called on the #UnitedStates to suspend #sanctions against #Venezuela & lift the blockade against #Cuba, saying that such measures would reduce #migration flows from those countries. And he has called proposals to build walls or close the #border as “electoral propaganda.”
I know North Korea isn't on much of anybody's mind right now but this article on their ability to leverage Russia's invasion of Ukraine to put themselves in a much stronger position vis-à-vis sanctions is worthy of consideration.

#DOJ ofcls announced the arrests of 2 “facilitators” of 1 sanctioned #RussianOligarch, while also moving to #seize 2 luxury condos in Miami held by another Russian oligarch already under #UnitedStates#sanctions. The DOJ also filed a separate #indictment against an ofcl in connection w/an alleged scheme to operate a luxury yacht owned by a sanctioned Russian oligarch, & it highlighted a #guilty plea related to #MoneyLaundering on behalf of other sanctioned #Russian entities.
This would be a violation of the #1967outerspacetreaty Outer Space Treaty, to which Russia is a signatory reports #Bloomberg citing sources familiar with the issue.
#EU approves it’s 13th sanctions package and "one of the broadest" against #Russian so far. This will add almost 200 entities and individuals to #sanctions lists.
The #US plans to announce it's own package of sanctions after the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei #Navalny
"Despite their narrow focus, recent international sanctions against settlers are laying the foundations to turn verbal condemnations into tangible action."
