In the late 90s, when this was only known by the Catholic Church leadership, those leaders tried to canonize him to turn him into a Saint. Non-Christian media started digging into his WW2 relationship with Nazis and they stalled the process. It was officially ended when they unsealed the records in the mid-aughts.
