Mike Leavitt was HHS secretary back in the mid-aughts, the 2nd time the world was really worried a pandemic might be imminent. In an interview with @STAT, Leavitt makes a compelling argument for pandemic preparedness. https://www.statnews.com/2024/06/27/mike-leavitt-interview-bird-flu-h5n1/

When leaders talk about banning masks for safety, they ignore the safety of many diverse communities. People who are higher risk, and Asian people have been attacked for wearing masks. Black and Brown communities are disproportionately targeted by police. Safety means EVERYONE.

Funny how these . / / Libertarian / Rightwing arseholes who bang on about freedom of choice are very badly to take it away from other people.

And the rightwing - pseudo - pseudo - psuedo - pseudo £patriotism arseholes who really don't give a fuck about their fellow citizens or anyone else, they just want to enforce their own dumb orejudices onto everyone else, because that's what fascists do.

Former director of the CDC predicts the next will be from bird flu - And I predict that even though we know this, we won’t be properly prepared nor will many accept and adopt preventative measures. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/bird-flu-cdc-covid-pandemic-b2563711.html

Uh oh...

WHO confirms first fatal human case of bird flu A(H5N2)

"This was the first laboratory-confirmed human case of infection with A(H5N2) subtype of bird flu reported globally and the first H5 virus infection in a person reported in Mexico."

"The victim had no history of exposure to poultry or other animals, WHO said."

How did they get infected then...?

The way the mainstream media covers Bird Flu is wild. It's like a watchman who sees a giant ogre coming and says, "There's on ogre out there. But don't worry, he's walking the other way. Oop! He's walking this way, but he's probly headed somewhere else. Oh, ok, he's headed this way, but he probably won't eat anybody when he gets here. Ok, he's here, but so far he's only looking at folks hungrily. He's probably just window shopping. Ok, so now..."

With spreading amongst dairy cows, one of the most important things to think about right now is what would need to happen for this virus to actually start a pandemic.
I'm on a train, so a brief thread...

The is trying to persuade dairy farms to use PPE to protect workers from . But between fear of the stigma and the fact PPE isn't well suited to hot, wet environments, the offers of free equipment aren't finding many takers, @statnews's Sarah Owermohle reports. https://www.statnews.com/2024/05/10/bird-flu-virus-dairy-farmers-resist-ppe-recommendation/

⚠️ 🚫 Proof that our milk supply is not safe!!

Scientists warn Canada 'way behind the virus' as bird flu explodes among U.S. dairy cattle

"Without a "robust national surveillance program, there's no way to know if there are infections here or not."

"(The agency ....saying it is "not currently testing raw or pasteurized milk," adding that the virus isn't a food safety concern.) "

It's starting to look like pasteurization inactivates viruses in milk. But people who drink raw milk are playing with fire right now. https://www.statnews.com/2024/04/29/bird-flu-raw-milk-h5n1-risk-us-cattle/

"If you really want to stay safe, just wear an N95 mask (or better) in public. Get over your fear of masks. Most of you already know this part, but most of your friends and family have willed themselves into complete ignorance here. That's gonna have to change.

We don't have to repeat all the same stupid mistakes we made in 2020. Back then, many of us didn't understand anything about viruses, germs, clean air, or immune systems. We're not experts, but we sure as hell know enough to protect ourselves. The smartest among us are doing it.

We know that HEPA filters and Corsi-Rosenthal boxes work wonders. We also know how to change up our habits when necessary."

Where is that viral stuff, next to the beer?
Oh he says, the bird flu's in the milk, next to the Brie

Bird flu in the chicken
Bird flu in the eggs
Bird flu in my dairy milk
Thus the question begs

How soon until it jumps to humans
And makes us more than cry?
And when we get that bird flu bug
Will we finally be able to fly?

infects cattle. So, let's keep feeding them bird shit. That should help, right?🙄

"In contrast to Britain and Europe, American farmers are still allowed to feed cattle & other farm animals ground-up waste from other animals including birds.
Experts are unsure but fear it could be the poultry litter feed used in the US that has passed the virus to cattle.

In the US, the feeding of poultry litter to beef cows is a known factor in the cause of botulism in cattle, and is a risk in the case of H5N1."
