Totally agree with @PavelASamsonov UX Design research isn’t about producing/writing output “persona” document. It’s about designing, setting up & running your experiment to prove/disprove human behavior hypothesis.
This would be like a chemist not bothering with the laboratory experiment or Pharma not bothering with clinical trials & letting LLM come up with words, cos cheaper & unethical as hell!
> "No, AI user research is not “better than nothing” — it’s much worse"

@futurebird @dahukanna @PavelASamsonov

“AI” and “LLMs” are being used as synonyms with increasing frequency which can complicate our discussions.

I agree with the OP that this specific example of “research” seems … problematic.

OTOH we know that machines can make new discoveries. This was the case with Alpha Go, and as @nonlinear mentions might be a good way to guide more expensive research efforts e.g. Alpha Fold etc.

I decided to find out if any progress had been made on the science behind why some ants are attracted to electrical fields. After filtering out exterminators (it's so demoralizing to search for information on creatures you love and find nothing but people who know nothing about them boasting about how they will kill them all) I found what looked like a blog. But, who the heck is "James Brown"? Never heard of the dude. Maybe he could be my new friend if he likes ants enough to blog about them!

@futurebird seo is soooooooo annoying.

The internet was supposed to be a platform for sharing information.

It’s degraded into algorithms for capturing eyeballs and advertising $$$

We need to reevaluate how we define “value” in our culture.

@futurebird back in the early days of the internet people maintained curated indexes and “web rings” of mutual trust and respect.

Maybe we can mine the past to inform the future we want to create?

As someone who teaches digital art and design, I used to expose students to Adobe products because they are industry standard and often listed as job requirements. I am switching to only using free and open tools.

This is handy graphic by Twitter user @xdanielArt has many interesting options.

I hope Adobe’s hubris leads to great new software made by communities.

I want this to be the good news it sounds like... really he's not the only one who could stand to go back to school.

@futurebird I am 53 and would go back to school in a heartbeat if I wasn’t supporting two college bound kids.

Is there a good resource or book for learning about some of the details of how webservers work?

For example if I want an IP address on a intranet to be a webpage that people on that intranet can go to... how would I set that up from scratch. Let's say I have a machine with a static IP on the local net... (but what I really also need to understand is how a static IP is established locally, a DNS?)

Maybe the dream book or resource doesn't exist. But I ask anyway.

(it's macs if that matters)

@futurebird

There are a lot of resources that go deep on what a web server is.

The question is what is the correct level of detail for where you are now.

Maybe this is a good place to start:

@futurebird

I am assuming this is all because you are curious and want to learn the nitty gritty details, or want to teach about it.

If on the other hand, you are just trying to setup a private web server on your LAN to share data, you can probably download a specific Raspberry PI distribution and follow a few page README. Something like Internet in a box maybe:

The bald eagle could have easily gone extinct. But we did all sorts of "woke" things protecting it legally, ran conservation and study programs, banned DDT (that was good for other reasons too) and in 2007 they were removed from the endangered species list.

Likewise pine forests could be dead from acid rain.

The ozone could have a huge hole.

We CAN take care of nature when we want to. And the successes have been worth it.

I feel like we forget this, you know?

@futurebird I tell young people about these course corrections frequently. They need examples where policies and regulations were effective. I tell em how in my childhood the air often stunk of petrochemicals. We need to cultivate hope.

A lightly left-leaning generally Democratic friend has just now noticed that freaking out about the election is reasonable... but they do take my opinion somewhat seriously (even after calling me "probably a communist" I have no idea)

I made such a horrible face (involentary) when they said something about giving money to Biden I had to make another suggestion ... uh..."Democracy Docket?"

Any democrats who might not get the help they need from the DNC but still might win I could also mention?

    Borecore Manifesto
    Tenets of boring fancy dress:

    1. “the fit must fit” The most important rule. It’s not easy to find clothes that fit, fashion manufacturers aren’t always on your side. Learn to sew, find a tailor, investigate made to measure.

    2. “follow the dress code so perfectly it breaks” Borecore exists at the intersection of every dress code. If your fit makes sticklers feel you did something wrong —but they page desperately through their rulebook & can’t say exactly what you win. 1/

    The half-baked philosophical conundrum that keeps me up at night most often is simply: why is my consciousness limited to me in particular? Why am I not everyone? Or everything? or nobody? Or you? Or an ant? Or an ant colony? How did I find myself in this particular stream and what is the nature of the boarders that keep me within it?

    This idea generally frustrates and freaks me out and I doubt there is a sensible answer, I doubt it's productive to think about, but I worry on it over and over.

    @futurebird seems like many people are missing a part of your question. I get this feeling:

    So there is software running on this persons hardware, let’s call that me. Very similar software is running on lots of other people’s hardware. But why has my consciousness bound to this one? What is the nature of this software that is recognizing it self here.

    I like Douglass Hofstadter’s writing about this.
