I've been a bit quiet on here, but for a good reason: I was preparing for, travelling to, then enjoying the amazing island of of the coast. Spending a few hours surrounded by hundreds of yesterday was amazing, they are brilliant little with big personalities!

My thanks to all involved in protecting their island home, and to the organiser of the party I went with!

A Puffin standing on a patch of bare, sandy earth amidst Mayweed plants. The bird's body is facing towards the left of the picture but the head is turned to face directly towards us. The upperparts, wings and neck are black, as is the head except for the large white patch on each side around the eyes and cheeks. Each side of the beak, which is short and much taller than it is wide (very apparent in this image!), has at its base a large patch of dark blue enclosed by a thick yellowish border; the rest of the beak is red with a couple of thin yellowish stripes. The short legs and webbed feet are orange. The Mayweed plants are short, and bear lots of flowers which each have numerous white petals surrounding a yellow centre.

    Couple of the birds seen near the diversion dam towards sunset.

    A small shorebird with a brown back and wings, a spotted white chest, and a white eye line over a black eye from an orange-yellow beak, stands on the edge of the rippled river with algae covered stalks growing out of the rocky river bed. The setting sun shines brightly on the bird.
    The golden sunlight bathes a male American Kestrel as it perches at the end of a tall wooden pole. The bronze back and silver wings shine in the light, as the grey head, with white cheeks and two black lines, reveals a black eye looking back over its shoulder over a hooked yellow beak towards something in the distance.
    A dark brown female wood duck swims along the edge of a reed lined canal. The bright oval eye spot white around the black eye, with a dark blue patch on the wing. She is trying to distract the weird human from her babies that have tucked themselves in the reeds further down the bank.

    A few Roseate Spoonbills spent part of the summer of 2018 at some wetlands in Raleigh, NC. Lots of birders were able to see this "usually-in-Florida" species. Attached are a few photos from when we went to see them.

They are brown-bodied with black necks and faces. The faces have white patches. Between the spoonbill and the geese is a single duck with its head under the water.

The bird's legs are fairly stout for a wading bird, and sharply bent at the knee. The water seems gray. Two ducks are in the bottom right of the image, with their heads below the water.

    We have a bunch of quails who come and stay for the night in our backyard. Every evening, there's some bird seeds magically rain on them. Yesterday I saw lots of lots of these tiny baby quails. They are effin' cute y'all. About 30 of those minis.

    I think this is a female Redhead leading her little group of ducklings across the reservoir, and one managed to convince her that its little flippers were just so tired and they couldn't possibly swim any further and could she just carry them a little ways?
