Question about alt text protocol. When I stumble across an image post in my feed from another account or another instance that I’d love to re-post, but it doesn’t have alt text, what’s the best way for me to add that extra value to the image before sharing, by adding my own alt text? cc: @Curator#images#advice
@eawilsonca You can ask the person nicely if they'd edit the post to include alt text so that you can boost it, or what I sometimes also do, is just reply to the post with the alt text and saying something like 'providing alt text before I boost' - it's quite common for folks to check the replies to a post if there's no alt text with the original post :)
@nora If anyone takes issue with you announcing your new pronouns, remember to laugh demonically and declare "You fools! This isn't even my final form!"
I'm considering giving Pixelfed a try, and I'd be grateful for some advice.
My use case is a more dedicated place to share mostly garden stuff, and to be able to link to those images from this account. I think? If I like it, will it make more sense to migrate this account, or should I keep them distinct? I have more questions, I just can't articulate them. 😀
I’m working with an organization of professional women who want our trans sisters to know they will be welcome and accepted in the group.
What’s the best way to do this in our media when having events, etc?
Because my brain goes “trans women are women, of course they’re welcome!” but I know that isn’t always the case and want to allay any concerns folks might have about joining.
Are there ways you’ve found to indicate while not othering? #advice#askfedi
It's surprisingly common for women's groups to signal that they're trans-inclusive, and they very much want to believe that they are... even though they're really very much not. Trans women will come, see that cisness is centered, and quietly leave.
To paraphrase Audre Lourde, if you make a space genuinely inclusive, where members of a given minority want to be, they will appear. If you look around at your group, and especially at your leadership--
@aronow --costs the ally in funding, membership, and so forth, and for that active, continuous, and serious work to demonstrate that your group is a safe place.
And I'm gonna be honest: as a business group, you've got an uphill battle, because trans women especially have gotten the short end of the stick from capitalism in a whole array of ways.
We’re heading up north to see the eclipse next week. #fabric folk in #canada, specifically #montreal#quebec, any fun places for fabric, ribbon, yarn, webbing etc that I should look up? Especially any place that sells locally made materials? #sewing#advice#recommendations
I'm trying to give suggestions that may help, and in that particular situation waiting works most of the time (at least in my experience, and the experience of most people who have asked me about this topic).
"in my experience if it doesn't from the get-go it never updates."
Have you tried refreshing the page? Or using an app?
If nothing works, might be worth asking your server admin if there's something specific to your server causing this not to work for you?
p.s. Also, bear in mind, even if it doesn't work for you it may be working for other people viewing your post. Servers render the previews independently, so a previewless post on one server may have a preview when viewed from another server.
