#NowWatching Spielberg's made-for-TV movie, Something Evil (1972), starring Darrin McGavin. The transfer is terrible but I'm wildly curious because the description sounds folk horror-y.
Moving on... #NowWatching American Gothic (1987) on #Tubi. An 80's slasher I somehow haven't seen even though I remember the VHS cover from Blockbuster. It stars the late, great Yvonne De Carlo (Lily Munster) as an unhinged backwoods matriarch.
Some thoughts on Charles Laughton Directs ‘The Night of the Hunter,’ a very fascinating shot-by-shot, making-of documentary included on the Criterion Night of the Hunter blu-ray. https://boxd.it/65wN49
Today, March 18, Seattle high schooler David Lightman teaches his friend Jennifer Mack about war dialing, hacking, phreaking, and the importance of infosec (WarGames, 1983)
Well, I’ve seen both #Dune movies now. My reactions to both were the same: I don’t think they’re great films but I think they are good, competent adaptations of the novel and good Dune fan experiences, if you like the world of Dune. But they are a bit like Nolan films in that they seem sternly and rigidly on-track. Not a whiff of spontaneity, no real spark of life. Locked-down, airless filmmaking. Not my cup of tea.
#OnThisDay, March 9, in 1954, journalist Edward R. Murrow reported on the “Red Scare” investigation of Communists led by Senator Joseph McCarthy. The broadcast, known as “television’s finest hour”, ultimately led to McCarthy's downfall (Good Night, and Good Luck, 2005)
Soavi's The Church, aka one of the several Demons 3 (Italian horror movie franchises are bonkers), makes a great double feature w/ Lamberto Bava's Demons or Carpenter's Prince of Darkness 🤘
I love this movie so hard & not enough horror fans have seen it. I'd also argue that--while it's definitely gory--being a Clive story, it's interesting gore w/ a narrative purpose. The goal isn't to try to make you barf or go to therapy.
Currently watching the unrated director's cut of The Midnight Meat Train (2008) on Vudu. I always forget the 00's were the Blue Filter era of filmmaking.
So I did end up watching The Crow last night. I sometimes forget how overwrought and earnest 90s art could be, but I loved nearly every minute of it (the visuals, action, and soundtrack mostly) - it was like being transported back to 1994.
I remember the days when Universal Studios Hollywood had the Backdraft theme attraction. It was a recreation of the warehouse fire at the end of the movie and you could actually feel the heat from the flames as the scene played out.
❤️ Brewster’s Millions — Classic comfort movie that I watched many times on TMC (at least I think that was the name of the channel) as a kid.
❤️ Sullivan’s Travels — I have a hard time hearting this movie, despite its reputation and my appreciation of Sturges, because of the awful, sentimental scenes at the end where Joel McCrea laughs uproariously at the cartoon. It gets dangerously close to being the preachy, self-regarding thing it’s satirizing.
Heute vor 60 Jahren feierte "Herrenpartie" Premiere, ein weniger erfolgreicher #Film von #WolfgangStaudte. Die geringe Resonanz hatte v.a. geschichtspolitische Gründe, so unsere #Filmkritik:
