The #GOP’s sudden turn away from #GayRights — & acceptance
Americans’ embrace of #SameSex#rights & acceptance of gay Americans has been one of the steadiest trends in recent political history, w/support for #SameSexMarriage rising from <30% in the mid-1990s to ~70% today.…
But there’s increasing evidence that these gains have halted & even reversed, largely thanks to #Republicans moving in the opposite direction — in some cases, sharply.
Gallup is the latest to show this:
• #GOP support for #SameSexMarriage has declined from a high of 55% in 2021 & 2022, to 49% in 2023 & now to 46% today — a 9-pt drop over 2 years.
• Over that same span, the percentage of #Republicans describing same-sex relations as “morally acceptable” has declined from 56% to 40% — a 16-pt drop.
Those are the biggest drops in the decades-long history of Gallup polling these issues.
This wasn’t #Trump’s first appearance at the #Church; he also held a rally there w/ #TurningPointUSA in 2020.…it’s an ideal venue: A weekly attendance of around 21k believers makes this one of the largest churches not just in AZ but in the nation.
Dream City…is a mecca for special guests who blur the line between #religion & #politics.
The measure in #Louisiana requires that the #TenCommandments be displayed in each #classroom of every #public elementary, middle & high #school, as well as public college classrooms. The posters must be no smaller than 11 by 14 inches & the commandments must be “the central focus of the poster” & “in a large, easily readable font.”
It will also include a 3-paragraph statement asserting that the #TenCommandments were a “prominent part of American #PublicEducation for almost three centuries.”
That reflects the contention by supporters that the Ten Commandments are not purely a #religious text but also a #historical document, arguing that the instructions handed down by God to Moses in the Book of Exodus are a major influence on #UnitedStates#law.
Generally, a party in fed court can only assert his or her OWN rights & cannot raise claims about the rights of 3d parties who are not before the court.
