The #SupremeCourt will return to the bench starting at 10 a.m. Friday to release its next round of 2024 decisions, with about a dozen major rulings expected over the next week or so. The justices do not say in advance which opinions will be released
#ClarenceThomas wrote the majority in NYSRPA v. #Bruen & was the sole dissent in today’s decision.
Bruen’s ruled a #NewYork#law was unconstitutional & that carrying a gun in public was a constitutional right guaranteed by #2A.
#SCOTUS said states are allowed to enforce "#ShallIssue" permitting, where #ConcealedCarry applicants must satisfy criteria, like #BackgroundChecks, but "#MayIssue" systems using "arbitrary" evaluations by local authorities are unconstitutional.
A #NewYork appeals court has restored to November's election ballot a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would bar discrimination based on "gender identity" and "pregnancy outcomes."
"Like for so many of my generation, Noam’s writings were an inexhaustible source of insights on everything, from the hidden constraints that guide the evolution of #language acquisition to the insidious workings of concentrated power and the subtle means by which the wealthy stay in power. So, I risked asking him a question forged by curiosity and not a little embarrassment: “What made you catch the train from #Boston to #NewYork City to interview me?” ⏩
Sharks, #Trump claimed, were attacking more than usual (not true) & posed a new risk bc boats were being required to use batteries (not true), which cause them to sink bc they’re too heavy (really, really not true—the world’s heaviest cruise ship, Icon of the Seas, stays afloat bc of laws of #physics despite weighing >550M lbs).
#Trump, seeking to show unity, to meet w/ #GOP lawmakers on Capitol Hill
Trump plans to return to Washington on Thurs to meet w/congressional #Republicans near the #US Capitol, as the GOP tries to present a united front & coalesce around a #policy agenda [ha!] heading into the Nov #elections.
The trip will be #Trump’s 1st meeting w/ #GOP lawmakers since a jury found him #guilty on all 34 #felony counts of falsifying business records in his #NewYork#ElectionInterference case, making him the 1st fmr #POTUS convicted of a #crime. Since the historic guilty verdict, however, #Republicans have largely fallen in line behind Trump, as he & President #Biden continue to be locked in a tight race.
It will also be Trump’s 1st public visit to Capitol Hill since the #Jan6, 2021, #insurrection…
In Vox, I explained why small business owners consistently exaggerate the share of customers who drive, undercounting those who bike, walk, or ride transit.
Merchants' pro-car bias leads them to fight critical policies like NYC congestion pricing as well as dedicated lanes for bikes and buses -- moves that could boost their bottom line.
Today in Writing History June 10, 1928: Maurice Sendak, author of “Where the Wild Things Are,” was born in Brooklyn, New York. A little boy once sent him a card with a drawing on it. Sendak was so moved he sent the boy another letter with his own personal “Wild Thing” drawn on it. The boy’s mother sent Sendak a thank you note saying that her son loved the card so much he ate it. Sendak considered that one of the highest compliments he ever received. Sendak was an atheist Jew who lost numerous family members in the Holocaust. He was also gay.
Trump's team is more focused so far on building a sprawling network of "#ElectionIntegrity" #lawyers & #PollWatchers than on rounding up organizers & door knockers to reach voters.
It's a sign that 5 months before Election Day, the legal battle is underway —& that Trump PLANS to cry "rigged" if he loses, as it did after the #2020election & his #felony#convictions.
Today in Labor History June 7, 1913: The radical labor union, IWW, held a fundraising pageant at Madison Square Gardens. The production featured songs and a reenactment of events from the ongoing Paterson strike. It was created and performed by 1,000 mill workers from the silk industry strike. John Reed organized a march of strikers into Manhattan for the pageant.
#POTUS#Biden said Thurs he would not #pardon his son, if convicted.
Biden said “yes” when asked in an ABC interview if he would rule out pardoning Hunter Biden…. Biden also said yes when the interviewer asked if he would accept the trial’s outcome.
The president has said for months that he would not pardon his son.
“I’ve been very clear — the president is not going to pardon his son,” WH press sec Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters in Dec.
Hunter Biden is accused of making false statements in filling out paperwork to purchase a gun in 2018. The max sentence for the most serious charge is 10yrs in prison.
Hunter’s trial is unfolding days after #Trump was convicted of all counts in his #FalsifiedBusinessRecords 2016 #ElectionInterference trial in #NewYork.
Trump has vocally criticized the trial as “rigged”….
"He's trying to undermine it" #POTUS said re Trump. “He got a fair trial. The jury spoke."
Before last week’s #guilty#verdict on 34 #felony counts, #Trump was found by the court to have violated the #GagOrder 10 times, incurring fines & prompting an explicit warning from #NewYork Supreme Court Justice Juan #Merchan that the next violation would result in #incarceration. That never came to pass.
The gag order remained in effect after his conviction Thurs, & Trump has appeared to flirt w/several potential violations since then.
Remember: Trump's jury was made up of ordinary citizens — selected with input from Trump's own lawyers. The jurors were not politicians or members of the "Deep State." They were Americans who did their civic duty.
@rbreich#Trump Supporters will first repeat the lie of a 'rigged' trial and a "conflicted judge" (what the hell is that even supposed to mean, can he speak English? Being conflicted is not the same as having a conflict of interests). Anyhow, when pushed about the verdict being handed by a #jury not a judge, supporters say & I quote 'ah but that's #NewYork, it's clown show, what do you want?". Yes. Can't wait for Trump's #America flag to contain 11 states again. What will that country be called?
Each page yesterday took him just a little more than a minute, so this will take >30 mins.
Between that & the testimony readbacks, also expected to take >30 mins, there will likely be >1 hour this morning w/the jury in the courtroom, not actively deliberating.
Fmr DC Metropolitan PD Officer #MichaelFanone’s 78-year-old mother was the victim of a #swatting call hours after he spoke outside the criminal #TrumpTrial in #NewYork.
During the #insurrection on #Jan6, Fanone was nearly killed by #Trump supporters while protecting congresspeople & staff inside the Capitol building.
" Bill that would make Vermont the first state to have a 'Climate Superfund' takes a key step forward
The #ClimateSuperfund Act directs the state treasurer to work with climate scientists to catalog the damage Vermont has seen due to #ClimateChange between 1995 and 2024 — and what it will cost to adapt to a warmer future with more volatile weather.
If the bill becomes law, #Vermont could start to seek damages in 2027."
"After a swell of grassroots pressure, the #NewYork State Assembly passed the #ClimateChangeSuperfund Act by a vote of 95-46, to make fossil fuel polluters pay for costs associated with climate change, including climate resiliency projects. The Senate passed the bill in May; it now requires Governor Hochul’s signature to become law."
